Hey all,
South Africa is ready to participate! We found a team here that will help, an organisation that will help us (Wikiafrica: Isla), the governmental agencies are willing to help us, the biggest news agency is waiting for our press releases, ....
We do have some troubles:
1. an old and difficult monument database, lots of errors, only partially tagged with GPS or even the address. Difficult identifier (something like 302-392-239392-32, impossible to use) 2. no processing of the lists yet 3. mobile upload. South Africans live with their cellphone, would open up opportunities having a "WLM-app" 4. the current monuments are targetted on the "Afrikaans" culture. We want to open the monument to the "previouly disadvantaged people", so we will allow for uploads of things that have not been declared as a monument yet. The uploader will have the opportunity to add some reasons why we should consider this important. This information will be shared with government 5. ...
But we're working on it!
Grtz,
Maarten

This is wonderful news!

partially tagged with GPS or even the address. Difficult identifier (something like 302-392-239392-32, impossible to use)
You have the chance to improve that with the contest ;-) – don't worry. Some ideas:
* prefilling fields with Upload Wizard is already possible. Which means, you can configure your lists in a way that people click on a button to upload images for a certain monument. They don't need to fill in the monument ID manually (if they use UpWiz).
* I think "no GPS" is almost standard, unfortunately, in some countries. However, how do you identify a monument without address (or let's say, location description?) – sounds like a real scavenger hunt.
- no processing of the lists yet
* In which format do they exist, and how many monuments are there? * How can we support you?
- mobile upload. South Africans live with their cellphone, would open
up opportunities having a "WLM-app"
We have a two-way-approach to this: WLM is quite on a good way to develop a native app (Android first), that allows upload directly and especially for WLM. I'll give a general update on this in the next days on th ML. A private sponsor/partner is planning to develop something similar especially for WLM on the base of an existing POI app with address-GPS-coding – this might lack language localization first (German), but will include all data from the monuments database and might open a different, a bit more touristic target group as participants for us.
So I'm quite optimistic with that!

I'm sure you find a good approach for that, I like the idea.
But we're working on it!
Thank you!

Ask the locals. It's by far the best solution, even when you have a description, but it makes reference to unofficial toponyms.

There's also a third Android App being developed by a Spanish student. They wanted extra functionalities, so he might get convinced to add a WLM module.
