[the things we think about on long commutes and not wanting to do more work]
An issue that has long perplexed me with WD and the book and edition
properties, and translations.
If every edition is based on a publication (time and place), and someone
does a translation, then this translation is going to be a new edition,
new translator(s), different VIAF, etc. [basically it has its own metadata]
so it is a different WD entry.
Sooooo, how do we use WD to do interlanguage linking, as by it's definition
about all we could link are disambiguation pages. Seems pointless, and
self-defeating.
Regards, Billinghurst.
With the WD methodology for each book there is to be an entry for the book
as the idea/concept. Then for each edition there is to be a separate entry.
Now the difficulty that I am seeing is that WP links to the book/idea.
Whereas WS links to the edition. So there is no visible relationship from
each to the other in the WS <-> WP
Now while that may be correct it is problematic. Anyone have any clear
solution? If it is going to be through indirect linking then we are going
to need some clever lua work at enWS for Wikipedia linking in {{plain
sister}} and similarly at the WP side.
While I have attention, VIAF entries for works. Are they related to the
work or to an edition or is it both? I see that the translations of works
have a year in VIAF, and as that relates to an author it may be right but
it seems inconsistent.
Regards, Billinghurst
Just recently a new Wikidata property for linking with the Index page has
been created
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P1957
An example of its use can be seen here:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15839163
In theory it should be possible to import it automatically. Is anyone
capable of writing a bot for importing it?
Cheers,
Micru
There is an interesting hackathon in San Francisco, this friday,
pretty Wikisource related.
Tell your Wikisourcian friends in the area!

YES!
:-)
Thanks Micru for applying the renewal, and all the community for the
results achieved in 2014.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Renewal of the Recognition to Wikisource Community
User Group
To: wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Dear all,
On behalf of the Affiliations Committee, I am honoured to announce the
renewal of the recognition of Wikisource Community User Group as a
Wikimedia User Group. They have been working hard this past year and it is
the Affiliations Committee's opinion that they meet the criteria for having
their user group status renewed indefinitely, starting the date of
publication of the resolution.
Congratulations!!!

After the suggestion of Nicolas to redo the 2013 survey to find out which
are the priorities of the Wikisource Community User Group, I have started
this page to gather questions:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/Wikisource_…
Feel free to add your questions, or reshape the content. I have added some
additional questions regarding governance and personal involvement that I
feel that might be relevant.

Micru

Arbitrary access has been enabled in all Wikisources, is anybody doing
anything with it that can be replicated in all Wikisources?
And regarding badges, there is this ticket open:
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T97014
Which badges do we need in Wikidata? I was thinking of:
- Proofread
- Validated
- Export ready
Any thoughts on this? Can they be filled up by bot?
Thanks
Micru
Dear all,
Since the Wikisource Community User Group [1] has been building a reliable
track record of activities during the last two years, there was the idea of
advancing even further and tackling our technical debt with a dedicated
Wikisource developer.
I would like to draft a project in order to approach Chapters or other
organizations that can give us support in our task, but first I need to
know what are our highest priority tasks right now.
In my opinion it would be something like:
- Visual Editor for Wikisource
- Book manager extension
- Lua scripts for Wikidata integration
- Book infobox for Wikipedia to share metadata
Any thoughts about this? Does anyone know a reliable developer? Or a
chapter that could offer help? Or someone who could act as a techical
mentor/overseer?
Thanks and regards!
Micru
