Some more research: *I can now make an article in the Chinese language *Articles with a ? in the title I cannot rename. (I am moderator) *Many messages are lost to me. (not all) the lost messages start and end with a "-".
Is there a backup to remedy things??

Same here. Some of the history of a lot of articles has disappeared, I no longer have any items in my watchlist or in my contributions, and pages like Community Portal are gone. Something is definitely broken.
