Hi everyone,
I already heard from several people that they are working on tools. I
would like to make this a shared effort so I created
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Tools to
document what we already have and what needs to be developed. Please add
your tools no matter how unfinished they are!
I already added one wanted tool, the "search and export tool". That tool
has been on my list of wanted tool for almost a year. Who wants to help
to get this tool going?

Hi,
We have some serious issues of running WLM in Finland. Museovirasto
(The National Board of Antiquities)[1] has some suitable data.
Unfortunately they didn't give us any special permissions to use that,
and don't seem to be interested to partner with us. We can only access
the data through Paikkatietoikkuna [2] which has very strict rules,
including that all data must be destroyed after one year after
downloading.
This means that unless something comes up we will not be able to
participate in WLM, because we cannot get the data we need in a format
we can share.
The only bright side seems to be that they are in process of opening
the data even more, so maybe in year or two we could use that.

Hi everyone,
I'm very happy to announce that De Bond Heemschut is going to support
the organisation of Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 in the Netherlands!
From their website: "De Bond Heemschut is a private organization which
has worked continuously for almost 100 years (since 1911) to preserve
the Dutch cultural heritage. 'Heemschut' derives from the words
'schutten' meaning to 'enclose' (i.e. protect) and 'heem', 'one's
premises'. As a heritage organization our work involves protecting
historically interesting structures and sites - everything from an
endangered tea house to carved up land, for example alongside the
motorways.
We carry out this work with the drive and dedication of volunteers. Each
of the Dutch provinces and the city of Amsterdam has its own independent
Heemschut committee." (from http://www.heemschut.nl/en.html, more
information over there)
They already supported Wiki Loves Monuments 2010 with some prices and
with someone in our jury. This year Heemschut is going to support us a
lot more with "offline" PR, something we didn't really get to last year.
I look forward working with them!
Maybe something for the other countries to look into: Does your country
have a volunteer based heritage organization like Heemschut? It would be
a natural partner to work with.

Hola.
Saludos.
I've send it to the mailing list of WLM because I think it could be interesting for somebody.

Hi! I'm writing from Spain. I'm a member of Wikimedia España and we participate in WLM, but we are working very slowly. So I think a mailing list could be very useful for us. Wikimedia España exists only since some weeks ago and we are currently working on our web site, our mailing work groups, organization, etc. We have a mailing list, of course, but only a general one. Apart from that a list hosted by WM-NL could be a good one to join people from WM-ES, Amical and people who aren't members of any assotiation.
I know that this list is used by two or three wikimedians who are members of Amical. This is also a invitation to them to work together also on a mailing list apart of the Wikipedia. List on Ca:wiki are very developed, but not the lists on other languages, like Spanish or Galician.
I've never managed a list but I could try it. As a consequence, we ask for a mailing list for Spain if you agree. We'll be very grateful. I've asked some people who are interested and are have been working on WLM in Spain, and they agree.
My e-mail adress is showed with this e-mail. The code is "es" of course. The list could be open and it'd be better to have an archive.
Thank you very much. I'm sorry for my English.
Regards.

Subject: [Wiki Loves Monuments] WMNL can facilitate a mailing list for your country
Dear all,
I know that the technical infrastructure of the chapters is not the same everywhere. We can set up a mailing list for you that allows you to communicate and organise in a centralised way without having to know all the e-mail addresses of everyone involved. Of course you are free to arrange your own Google Groups, Yahoo group, or whatever if this makes more sense to you.
The e-mail address we can offer for the list would be "wlm-XX(a)lists.wmnederland.nl", where XX would be the country code.
So if any of you are in need of a mailing list, please let us know in this thread, including the following properties for the list:e-mail address of the mailing list managerCountry codeShould be mailing list be open or closed – international coordinators of WLM will be subscribed for closed mailing lists (Lodewijk Gelauff and Maarten Dammers)Archived or not (for closed mailing lists the archive will only be visible for subscribers)Cheers!

It's not simply up to the mayor to authorize or not some kind of photographs.
Please refer to "Codice dei beni culturali e il paesaggio" (rough
translation: Cultural common goods and landscape code) available here:
http://www.beniculturali.it/mibac/multimedia/MiBAC/documents/1240240310779_…
(sorry, I can't find an english version).
Art. 10 lists what it is meant as "cultural common goods", art. 106
describes the personal use which doesn't include any right of
redistribution, ecc.
I strongly raccomend to you to hire an attorney to double check that
what you're organizing is feasible and, moreover, legal.

Hi all,
I am pleased to tell you that Wikimedia Deutschland has offered generously
to host an international meeting for participating chapters on Wiki Loves
Monuments. We will combine this meeting with the developer meeting in May in
Berlin ( see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Berlin_Hackathon_2011 ). We took
this meeting already into account in our planning on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Timeline
because
there are several topics that would really benefit from real life
discussions.
To be able to organize this well, we would like to get your input on some
topics. First of all, the day. The developer workshop will be Friday -
Sunday, and for this Wiki Loves Monuments meeting we can choose to organize
it on the Thursday before this developers meeting, or on the Friday, the
first day of the meeting parallel. The main advantage of Thursday is that
there is no overlap, so people can attend both, and that we can use the
outcomes of the WLM meeting as input for the developer meeting. The main
advantages of Friday are that people with a job need to take a day less off,
and are therefore maybe more likely to attend.
I would also like to know which topics *you* think are important to discuss
at such a meeting. Please bear in mind that there will also be the chapters
meeting in March and Wikimania to exchange some thoughts, so which topics
need to be /discussed/.
Finally, I would like you to think about who can attend this (first discuss
this within your group perhaps). Of course we cannot have a huge meeting,
the maximum number of participants will be 20-25. With already more than 10
chapters participating, and probably some extra people from the Netherlands
attending this meeting to share knowledge from last year, this would limit
attendance to 1-2 per chapter. Primarily I am asking who /wants/ to join,
and whether you would be able to afford these costs as a chapter yourself.
If you can't please indicate this - I am trying to find a solution. Also, if
your chapter is able to cover some extra travel costs for another chapter,
that would be mostly welcome. Please let me know via this list or
privately.
The dates are currently still debated - most likely it will be either the
weekend of 21/22 or the weekend of 14/15 May, with the preceeding
Friday/Thursday.
Looking forward to your input,
Lodewijk
I have some
doubts about the identifiers. How will we distinguish if monument number 50 is
from Nederland or Andorra? Perhaps should it be identified with a prefix (NL-50,
AD-50), or perhaps is there any solution in mind?
Moroever,
in Spain we can find different formats in different sources: "(R.I.) - 51
- 0010580 - 00000", "R-I-51-0010580", and others. Obviously we
need to unify to an unique format and we are discussing it with wm-es, but I
would appreciate some inputs. "R.I." or "R-I" stands for
Registro de Inmuebles (buildings' register) and "51" is the category
for monuments. Probably it is not a good idea to ask participants to type a
complicated number format with spaces, zeros, etc. One solution is to reduce it
to its numeric form "10580" or perhaps to construct a simplified
format like "RI510010580". What are the technical implications about
identifiers, and which would be the best approach?

Hi all,
just a short email about communications. We get a lot of questions,
usually after people were thinking about it for a while. Please, send
your questions whenever you have them - there are no dumm questions!
Also, please send your questions to this mailing list. If you have a
question, it is likely that others will have the same - and could
benifit from the answers. Also, the Dutch don't have an answer to
everything, but maybe someone else on this list knows
Updates every month or so or whenever you did something big are also
appreciated on this mailing list. Keep it short to save time.
If you have quick questions or just want to think/brainstorm/chat
about Wiki Loves Monuments, you can do so in #wikilovesmonuments on
Freenode IRC (irc://irc.freenode.net/wikilovesmonuments ). You can
access this through your favorite IRC client or
http://webchat.freenode.net .
Best,
Lodewijk
