I think there's still at least one campaign running, so FYI.

disabled) Friday Oct 5, 11 am UTC
To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
We're going to swap out ms7, the current media server fallback, for a
netapp. We'll start this on Friday Oct 5 at 11am UTC, to conclude at
2pm UTC or earlier. This will entail turning off uploads to all
projects during the switchover. It is possible that
ExtensionDistributor and captchas will be affected during this time as
well; other services should be fine.

Hi,
One person from our jury reported me a problem with rating the images, so I
logged in the jury tool to see what it is. It turns out I have the same
problem as Michael here, at the Judging level, except adding "&start=0"
doesn't help. I can only see the first 12 rated photos here (
http://wlm.wmflabs.org/rs/jury2.php?hide_rated=2), but when I click "Next",
some other category shows up (
http://wlm.wmflabs.org/rs/jury2.php?start=71&thumbs=12), with unreviewed
images with no stars. The only thing that solves this problem is adding
"&thumbs=800" after http://wlm.wmflabs.org/rs/jury2.php?hide_rated=2, as I
know that the person from the jury has reviewed almost 800 images - so the
page shows me up to 800 thumbnails.
> For example if I click ? <http://wlm.wmflabs.org/dk/jury2.php?hide_rated=2>

But, since it's a bit complicated to explain the jurors to manually
add "&thumbs=800",
having the "Next" button that functions properly would be very helpful.
However, I greatly appreciate all the effort made for creating the Jury
tool. GJ, guys!

Hi,
As suggested, we started moving flickr photos into commons last firday. We
moved well over 400 photos between friday and saturday, but we are now
missing photos added to flickr during the weekend so we need another pass
to complete the task.
Before running Flickrripper again I'd need to know: is the {{Wiki Loves
Monuments 2012|pa}} no longer adding the required categories for WLM? If
so, I'd need to add them manually but any botrun to remove pics added to
that category after Sep 30th should not take into account these pics (they
are all from my user, User:DNarvaez, and I did not post any photos on my
behalf).
Thanks.

Hi,
I don't know how many of you already tested the jury voting system, but I
can say Yan (from Wikimedia Israel) did a really amazing and great job in a
very short and schedule.
He decided to volunteer to do build it, and during the last 2 weeks, during
the Israeli Holiday (Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur) he manged to build a great
system, with most of the capabilities that I asked him. For more than a
month we talking about how we will rate the photos, with anything ready or
planned - and thanks you Yan now we have a great tool, which we can
continue to improve next year!
A big thank you also to Jason, who helped him with some of the tech issue
and installed version of the system to any one of you.
Enjoy the rating! :)

Hi there,
as a matter of statistics -- and also for those that value quality
alongside quantity -- besides surpassing 300,000 uploaded images, the
number of pictures from Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 has reached 650
today.
At the time of writing this message, we had 322,258 images uploaded in
total; this means that one in every 495 images uploaded this year
(0,2%) was featured by the Wikimedia Commons community as being of a
high quality. Besides those 650 Quality images, we also have 7
Featured pictures and 1 Valued image; these numbers and percentages
are obviously only going to rise in the days and months to come.
You can see all highlighted images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 in
this category tree
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Highlighted_content_from_Wiki_L…>.
Thanks

Responding to Odder (below)
I was quite surprised any controversy happened on this.
My strict reading of the rules is that, in any case of confusion, the
local contest organizers should decide, since this is a federal style
organization.
The only reason I know of that any controversy could exist is that
people started uploading before the deadline (time marked on their
upload) but it didn't finish uploading until after the deadline, so
the bot didn't mark it WLM. We probably should have expected this
(but I certainly didn't).
In the case of the US, I certainly didn't expect many uploaders in the
very early morning (6:01 New York time) or the middle of the night (3
AM LA time) but it made sense to go until midnight Hawaii time. There
were 2 photos which started uploading on time, but got cutoff - and I
didn't see any real reason to exclude them. Perhaps we could
re-jigger the bot for next year, but it hardly seems to matter for
this rare case.
Probably more important is the case where somebody starts uploading
hundreds of photos just before the deadline (Did this actually happen
somewhere?) To me that suggests something wrong, but not with the bot
or even the rules of the contest. I'm not sure I would know how to fix
that behavior.
As a start, perhaps we can move toward a greater emphasis on quality
over quantity for next year. This question won't be solved here and
now, so can wait until the results come out before tackling it. But
that's the best I can suggest about the general case.
All the best,
Pete

Hello there,
it came to my attention today that several users have been reverting
Platonides' Wiki-Bot, contesting it's "decision" about disqualifying
pictures uploaded to Wikimedia Commons after midnight local time.
I am aware of the fact that there have been probably hundreds of files
uploaded in the night of September 30/October 1, and plenty of those
did not make it before midnight. I am also aware that in the
perspective of a month, 2, 5, or even 20 minutes do not make any
difference, but we have all agreed to have this competition running
for exactly a month -- from midnight local time on September 1 until
23:59:59 local time on September 30 (while taking into consideration
the needs of countries with multiple timezones, too.)
There is an English saying that you shouldn't change the rules in the
middle of the game; I think it would apply for changing the rules
/after the end/ of the game, too. What is more, it isn't fair for
people from other countries that put a lot of effort into making it
before the deadline if you decide to accept photos uploaded in October
in your country, for whatever reason.
Having said so, I would urge every local team to give this some
consideration, and try to explain to your participants' why pictures
uploaded after midnight do not participate in the competition.
Thanks in advance,

Hi all,
We got a lot of photos which show monuments' details, so I don't know
whether to point out to the jury to eliminate those or not? I mean, do the
winner photos have to show the objects in whole?
The other thing is we got superb photos that are of low resolution
(~1000x768) - should they be eliminated as well? The first round is over,
with around 940 photos left for the main jurors to rate.
Tamara
Hi all,
Last year an often heard question was whether we would offer certificates
for the winners. Although I wouldn't want one myself necessarily, it would
be nice if we at least can make sure to use a similar design.
Is there anyone who is willing to design something? Some criteria that come
to mind:
* There should be plenty of space
* The theme color should be red (because of the logo). The WLM logo should
be prominently visible. Also 2012 should get a prominent place in the
design, as well as the name of the country.
* There should be place for two signatures, but there should always be one
(for a jury chair). The second signature could potentially be used for a
director, president of the chapter or the main organizer.
* The certificate should state:
** Name of the recipient
** File name of the photo
** Description of the photo
** Date & Place of signing / ceremony
* It should be possible to make the certificate up to four-lingual, but it
should also work nicely in English.
Anything forgotten? Ideally this would become a file that is easily
adaptable.
Any previous designs are also welcome!
Best,
Lodewijk
