The Text Encoding Initiative Consortium has a very well developed XML DTD and Schema for dictionaries, words, definitions, etc. I know one of the ideas for the wiktionary redesign was simplicity, but this could be a good building block for some of the back-end stuff, or even exporting some of the information out to users.
