Why not "*.wiki"?
Simplicity!
I originally used "wiki markup language" (WML) on the grounds that I wasn't going to distinguish between the different wiki markup languages.
But wouldn't most systems try and parse that as Wireless Markup Language? Are there actually any three-letter combinations left unused by Mime types and software data formats?
That's already been mentioned. I wasn't clear, but my comment after Magnus' proposal was one of approbation. Since *.wml is no good for the reasons given, I support *.wiki.
Umm, what's wrong with ".txt"? Since there isn't really a formalized markup language yet, I think it would be confusing and likely cause problems to use a file extension to imply that there is. At some point in the future, I certainly do plan to formalize and complete a wikipedia markup language, and it will likely resemble the current one closely-- but it won't be identical.
