Posters & Demos Track
The Posters & Demonstrations Track invites innovative work in progress,
late-breaking research and innovation results, and smaller contributions
in all fields related to the broadly understood Semantic Web. These
include submissions on innovative applications with impact on end users
such as demos of solutions that users may test or that are yet in the
conceptual phase, but are worth discussing, and also applications, use
cases or pieces of code that may attract developers and potential
research or business partners. This also concerns new data sets made
publicly available.
The informal setting of the Posters & Demonstrations Track encourages
participants to present innovations to the research community, business
users and find new partners or clients and engage in discussions about
the presented work. Such discussions can be invaluable inputs for the
future work of the presenters, while offering conference participants an
effective way to broaden their knowledge of the emerging research trends
and to network with other researchers.
Poster and demo submissions should consist of a paper that describe the
work, its contribution to the field or novelty aspects. Submissions must
be original and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.
Accepted papers will be published in HTML (RASH) in CEUR and, as such,
the camera-ready version of the papers will be required in HTML,
following the poster and demo guidelines (https://goo.gl/3BEpV7). Papers
should be submitted through EasyChair
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=semantics2017 and should be
less than 2200 words in length (equivalent to 4 pages), including the
whole content of the paper.
For the initial reviewing phase, authors may submit a PDF version of the
paper following any layout. After acceptance, authors are required to
submit the camera-ready in HTML (RASH).
Submissions will be reviewed by experienced and knowledgeable
researchers and practitioners; each submission will receive detailed
feedback. For demos, we encourage authors to include links enabling the
reviewers to test the application or review the component.

Dear all,
As some of you may already know I have been working on a tool to
visualize the etymological tree of words using data extracted from
the English Wiktionary.
This work involved the development of a software to extract
information from Wiktionary textual etymology sections (and other
sections as well) using advanced natural language processing
techniques. The data used by the software is synchronized with the
latest release of the English Wiktionary dump.
A first version of the tool can be tested at
http://tools.wmflabs.org/etytree/etymology/resources/html/index.html
I only had six months to work on this project and I am now asking for
a renewal. The main aspect I want to improve is the visualization,
which currently uses graphs instead of trees (for the nature of the
current data trees could not be used). Also more work is needed to
refine the extraction method as still some relationships are
incorrectly extracted. For more details on the proposed improvements
see the page linked above.
This project is a first step towards the creation of a big database of
etymological relationships that can be used by linguists and etymology
enthusiasts in many ways.
As only projects that have enough support from the community will be
funded, please leave your feedback in the endorsement section (end of
page) of the grant renewal:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/A_graphical_and_interactive_etym…
I am looking forward to your feedback on the grant page.
Thanks a lot!
Best,
Ester

Dear all,
I am writing to let you know that I have just released a new Labs Tool
etytree
<http://tools.wmflabs.org/etytree/etymology/resources/html/index.html>
http://tools.wmflabs.org/etytree/etymology/resources/html/index.html
to visualize etymologies. This work was part of and IEG project.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/A_graphical_and_interactive_etym…>
If
you have ideas on places where I could do dissemination, please let me know.
Also your feedback is welcome on the talk
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:IEG/A_graphical_and_interactive…>
page of the project, if you like. Note that this is the first release! I
have written down some notes about how to make it easier to parse
Etymologies in the English Wiktionary with some ideas I have about new
templates, possibly here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:IEG/A_graphical_and_interactive…
Your comments in there would be helpful too. Some additional notes follow:
1. In the future I would like to use the nicer demo
<http://www.epantaleo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/index.html> I made
a while ago. I could not because there were loops between words that could
not be fit in trees (in trees branches don't merge). Loops are conflicting
etymologies. Many are due to simple inconsistencies that users can easily
fix, others are real conflicting etymologies and should be represented
using multiple trees. I will work on this in a future release.
2. Etymology sections rarely link to words and their sense/pos,
generally only link to the lemma. This is a problem for homographs, because
they generally have different etymological trees which get mixed up in this
current implementation. See for example the discussion on the Etymology
Scriptorium
<https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Etymology_scriptorium/2017/Februa…>.
It would be nice to have more precise links in etymology sections that link
to the correct word.
3. I am not plotting all derived words as of now to clean up a bit the
visualization.
Looking forward to your comments!
Ester
