Hi all, I forget if this has already been determined, but is there an easy way to see how many photos from WLM 2012 have already been incorporated in Wikipedia articles (total and by country)? Also, how many monuments that didn't have photos before have photos now (total and by country)? Is there any non-trivial way to track new articles based on WLM 2012 photo uploads?
Any other thoughts on how to demonstrate the impact of WLM on Wikipedia outside of the raw numbers?
thanks, Matthew
Hi Matthew, you can play a bit with this wonderful tool: http://toolserver.org/~magnus/ts2/glamorous/
It is much easier to select a single Category (es. Images from Wiki Loves Monuments in USA) than the whole huge cateogry (afaiu, you shoud try at different depths). I'm trying but it semmes that the toolserver is struggling, too many files (360000 and counting).

Hi Matthew,
Use http://toolserver.org/~magnus/glamorous.php (and choice "show details"). 48998 (13.39% of all images of category) are used.

Hi Matthew,
how many photos from WLM 2012 have already been incorporated in Wikipedia
articles (total and by country)?
Same number than Arild using he tool pointed by Andrea: (In main namespace only: Distinct files used = 48,998 (13.3% of all files), Pages using files = 15,377 ; Total file usage = 59,917)
Also, how many monuments that didn't have photos before have photos now
(total and by country)?
See < https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Statistics%3E
and make the diff with the revision before September 1st (though obivously monuments lists will have been improved during that time)
I am not sure how André did this but it is a great overview on the statistics for Sweden (although only in Swedish).

Also is it possible to create lists of wikipedia articles without images that are about monuments that now have images on Commons?
In a few weeks I'm running another workshop for donors who are willing to give some time to Wikipedia, and the more straightforward I can make image adding the more successful the event will be, I've already got a list of articles in the UK that we probably have images for, but a list of monuments that we definitely have images for would be better.

This I guess can be done pretty easily since all participating countries (except for Russia) have lists of monuments, and the progress of adding them to the list is monitored on Commons,
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Statistics
We can safely assume that in 99% of the cases if the picture is on the list and a separate dedicated article exists then the picture is also in the article. The remaining 1% are the articles which for whatever reason are not linked from the lists.
How many articles we have can be determined by the number of links from the lists, but this probably can not be done without a bot.
Cheers Yaroslav
The links from the list are not always the right links. For many houses in the netherlands some difficult words in their description are linked (e.g. house with [[stepped gable]]) Mvg, Bas

Mvg,

This is right, and also I realized that many other information is linked (for instance, in the US lists the towns are linked from the county lists). This means that we probably do not know how many articles we have.
I have some ideas about this, but will not post them before the final jury decision, because they need to be discussed, and now it is not really a good time for this.
The part of my post about the number of pictures is (I believe) correct.
Cheers Yaroslav
In my experience it is more complex, sometimes people will only add a picture to the article in their native language or languages. It would be nice if as a spin off of this project we could have lists of Articles without images but for which we now have images, ideally one list per language version of Wikipedia.

Hi Platonides, assuming that the link being red or blue tells you whether an article exists, then that would be a good way to spot monuments that don't have articles - though as the monument links aren't clickable you also need a database to find out what monument links to the ID. But even if the monument ids were clickable, you still need a way to identify the articles which don't have images. Rich Farmbrough did this for EN wiki articles that have a UK Geocode but no images - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rich_Farmbrough/temp_110 If we could do this for articles about monuments where the article doesn't have an image, but an image is available via WLM then it would be a great way to make sure that we maximise use of these images.

It tells you whether that identifier exists in the lists or not (according to the tool knowledge, there may be some quirks).

I know, last year tool did have them clickable, but with so many countries I didn't make an app to show them this year. Maybe I should have linked it to the erfgoed api, but the output would have been quite raw.
But even if the monument ids were clickable, you still need a way to identify the articles which don't have images.
Right.
It wasn't intended as a complete solution, only as a way to provide "a list of monuments that we definitely have images for".
As mentioned, the bigger problem is getting the article associated with each monument (if it exists).

Well, wouldn't it be helpful to reuse the monuments android app for this? It is set up for automatic updates, so you could have it change when WLM is no longer active to show you all monument articles in your area, not just monument images. Though it's fairly hard to text edit with a smart phone, it would help to show anomalies when you're out in the field, and some article <-> image links might be fixed with a simple photo-insert. Jane

Is it properly loaded for US ?
Seems so... there's an article column. We could make something from that.
