Hey folks,
it may be possible to publish a 2 page article in Europa Nostra, but the deadline would be short. Is there anything you'd like to share in such an article? I imagine a few scenarios:
- 1. Make a piece about WLM in the past years - 2. Make a piece about WLM in 2015, with a short outlook for 2016. I'm not sure if this would give the best material - 3. Make a piece showcasing 3-5 national competitions in the wider European region (Council of Europe - which includes Russia etc) and making it a little more about the national stories.
I personally am a bit in favour of the third, which could let us tell a story about national competitions, how volunteers play a role etc. But I would need your help! Who would be able to help write a piece? What would be your favourite approach?
Best, Lodewijk

To me indeed the third one looks like the better option, may be with adding some of the global overview - such that the Netherlands already covered most of the Rijksmonuments and started with the local monuments, and for instance Mexico still has some room to go (just examples, do not mean any disrespect, and they could be changed).
Cheers Yaroslav

I think we should find some space to tell about the challenges that WLM faces, like the prohibition of panorama in Italy (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Italian_cultural_heritage_on_the_Wikimedia_p... ): would you place this in (1) or (3)? I can certainly write such a piece if you tell me how long and what sort of audience the publication has (technical or not etc.).

Hello,
I think that the fact that after Wiki Loves Monuments we are having Wiki Loves Everything everywhere is worth mentioning. In the meanwhil we are loving everything. So, WLM was just the beginning.

I can write something about WLM in Russia, but I have to know the size limit and the time scale.

Hi,
OK, it seems the most interesting would be scenario 3. I have a good idea what the story in Italy might look like :) Alexander, what would be the story about Russia?
I think a story about Austria might be nice too? Given that it is one of the most successful countries in terms of coverage?

My ideas about WLM in Russia would be:
- no national register of cultural heritage (we are basically making one ourselves, and it's at least as good as different 'official' registers created over the years) - no freedom of panorama for sculptures (see Italy) - amazing traveling activity of our participants (last year we offered a special nomination for the maximum number of regions covered; the winner uploaded photos from 31 regions (out of ~85 regions in total), which is quite a lot considering the size of the country)
There is likely not enough space to mention everything, but you can point me to the topic that will be most interesting for the European readers.

Hi,
the target audience would be heritage (monuments) professionals and volunteers. So what we would probably want to transfer, is enthusiasm for free knowledge, for collaborating with online movements, for sharing information. So it would be especially nice to share a story, I think. Not so much describing the whole competition, but taking out one aspect, and telling a narrative. In Italy, I suspect the story about how all the government institutions came together to work around silly legislation would be a great story. The size of Russia and the travelling involved might make a nice story too. I'm a little less convinced that the 'making our own lists' would come across well, but I don't know enough about that.
Yaroslav's suggestion for taking 'we have covered everything' might work too, in several countries. In the Netherlands, I could imagine a story about collecting the municipal lists (this involved calling them all, and collecting and converting them one by one).
What other stories do you know about, that we could share?
Best, Lodewijk

Hi Lodewijk, We in Ukraine would be interested to participate, especially because we have just released a journal about Wiki Loves Monuments for exactly the same audience - monuments professionals and volunteers - and thus we already have some materials ready (in Ukrainian). Probably the most interesting story from us would be about "making our own lists" - not in the meaning that we are doing original research, but in the meaning that Ukraine has strictly no cultural heritage register. Instead several hundreds of institutions maintain their own official lists, from the Ministry of Culture to municipalities, and they hardly communicate with each other. The process involved sending requests to all of them, digitising and converting these lists, collaborating with local historians and museums who sometimes had the necessary lists and even requesting the lists in the court when a local administration refused to provide them. As a result, we have the most complete monument lists that ever existed in Ukraine. If this story does not work, we can also write about the "WLM community" we have, i.e. people who travel, visit, picture and document monuments during the year and upload photos of 1000+ monuments in September. If this corresponds to what you are looking for, please tell us what do we have to provide. Hi,
OK. In total we have 350-400 words. So I propose: - 100 words for 3 stories each - 100 words for a general surrounding explanation.
I propose the following stories: - RU about travelling long distances by photographers - NL about collecting municipal lists - IT about the struggle with legislation & permissions
Each story can be 100 words in English, with a few good photos that go with it (not sure how many we can fit in).
Would that work? Please confirm.
Unfortunately we can't put more stories in! But NickK, it would be great to include something on the WLM (or Wikimedia) blog! Could I keep the UA story as a backup for this? It sounds more complicated to explain in 100 words than the NL story, and I like the geographic diversity

Hi, We actually already published a post on Wikimedia blog about this last year: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/06/19/ukraine-secret-cultural-heritage/ , we also wrote about this in our WLM photo album ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AWlm_2014_Ukraine.pdf&... ) and elsewhere. It is unfortunate that the number of stories dropped from 5 to 3, but we are still available to provide a 100-word story if needed. Thanks, Mykola (NickK)

Hi, OK. In total we have 350-400 words. So I propose: - 100 words for 3 stories each - 100 words for a general surrounding explanation. I propose the following stories: - RU about travelling long distances by photographers - NL about collecting municipal lists - IT about the struggle with legislation & permissions Each story can be 100 words in English, with a few good photos that go with it (not sure how many we can fit in). Would that work? Please confirm. Unfortunately we can't put more stories in! But NickK, it would be great to include something on the WLM (or Wikimedia) blog! Could I keep the UA story as a backup for this? It sounds more complicated to explain in 100 words than the NL story, and I like the geographic diversity Best, Lodewijk On Tue, Apr 5, 2016 at 11:25 PM, Mykola Kozlenko < mycola-k@ukr.net > wrote: Hi Lodewijk, We in Ukraine would be interested to participate, especially because we have just released a journal about Wiki Loves Monuments for exactly the same audience - monuments professionals and volunteers - and thus we already have some materials ready (in Ukrainian). Hi, the target audience would be heritage (monuments) professionals and volunteers. Best, Lodewijk On Sun, Apr 3, 2016 at 7:27 PM, Alexander Tsirlin < altsirlin@gmail.com > wrote: My ideas about WLM in Russia would be:

There is likely not enough space to mention everything, but you can point me to the topic that will be most interesting for the European readers.

Hi all,
below a first draft - the piece about Italy is still missing. I think we have a nice diversity this way! It's cramming a bit more, so lets see how this works out.
Best, Lodewijk
----
Wiki Loves Monuments was organised for the sixth time in 2015, and has now collected well over a million photos of monuments across the world. There are major differences in the national approaches towards cultural heritage, and volunteers organising the competition face different challenges across the world. Sometimes is getting the lists of monuments the main challenge, other times it is a legal, cultural or geographical challenge. We hope to continue spreading enthusiasm for free knowledge and cultural heritage across the world, and make information about cultural heritage available across the world.
*Russia* – Russia faces major challenges in its internal diversity and vast geographic distances. Last year, Russian organizers boosted geographical coverage by launching a separate prize for the maximum number of visited regions. Two participants traveled each thousands of kilometers through the whole country to cover 30 of Russia’s 81 regions, from the Amber Coast to the Pacific Coast and from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea. One of the winners, Evgeny Lazarev, told us that his 1298 photos were an outcome of his frequent traveling by car over the last 6 years.
Italy - ...
*Netherlands* – The country where Wiki Loves Monuments started in 2010 has over 60.000 recognised national monuments. After four photo competitions and the wonderful donation of hundreds of thousands of photos by the cultural heritage agency, many monuments have a free photo available. What to photograph next?
The next challenge was in municipal monuments, with one slight problem: each municipality is responsible for determining and maintaining their list. While some municipality publish proudly lists of their local heritage, others have have not recognised local heritage, or are even reluctant to share the lists. After many phone calls and emails, volunteers managed to gather a unique database of Dutch municipal monuments with more than 80% of the municipalities covered.

Hi Lodewijk,
hope it is not too late. The text looks good, but I think in the first line explanation is missing on what WLM actually is - smth like crowdsourcing photographic competition which aims at collecting all architectural monuments all over the world - unless of course there is a lede in the article which has already explained this.
Cheers Yaroslav
Thanks. Feedback is welcome until tonight.
Unfortunately I will rather have to cut information short, than to add more, so I'll have to look into that. I'm afraid Jonathans suggestion about Armenia wouldn't fit in - but it would also be a great opportunity for a blog post.

*Italy* - No other country had more photographers participating to the 2015 contest and the contributed photos are accessed millions of times each month on Wikimedia sites alone. But this did not come easily – besides a lot of effort by volunteers, staff and 320 official partners, some legal challenges had to be overcome. Participants could only take photos of Pompei and some other 3000 items, a fraction of Italy's cultural heritage.
The main obstacle to the promotion of Italian culture is "Codice Urbani", a law which forces photographers to enquire the local authority about protected status for each building, ask authorisation and pay fees if required. For objects created in the last 150 years, an additional obstacle is copyright for the architect, given the lack of freedom of panorama. To help photographers, Wikimedia Italia acquired this permission in advance for 392 custodian entities.
