Dear all, thanks to Wikimedia Österreich we are organizing the first international Wikisource Conference, which will be held in Wien, Austria, from November 20 till 22, this year.
We are finalizing the application for a WMF grant, and would like to receive some feedbacks: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/WCUG/Wikisource_Conference_2015
Hopefully, everything will go for the better and we will receive the money.
From there, a lot of work have to be done!
Here there is the page for the conference on Meta: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/Wikisource_C...
It's up to *you* to come up with a program for the conference :-) Seriously: it's important that this will be a community event, and community curated too. We will have many things to discuss, and we hope it will be great event. And yes: if everything goes as expected, there will be scholarships, but it's crucial that we involve our Chapters. More on this soon.
Spend some time in the weekend to give us some honest feedback! I hope you are excited about this as we are.
Thanks
Andrea, David, Claudia
*Hi all;*Good luck for the team, It's a good idea to organize this event, It is very important to support other wikimedia project other than Wikipedia.

I am very excited for this conference and happy that we listen a lot to the request of others who show concern.
I remember making this suggestion at the WMCON 15 and am glad to finally see it coming to life. I however wish to say that upon reading the conference page on Meta, I added a new line to the curriculum for the beginners section for the program.
I added Beginners Walkthrough. This is particularly important to me and i believe that was the main reason behind my suggestion or perhaps part of the reason for this conference. I thought it will be a perfect opportunity to train interested individuals who have no or little help finding their way around Wikisource.
I have tried several times to contribute to Wikisource but have no idea where to start from. So i have resorted to proofreading texts. I think often than not this is the situation people face, and will appreciate a beginners walkthrough at its very basic level.

Thank you Felix, it's a great suggestion.
The programme for the event is not done yet so it's important to get all the feedbacks now; I agree with you that a beginner walkthrough would be important, especially for GLAM partners (that could be thus interested in participating).

Just a fuzzy idea: it would be great IMHO that Distributed Proofreaders editing interface would be briefly shown and discussed. There's much to learn from it; at least, I personally learned much from it. If there's any Distributed Proofreaders expert in Wien, it would be great to invite him.

I am able to attend (yeah!) and ready to act as the fallback guy if there is no other volunteer to do technical talks.
Are some people interested to organise a small Wikisource hackathon before the conference (I'll be on holidays the week before the conference)?
Cheers,

Hi Tpt! I'm so glad you can participate, I'm really really happy.
Regarding the hackathon in the pre-conference, I'm not sure: we are expecting roughly 50 participants in the conference, and I hope them to be more, but we have to keep our expectations low. There aren't many wikisourcians in Wien, so probably most of the attendees would need some sort of scholarships, and find the funding for 50 scholarships is not an easy goal. We will need a lot of chapters to cooperate, and for that, we need all the help we can find. So, you all, please talk with your chapter, if you have one: it would be very important if every chapter can provide few scholarships.
For the hackathon, what do you think about a whole day during the conference? Or even a room that is dedicated to that during all the 3 days? Or do you prefer a 2-3 hour event but for all participants?
We are able to decide.

Hi all,
Sadly I probably won't be there :( I lead a wikisource workshop this Saturday in Rennes... (I will look for someone to replace me but that's difficult).
Is it possible to do a talk via Skype? (I can talk about the breton Wikisource, from incubation on oldws to now through LangCom :D) Will there be some talks streamed on the Internet ? and the possibility to interact on IRC or on a similar device?

Hi all; I have some recommendation about the Grant;
- The start date is the date of begin spending funds for this project, I think you will start spending the money before one month, the end date also. - You need to add a section where you have to specify the place of the event (venue, city and country) and start date and end date of the conference I can't see it in the grants. - The discussion with WMF, GAC members and Community, can stay between one month to two months (eg wikarabia conference 66 days) knowing that it remains 102 days before the beginning of the conference from now. - From our experience,in the organization of wikiarabia , you need to clarify more the program, many questions will asked about the program, you can see the discussion of wikiarabia https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:PEG/Wikimedia_TN_User_Group/Wiki...

Thanks Mounir, these are helpful suggestions.
For the programme, I'd love for it to be community-driven, maybe it's important to clarify that in the application. I really think that is the community that has to decide what to do in those days, and we already have some ideas. So, please make other suggestions :-)

Interestingly while we have a number of Australians who are very active in the enWS space, I doubt that we will all (any?) will be able to make the trek to Vienna, as fantastic as that would be.
It would be good if there was some capacity for a limited internet session for those who cannot attend. The sort of thing that would be useful is a bit of a round table where we have a bit of an agenda, and maybe use of the collaborative notes tools. Sort of things we could have is * where will the Wikisources be in a year? In five years? * what is it that we have to have, and what would we like to have? * what would make our transcription process transformative rather than transactional? Or is that even possible
If we promote and plan it properly, we may even be able to get a session to have the WMF involved with their teams for where and how they plan to support and progress the sisters in general, and specifically what do they have in place/mind for the Wikisources to foster development.
I see that on the agenda is an idea for Wikidata for Wikisource. I would like to see some planning for what can be done for a three way process for the injection of the data into Wikidata (work, edition and author), while at the same time uploading the file to Commons, and getting the data to the WS
I also see that the Wikidata for Wikisource, may also have the perspective of Wikisource for Wikidata as this needs to be a two way process, and the tools at the moment focus on the WPs interaction, but what tools do we need to make ''our'' data more resilient and integrated.
Regards, Billinghurst

Hi everyone. Sorry for the rush, but I encourage you to read and give feedback for the program here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/Wikisource_C...
The program must be finalized asap.
The organized team discussed with the WMF a few times and the program was the weakest part of our grant proposal (of course: it was not there yet). As the conference is focused on core Wikisource editors, the mayor flaws were seen in giving to space for beginners workshops and walkthroughs, so we decided to have them just on *Friday 20*. That will be the day dedicated to GLAMs: there will be an hacker space for those who want more technical workshops and the time of hacking.
Saturday will be a full day dedicated to the main issue: what is Wikisource, where do we want to go, what is the set of priorities we can work on with the WMF.
I'm unsure about to when put the discussion "Wikidata & Wikisource", because Ii know from experience it's complex, but I wouldn't want to lose the opportunity to have a lot of Wikisourceros in the same romm and *not* talk about that. As soon as we decide how to discuss this, we could ask someone WMDE to send someone from the Wikidata team...
So, please each one of you go here https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/Wikisource_C... and look at the program. Sign if you want make a workshop or something. Edit or discuss if you have a better idea.
We need to close this asap.
Thanks
Aubrey
Hi,
It sounds good to me.
I add myself about the National Library of France partnership (an old one but still interresting with useful lessons learned). Ping : JeanFred : are you available to talk with me?
Talking about the BAnQ partenership would be great too (Ernest are you available?).
For Wikidata, it's a big transversal subject. We need at least an introduction presentation on Friday for everyone to know what we're talking about and having (roughly) the same level of knowledge.

Thank you all for your input, and for those who contributed updating the program.
I'm very glad to tell you that the WMF has accepted the Proposal! https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG/WCUG_Wikisource/Wikisource_Confer...
It's now time to start organizing the conference: go to the Chapters you contacted earlier, as we need to have as many people possible with the Scholarship. Soon enough we'll start working with the WMF for international scholarships.

Thank you Asaf, I replied there, but I'll repeat here: I think your proposal is perfectly in line with the Saturday track: discussing about Wikisource identity, writing a "manifesto" and providing the foundations of a future movement-wide conversation about Wikisource is the core of the conference.
I had a very rich conversation with Garfield in the site visit he made in Italy, and now I'm more than convinced that we are on the right direction for making beautiful things happen.
The conference will be, I hope, an awesome event where Wikisource editors will gather, discuss, write software, and see themselves as a whole community. The more we are aware of who we are, the easier is to tell others. I think this is crucial for the future of Wikisource.
I really hope we'll be many in Wien :-)
