seems to have many requests related to WLM. Most have probably been
archived by the bot without a reply, but it would be useful to answer
the remaining ones (or archive them if no longer relevant so that the
backlog is reduced).
Thanks,

Hi there,
it is with a great pleasure that I inform you that we have -- thanks
to Raymond -- finally managed to get the Wiki Loves Monuments survey
pushed onto the Translatewiki for you to be able to translate in an
easy way. Please have a look at
<https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special%3ATranslate&taction=transla…>
and pick up the language you would like to translate the survey
messages into.
For now, we would like to focus on the 27 main languages used in
countries participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2012. We still lack
translations of the messages into the following languages:
* Afrikaans;
* Belarusian -- both in the normative and in the Taraškievica
ortographies, though having at least one would be fine with me;
* Catalan;
* Czech;
* Danish;
* Estonian;
* French;
* Hebrew;
* Hindi;
* Italian;
* Malayalam;
* Dutch;
* Norwegian (Bokmål or Nynorsk) -- same as with Belarusian;
* Polish;
* Romanian;
* Russian;
* Slovak;
* Serbian (Latin script);
* Swedish;
* Swahili;
* Tamil;
* Telugu;
* Tagalog;
* Ukrainian.
There is no defined schedule for translating the survey messages, but
I would appreciate having them ready as soon as possible in order to
use the slowly fading attention of our users, as the later we publish
the survey, the less answers we are likely to get (I presume).
We are going to invite the users to take part in the survey and send
them a thank-you note as soon as the survey is ready with an automated
"notification system" (in other words, a bot with the flood flag).
In any case, thanks in advance for your time and your contributions,
and as always, please feel free to ask any questions that you might
find helpful in translating the survey.

hello,
lately we have been in touch with some printing house to find a sponsor for
the calendars. We did find one as You know, but we also find a printing
house ready to print in high quality and good price the 12 winners (a.o.)
on alu-dibond <http://img.seenby.de/120807/css/bond.jpg> in an exhibition
format like A1 (594 × 841 cm). And first research on shipping costs let us
come to the conclusion, that we could have an exhibition tour with the
winner - motive hosted by local partners.
As an example:
Wikimedia Austria does have the Bundes Denkmalamt as partner. Would they
like to host for two weeks in the coming year and than send it further to
the next exhibition site previewed? The exhibition would be ready for show
and delivered in two boxes including the labels to each image and the
shipping papers.
We do consider this idea a nice opportunity to show to a broader public our
achievements and to deepen the contact with local partners. It might even
help to prepare the ground for a coming Wiki loves Monuments edition 2013.
Time line:
Start of the Tour: not before December 2012
End of the Tour August 2013 (scheduled date for the Wikimania)
Taken in account that the exhibition should stay at least 10 - 14 days at
each station and shipping might take some time, we could have 6 to 8
stations all together. WLM international would be able to finance the
production of the photo plates, boxes and stand for the shipping costs (up
to a certain amount). We could help with an press advisory and layouts for
promotion material. But we need Your help to find local partners.
The partner will host the exhibition and stand for promotion and press
work. Would You like to check with your partners, how they like the idea?
Please take in account that I will not be able to attend You in the coming
three weeks. I will be completely offline, due to health reasons. But than
I will be back and love to share Your ideas how and where the tour should
go.
Best regards

Hi all,
I've been following and promoting the WLM contest with great joy here at
Europeana, congrats with the amount of uploaded images. Our Europeana
'GLAM monuments' category has a little over 1600 entries so far, a very
nice score.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:GLAM_images_from_Wiki_Loves_
Monuments_2012
I was wondering if you could help me adding even more photo's to our
category by indicating them as a GLAM monument. I'd like to get the best
quality photos from as many different countries as possible: eventually
the best photos in our WLM category will feature in a Virtual Exhibition
at Europeana.eu (and Europeana will give the overall winner a print
version of their photo). All help welcome, thanks!
Cheers,

Hi all,
I would like to update you on the jury process for the international jury
as planned currently. We're already halfway into October, so I hope that
all countries have their juries working on the national selections!
The deadline for sending in your national selection is *31 October (UTC
timezone)*. Please try to submit your nominations before 20 October please
- after that date I will start hunting local teams and try to get them :)
To submit your nominations, please send a list of url's of your ten
nominees (not necessarily in any particular order) to
effeietsanders(a)gmail.com . You are allowed to submit less nominees, but not
more. Please make sure in the email you send that it is clear and obvious
that you are submitting the true nominations. Shortly describe your process
(can be one or two sencences) and who was on your jury. Please include at
least one jury member in cc.
I will ensure it arrives at the jury. I will keep an overview of all
received and processed nominations on
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Progres…
.
Next, the jury will take three rounds. In the first round, they will go
down from the expected 350 nominations (longlist) to ~25-50 (shortlist).
Next the jury members get the chance to remove images from consideration by
simple majority vote. Then in a third round, the best images will be chosen
from the shortlist and ranked by the jury. A jury report will be produced
based on these processes.
We hope to be able to make the results available to you (and in a press
release) by the end of November/begin of December. We will follow a similar
procedure in writing a press release as with the awarding of the Guinness
World Record.
Please respect the deadline of 31 October! If you miss it, things get
really complicated and we will probably have to disallow your nominees to
participate in the finale.
Thank you,
Lodewijk Gelauff
non-voting jury moderator
Dear all,
as the subject of Wiki Loves Monuments calendars has already been brought
up on this list, I feel it's time to provide you with some general
information about them, our order process, and shipment information.
This is going to be quite a long e-mail, so I'll jump straight to the topic.
== Specification ==
# The calendars are going to consist of 14 pages: the front cover with the
overall winner; back cover with licencing information and information about
the contest, etc.; and 12 pages, one for each month of the year, with the
remaining top-13 pictures.
# They are going to be A4 in size, and will be printed on a high quality
paper in a environment-efficient way, thanks to the involvement of die
Umweltdruckerei.
# The weight is not yet known (definitely < 400 g per item), but we'll try
to make them as lightweight as possible, as this will have a huge impact on
the shipping costs.
== Ordering and shipment ==
# Thanks to die Umweltdruckerei, every country will receive 15 calendars
for free. The shipment of those 15 copies will be covered from the
international budget, so you won't need to pay anything at all if you order
just this number.
# If you'll need more than those 15 copies, you'll be able to order more,
but you'll need to cover the costs of the additional copies yourselves, and
also cover the additional costs of shipment.
# The cost of one copy is €3.51 (that's €2.95 + 19% of valued added tax in
Germany).
# Shipping costs for additional copies will vary depending on the distance.
You will receive the estimated shipping costs as soon as possible.
# It is currently not possible for individuals to purchase the calendars;
it will only be possible if the Wikimedia Foundation or a chapter decides
to order a bigger quantity and include them in their own shops or produce
the calendars by themselves using our design.
# The design file will be released under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 licence, and will
be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as soon as it's ready, so you'll be able
to use it for your own purposes, including selling the calendars in a shop
as mentioned above.
== Timeline ==
# All nominations for the international level (ie. results from the
national competitions) will /have/ to be in by *October 30*. That's a hard
deadline, so please, please make sure not to miss it.
# The results of the international finale of the competition will be known
by November 18; around that time, we will be starting the production of the
calendars.
# We are going to ship the calendars to the addresses that were provided to
us for the shipment of the paper notebooks sponsored by Lettera27. If
you'd like us to ship the calendars to a different address, /make sure/ to
let us know before *November 18** (deadline)*; a simple e-mail to <
info(a)wikilovesmonuments.org> will do the trick.
# Also let us know before November 18 how many calendars you want to order to
give us an indication how many you want. Final orders will be done with Die
Umweltdruckerei directly. If you don't let us know anything before that
time, we will assume you want 15.
# The calendars should be ready by December 8, and they will be sent out to
you without any further delays, directly by the printing company. For the
European countries, the shipment usually takes a number of working days;
for the rest of world, the shipment can take a bit longer depending on the
distance from Germany and from the nearest courier service hub, usually
below 10 days. Please note that we can't make guarantuees on the time the
calendars get delivered to you.
Best

I noticed that a number of images had not been properly copied to commons,
due to a mixture of flickrripper and the flickr api.
I think this is the same problem mentioned to me by Monica Mora some
days ago.
The issue can be easily detected by noting that the flickr group shows a
different
number of images when you are logged out than when you are logged in (as a
group member).
In our case, as a non-member flickr showed 393 photos, flickrripper was
seeing a
count of 394 photos (but reading 393) and as a group admin there were 396.
Obviously, those three photos hadn't been copied.
There are some photos that are only given if the request is done by a
group member.
In a few cases, the reason is clear, since the image was private (only
shown to you
due to being in the same group as the photo) or moderated / filtered by
SafeSearch.
However, in most cases the missed images were publicly viewable, and I
have no
idea why the api wasn't listing them.
The solution was to make flickrripper use an application secret and sign
the requests.
You will need to authorize it to run under your account and it will now
be able to view
all the images.
The code to do that has been committed to the original flickrripper.py
as well as the forked
flickrripper_list.py You will need to provide the flickr['api_secret']
in your user-config.py in
order to take advantage of it.
A handful of images submitted to WLM-ES in 2011 had also been affected
by this bug
and weren't copied to commons at the time. I added them to WLM 2012.
Better late than never.
In summary:
- flickrripper wasn't copying all the images.
- Update your copy and provide an api_secret (and authorise the app).
- Run flickrripper again in your group.
(if your country did not use a flickr group, you are not affected by this.
If you copied the images using a different tool than flickrripper, that tool
may or may not have the same problem)
Hi all,
2012 has been the second year that we have an international Wiki Loves
Monuments competition, and it is quite a ride! While we're not finished yet
with this years competition, it is probably good to look forward to 2013. A
number of countries have indicated they would love to join next year. Some
who have already participated this year, some who will be joining for the
first time. Some who participated this year, but not to the extent they
would have liked to.
But for a smooth organization, we will need a dedicated volunteer team for
the international coordination. This year the team consisted from Maarten
(Multichill), Elke (Elya), Tomasz (Odder) and myself with the valuable
support of Barbara who was working from the Wikimedia Deutschland office.
At least a few of this team have indicated that they are unlikely to help
coordinate to the same level as this year.
Lets put it bluntly: without coordinating team, there will be no
international competition for Wiki Loves Monuments in 2013. So the question
is... are there any volunteers?
Maybe you wonder what this coordinating is all about. Most of it is stuff
that others will never see. Talking with network partners, keeping track of
status and documentation, a whole bunch of technical stuff in tool- and
database maintenance and also a lot of knowledge transfer to local teams
(chats, meetings, workshops). The time it costs can vary widely, but should
not be underestimated (I think a few hundred hours is on the lower side).
Of course the more skills and people, the less work per person.
Would you be interested? Just drop me a note or ask some questions on this
list, in a chat or somewhere else. We don't need to make this decision
right now - but if we want another WLM international - we will need to get
started with budget requests pretty soon thanks to the more complicated
budget allocation rules we're facing. I'm happy to help get that done - but
only if I'm confident that there will be a great team once again :)
I'm looking forward to any questions or emails on this topic.
Best,
Lodewijk (not on behalf of anyone)
