Dear all, we have some photos uploaded with this application.
The quality is really bad and the user is not registered.
Take one example:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Villa_Rieter_%28Sch%C3%B6nberg%29-171...
As I had no possibility to test it, I would know if the quality is connected with the application or if the user has the possibility to setup it.
In addition, do you know how find the user?
Regards
That image has "|Author=Alex Schröder" who may or may not be known..
Regards, Ole

Charles: is that because all these photos are taken with a mobile device (with on-board camera) or because the quality has been lowered?
Vincenç: it is sub-optimal for sure. The question is, is it so bad that we should disqualify the pictures? For next year this is perhaps indeed something to keep in mind. But this kind of privacy conflicts is something we will run into always if we use external platforms.

I guess the pictures have been resized by the app, I check around 15 files and they are all exactly 1 024 × 765 pixels size, it's unlikely that all the mobile phone used have all the same resolution camera .

This is a bit weird indeed and we did not realize that before. In terms of *image quality* however, which is not measured in pixels, I'm positively surprized by a lot of the images.
The contact issue is solved as mentioned: if needed, we can contact the winners via our partner.
We will have a post mortem meeting with this partner in some weeks and I will present the different concerns raised in the last weeks. Before that I will check what's going on with this downsizing thing and if it can be "healed" by re-uploading (which would rise the question if this would be a contest version however... ;-))

Note that WWW123POICOM has 41 deleted files. I haven't dug into all of them, but a random sampling suggests that in all those cases it was a partial upload. It would be nice to reupload them if it was a problem between 123POI server and Wikimedia Commons (not much to do if it was the fault of the app when sending to 123POI servers, sadly)

As stated in the email quoted above, 41 files. Given that there are 233 remaining uploads, this is a corruption of 15% of their photos.
In some cases those users have more photos, and it's likely the more prolific uploaders are the most affected by this, so those are certainly worth contacting. Although ideally 123POI would contact with all of them (as well as fixing their app!).

Unfortunately the national contest says that the photos must be in high resolution and the user should be identified by an email.
So I suppose that the photos coming from this project should be considered out of the limits of the contest.
Hi Ilario,
I'm not entirely sure what you're meaning. The whole point of the e-mail requirement (we never said they had to be identified *by an email*) was that we are able to contact them. Turning their email functionality on at Wikimedia Commons and/or Flickr would be sufficient. Since 123POI is basically a similar platform as Flickr, it would be just as fine to confirm your email address there. The reason of this rule wasn't to exclude people, but to put the burden of providing contact information on the participant - so that if they have turned email off - we can simply ignore them if we want.

Absolutely, anyway the regulation of Wikimedia Ch says:
"Afin d’être contacté, le participant aura renseigné son adresse de courriel dans ses préférences sur le site Wikimedia Commons"
It means that, if there was an email in Commons, the user would be accepted. The regulation has been published some days after the start of the contest so we may be "flexible", so it means that there should be at least a link to the user in another portal and we can spent some time to contact him, but *at least* the email in Commons or everywhere is a *must* to don't be excluded.
It's important, in my opinion to do it respectful of some other participants who followed the regulation.
Hi Ilario,
if you are so hard on such a rule, I think it would have been fair to tell from the beginning of the contest that you will not allow alternative platforms (because that is basically what you're saying). The interpretation I would give to this rule, is that /on the platform you uploaded/ you need to have your email address confirmed. That scales well, and works in the current situation too.
I know you don't like the 123POI upload platform very much, but at the very least we shouldn't let the users who used it suffer from that.

I'm not entirely sure what you're meaning. The whole point of the e-mail requirement (we never said they had to be identified *by an email*) was

I understand and I agree to be open.
What should be important is to give to all persons the same possibility but also to don't give a privilege connected with a different source (Flickr or 123POI or so on).
So, we may be open to include them but we have to evaluate the quality of the photos uploaded in the Commons without any exception connected with the limits of the device.
Unfortunately the regulation has been written not considering the opportunity of 123POI, I agree.
The regulation of next WLM may take care of this opportunity.

One problem is that the 123POI app was advertised as a way to upload to Wikimedia Commons, not as "an alternative platform to participate in WLM". So the user in good faith would be thinking to be participating in Wikimedia Commons. The app didn't allow linking to the commons user even when existing :(

Hi Vincenç,
do you mean in case they won a prize? Probably, if we ask 123POICOM to email them with a message, they will. You need an email address to create an account there.

I mentioned this "issue" to Elke a few days ago.
She answered that:
123POI has the registration data, so I'm sure that this wouldn't be a problem.
The quality for all the file upload by this means seams low http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Uploaded_with_123poi_app ___________________________________________________________ Charles ANDRES, Chairman "Wikimedia CH" – Association for the advancement of free knowledge – www.wikimedia.ch Skype: charles.andres.wmch IRC://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-ch

The users are unknown to Commons like every Flickr user too.
The quality depends on the mobile device of the user.
