The annual SEMANTiCS conference (formerly known as I-Semantics) is the
meeting place for professionals who make semantic computing work and
understand the benefits and discuss how to overcome its limitations.
Every year, SEMANTiCS attracts information managers, IT-architects,
software engineers, and researchers, from organisations ranging from
NPOs, public administrations to the largest companies in the world.
Attendees learn from industry experts and top researchers about emerging
trends and topics in semantic software, enterprise data, linked data &
open data strategies and methodologies in knowledge modeling and text &
data analytics. The SEMANTiCS community is very diverse; attendees have
responsibilities in a range of areas, including knowledge management,
technical documentation, e-commerce, big data analytics, enterprise
search, document management, business intelligence, and enterprise
vocabulary management.
SEMANTiCS 2014 in Leipzig continues our long tradition of bringing
together colleagues from around the world to present papers, panels,
exhibitions and posters, to discuss best practices of semantic systems
in birds-of-a-feather sessions and exchange knowledge further in
informal settings. SEMANTiCS addresses problems common among information
managers, software engineers, IT-architects and various specialist
departments working to develop, implement and/or evaluate semantic
software systems.
The SEMANTiCS program is a rich mix of technical talks, panel
discussions of important topics, and presentations by people who are
ambitious to make information machines work - just like you. In
addition, attendees can network with experts in a variety of fields.
These relationships provide great value to organisations as they
encounter subtle technical issues. The expertise gained by SEMANTiCS
attendees has a long-term impact on their careers and organisations.
These factors make SEMANTiCS the premiere event for our community. The

We are still in need of ideas and mentors. If you have any improvements
on DBpedia or DBpedia Spotlight that you would like to have done, please
submit it in the ideas section now. Note that accepted GSoC students
will receive about 5000 USD, which can help you to estimate the effort
and size of proposed ideas. It is also ok to extend/amend existing ideas

Becoming a mentor is also a very good way to get involved with DBpedia.
As a mentor you will also be able to vote on proposals, after Google
accepts our project. Note that it is also ok, if you are a researcher
and have a suitable student to submit an idea and become mentor. After
acceptance by Google the student then has to apply for the idea and get
accepted.
Please take some time this week to add your ideas and apply as a mentor,
if applicable. Feel free to improve the introduction as well and comment
on the rest of the document.

English Wiktionary has made a modest step toward ameliorating the FUll Text
On the Net bias by reducing for "less-attested languages" the requirement
for three citations of a word in use to just one. The result is more
coverage at somewhat greater risk of making a mistake in the entry
(misspelling, wrong definition, etc). Similar tradeoffs must exist for
other wikis. En.wikt tends to be more tolerant, if not exactly welcoming,
of contributors of entries in underrepresented languages, many of which do
not have their own wikis, than it is of would-be contributors of English
entries.
As I see it, What en.wikt has done seems reasonable within the scope of
what volunteers can do and are willing to do. A dictionary with trained
linguists contributing has an offsetting bias toward preserving smaller
languages, which serve as data for linguistic theory.
In my opinion, we also have other biases. We have a subject matter bias
toward computer, mathematics, chemistry, and linguistics jargon and against
jargon from other fields. Our coverage of Afro-American Vernacular English
lags and is incomplete even for older terms. Our definitions are often
worded for graduate students or at least college students. We have an
antiquarian and literary bias as well. I am certain that I am blind to
many other biases.
We would welcome constructive ideas about further steps or ideas on how
en.wikt could be a better resource.
