fyi, I created a new WLM chat channel on the new Mattermost install: https://chat.wmcloud.org/wikimedia/channels/wikilovesmonuments The main advantage over iRC is that you can also see messages from before you join, allowing you to log in every now and then, rather than be constantly online.
People can of course keep using the Freenode channel if they so desire.

Thanks for doing this. I personally use IRC and am fine with it, however, I've seen people, even technically savvy people having to spend half an hour or more figuring out how to connect to it, or how to work with it once they're on it. The technical bar for entry is really high, in my opinion, and I appreciate other open source solutions that can help us reduce it.

Lily is right, maybe it just needs a channel with a low barrier of entry for the most important news?
