Hi all,
just a short email about communications. We get a lot of questions,
usually after people were thinking about it for a while. Please, send
your questions whenever you have them - there are no dumm questions!
Also, please send your questions to this mailing list. If you have a
question, it is likely that others will have the same - and could
benifit from the answers. Also, the Dutch don't have an answer to
everything, but maybe someone else on this list knows
Updates every month or so or whenever you did something big are also
appreciated on this mailing list. Keep it short to save time.
If you have quick questions or just want to think/brainstorm/chat
about Wiki Loves Monuments, you can do so in #wikilovesmonuments on
Freenode IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net/wikilovesmonuments ). You can
access this through your favorite IRC client or
http://webchat.freenode.net .
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi everyone,
You probably heard about the crazy Italian laws making it impossible to
do Wiki Loves Monuments in Italy. In our chapter we happen to have some
copyright experts. I got these:
* http://www.ivir.nl/publications/guibault/Infosoc_report_2007.pdf :
STUDY ON THE IMPLEMENTATION AND EFFECT IN MEMBER STATES’ LAWS OF
DIRECTIVE 2001/29/EC ON THE HARMONISATION OF CERTAIN ASPECTS OF
COPYRIGHT AND RELATED RIGHTS IN THE INFORMATION SOCIETY
* http://www.ivir.nl/publications/guibault/InfoSoc_Study_2007.pdf : The
Implementation of Directive 2001/29/EC in the Member States
* http://www.ivir.nl/publications/guibault/JIPITEC_2010_2.pdf : Why
Cherry-Picking Never Leads to Harmonisation. The Case of the Limitations
on Copyright under Directive 2001/29/EC
Die hard copyright stuff you don't want to read, but might be useful for
reference.

Maarten,
What tools are there already in-place for WLM? I'd like to have a look
at the data model... there's no point in developing our own tools, if we
can extend existing ones.

Hi,
I'm from the Catalan project, and recently we have been developing lists of
monuments (partially by bot, partially by hand). Some of them include
coordinates, which would allow us to create maps of monuments They would
useful for photographers. But I wonder how to create them. I've got
different approaches in my mind, for example:
1. Creating a list of monuments with coordinates for Google Maps, even
though I don't know if it's possible. Maybe it could also work with Google
Earth.
2. The other way is creating maps with OpenStreetMap and, with a program,
add the different locations. You can see an example at
http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Joancreus/Location_maps. Unfortunately,
this would require thousands of maps to achieve a decent quality, and,
depending on the number, many labels couldn't be read.
Help would be appreciated from people who worked with the project last year,
in the Netherlands, or have other ideas.
Thanks a lot,
Joan.
Hi,
I am sorry, but something has been miscommunicated I am afraid. By accident,
I found out about
http://www.viquimedia.cat/viqui/L'Alguer_a_la_Viquipèdia/it . It says a few
things I am not really happy about. First of all, it uses "Wiki loves
Monuments" for a quite general competition, starting next week. It is of
course up to the local organizers to organize contests, but please if you
want to make it a Wiki Loves Monuments, then stick to roughly the same time
frame and rule sets. If you persist in a different timeframe, it is a
different contest, and I would appreciate it if you would avoid confusion
with Wiki Loves Monuments.
Second, there were concerns expressed about the legal status of such contest
in Italy, which was the reason for Wikimedia Italia (unfortunately) to not
participate because they considered it legally impossible because of Italian
copyright. As far as I am aware, Alguer lies in Italy, and falls under
Italian law. Therefore, I am doubtful about this - I don't say it is
impossible, but it definitely needs more time.
Thirdly, it uses *email* as submission method. This is problematic in
several ways. It does not provide an easy workflow, does not familiarize
people with Wikimedia's uploading system, and put wikipedia down as having
an editorial council, which accepts content by email. I would find it very
unwise to offer this as main upload tool. Tools will be developed in all
participating languages in due time, but you will have to stick to the same
timeframe for that.
Finally, I see big issues with requesting such private data of contestants -
you are asking for social security numbers etc - I am not sure this is
covered properly by the WMF privacy policy, but personally I would find this
totally unacceptable both as a contestant and as an organizer.
Of course I might have misinterpreted the page, my Italian is existing of a
few words, and I need to use translation devices to properly understand the
page, but there seem to be some big issues. Is there anyone here who is
responsible for this contest and who can perhaps explain and help solve the
misunderstandings?
Thanks!
Lodewijk
Hi,
Hay has made a placeholder website for wikilovesmonuments.eu - this will not
be the final design, and input and help is probably very welcome. Please get
in touch with Hay, in a seperate thread on this mailing list.
There are other improvements to be made, I suggest to keep textual
improvements etc for the meeting in May.
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi all,
The proposal for Wiki Loves Monuments Europe is around for a while now, and
we're getting somewhere! On [1] you can find that there are currently 10 (!)
countries interested in participating. This report is to help you get an
idea of what is going on, where we are and where we are going. Any
additional information about your countries situation would be extremely
helpful.
The following countries have indicated that they want to participate in this
project:
Estonia - Finland - France - Germany - Netherlands - Poland - Portugal -
Spain - Sweden - Switzerland
Additionally, there are a few countries interested and people are working on
letting them participate, including:
Andorra - Austria - Belgium - Denmark - Liechtenstein - Luxembourg - Ukraine
- United Kingdom
Currently most chapters are working on laying contacts and getting a
structure off the ground. I have already participated a brainstorm session
in Cologne, and will give a lecture/workshop on WLM in Wroclaw, Poland and
Maarten will give a workshop in Berlin, both later this month. Do you need
some help in getting your thoughts together? Would you like us to
participate in a brainstorm session/workshop? Please let us know very soon,
and we can probably organize something.
In May we intend to organize a meeting in Berlin for representatives from
all organizations participating in this European contest. We are still
looking for funding to be able to fly in people that cannot afford it
themselves (please poke me if your chapter can help with that), and
Wikimedia Deutschland has generously offered to host us in Berlin.
They will organize there a developers meeting, and that would be an
excellent synergy for us since we could perhaps persuade some people there
to write tools useful for WLM! I would like some input from you on this
meeting, but more information about that in a seperate email.
Short summaries as I am aware (happy to be corrected and see additional
information) about the participating countries:
* Estonia - Decided recently to participate. Need some thinking about the
Freedom of Panorama, but 5 volunteers are enthusiast. Status of lists and
contacts unknown.
* Finland - Have the data available for the 2000-3000 monuments, no lists
yet?
* France - started off as one of the first countries with some 43000
monuments. There is a structure for the lists, all lists are not there yet.
Chapter is supportive (?)
* Germany - Problematic with their 700.000 monuments and no central
authority registering them. Volunteers are working to get the data bit by
bit, and might take quite some effort. Project set up, seems to be moving.
Chapter is organizing workshops to get volunteers involved.
* Netherlands - structure and lists is already there from last year. Many
monuments have already photos, work for NL starts later this year.
* Poland - Chapter is enthusiast, need to get more volunteers. Some 60000
monuments, and there is some list structure. Unclear how much work to be
done.
* Portugal - the 4000-5000 monuments are already structured in lists on the
wiki.
* Spain - volunteers from both Wikimedia España and Associació Amical
Viquipèdia are involved in organizing the list structures in several
language Wikipedia's about Spain and Andorra. (13000 monuments)
* Sweden - situation unclear.
* Switzerland - 8300 monuments, available in structured lists.
I realize this probably contains errors, so please correct me!
Unfortunately Italy will not participate because of issues with Italian
copyright law regarding cultural heritage :(
Looking forward to keep working on this and your replies (short reports on
how things are going in your country and what problems you face would be
welcome!)

We
have encountered an unexpected problem with monuments of Minorca (http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llista_de_monuments_de_Menorca). There are about 1,000 monuments,
most of them of Talayotic culture (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talaiotic_Cultura), possibly with an unclear
demarcation between the categories of monument and archaeological area, two of
the categories defined for Bien de Interés Cultural (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bien_de_Inter% C3% A9s_Cultural). We have contacted with the person
in charge of heritage in the island council asking for help to identify them
and locate them as the online register only contains the name and little else. His answer is that we must limit
to 65 monuments that are accessible to the public. The reason is that most are on
private lands and they want to avoid spolation. He recognizes out of the record
that most are not monuments. I think they probably lack of protection and I
know the islanders are very sensitive that tourists do not invade private
lands.
As a Wikipedian I can not accept
it. The register of monuments is
public information, monuments are protected by law, we can not redefine if a
monument should be in the arqueological area category and we can not limit the
information based on problems or interests of the administration. But from WLM viewpoint, probably
it is not appropiate causing problems and perhaps it makes nonsense to suggest participants
to go to inaccessible places to take photos of ruins or caves or to suggest them
monuments that we can not correctly identify. Moroever, the amount of 65 would be within the Spanish average.
I am confused with this. Any suggestions?

Hi all,
we are planning (still to be confirmed) a Hackathon in Berlin in May and
are thinking about bringing the technically challenged and unchallenged
monument-lovers together. We could either have WLM as a parallel
slot/main topic during the dev meeting or meet a day before.
Besides the technical issues we will, of course, also discuss all other
important topics and use this as an official kick-off meeting. Therefore
it is important that people can all participate from multiple countries
If you are interested in joining the event, please provide some input
about your preferred dates here:

Thanks,
Nicole
