Hi all,
This year again, we need to select the representative of the Wikisource Community User Group to the Wikimedia Summit 2020. This year summit is even more focused on strategy and the deadline is December 16.
There was some issues with last year process (as pointed by Gurlal report) and time is short, so I think the best would be an online meeting sometimes this week (when ?). Who is interested and available ? (both for the meeting but also to go to Berlin).
Cheers, Nicolas
This is a very good idea, do we know how many people are interested? if you are interested please put your name here that we can discuss, (I am personally not a candidate this year)

Thank you Nicolas for taking care of this.
It would be great to have someone at the Wikimedia Summit advocating for Wikisource.
I'm interested to attend the meeting this week if it could help to choose representative. I'm available most of the week in CET timezone.
I am already attending a lot of Wikimedia events and I'm not the best speaker, so I'm not candidate to attend the Wikimedia Summit either.
Cheers,
Thomas

Hi all, I am available this week (evening hours CET) and on Sunday. Even if I personally have some recommendations feedback on the creation process of new Wikisource projects, it would be cool if we can agree on some priorities to push on for the Wikimedia Strategy.

Hi,
To make it clear, I'm candidate to go to the Summit. I'm not sure if I'm the best person to represent this user group (UG) as the Summit is a « focused event for conversations on Movement Strategy » and I'm not always good at Strategy (especially for such a broad group like this UG, indeed we need priorities, hence this meeting ;) ). That said, I have a long experience of Wikisource, I was the representative for this UG in 2018 so I'm not the worst person either ;)
For the meeting, I'm also available this week. I guess to gather the most people sunday at 1 pm UTC (13:00) is probably the best for everyone ( https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20191213T130000&am... ).
Cheers, ~nicolas
and do we have the list of previous year participants? I am not sure if I can join Sunday, as it is working day in Iran but I will do my best Mardetanha

Hi, Thanks Vigneron for starting this up for timely discussion. We need to discuss how and what to present about our group in the conference. We need to take into account about experience, opportunity for people, full availability for the conference.(Not like the same person representing wikisource also doing other activities in conference), etc while selecting the people.
p.s. This year I wont be able to travel during that time. So i am not a candidate.
Regards, Balaji.

Hi Nicolas,
In this summit, we need an experienced Wikisourcer who can strongly advocate for the project, so that the project and it's communities does not get left behind or forgotten during the implementation phase of strategy. This year, we need to send someone who can opine in the implementation discussion in such a way, that it is at least ensured on paper, that Wikisource will get the support it deserves. It is also needed to strategize for Wikisource for future w.r.t. knowledge equity.
Personally I think, you are one of the best persons, we have, to represent the entire community and if you decide to go, you have my very strong support.
Regards, Bodhisattwa

Yes, I concur. I am concerned that the conference will be used to rubber stamp strategic plan. There is some unrest among other affiliates, that they are not feeling the resource support from WMF. And that WMF does not collaborate well with others. (Which goes unmentioned in strategic plan) also you may need to don your "corporate speak" hat in the essay responses to get invited.

Hi all,
So according to the framadate (https://framadate.org/DWcnhfcsWQRjFKhP) we have equality for Saturday and Sunday but Mohsen didn't vote and said he preferred Saturday (IIRC). If there is no objection, then the meeting is tomorrow Saturday at 13:00 (1 pm) UTC (time conversion: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20191214T130000&am... ).
The meeting will be at this URL: https://meet.jit.si/WCUG (just click the link, no account needed ; you may get a "Browser warning" but most of the time it's relevant, the Jitsi devs are tweaking things right now apparently). We will take notes on this pad: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/WCUG (I already included the four questions about Movement Strategy, is that the "essay" you are talking about Jim? ping @Bodhisattwa and @Mohsen as you two are in Strategy working groups your input would be valuable, feel free to comment in the pad before the meeting ;) ).
See you tomorrow!

The meeting will be at this URL: https://meet.jit.si/WCUG (just click the link, no account needed ; you may get a "Browser warning" but most of the time it's relevant, the Jitsi devs are tweaking things right now apparently). Thank you. I have the assembly of another association at the same time so I can't attend, but I'll read the notes.
This year I may be able to attend the meeting, if you find a use in me doing so. I think the last time I went was almost ten years ago (I was already advocating for Wikisource and sister projects back then; according to my notes, the only other person mentioning them from the stage was Ting!). I can easily wear a Wikisource-only hat while storing away my hats as WMIT/WMFI/WMDE member.
I have participated a bit in the strategy meetings in Stockholm but not so much in the overall process otherwise. (I was more active in the 2009 strategy and I still stand by my proposals.*) This means I would need to study the documents more before going, but on the other hand it also means I'm currently a neutral vessel for whatever message the group might want me to deliver.
That said, it's of course better if someone more directly involved in the daily activities of the group can go instead.

Hi all,
As some of you already noticed, we were talking on Saturday not only about Wikimedia Summit, but also about plans concerning Wikisource Conference sequel. The first Wikisource Conference took place in Vienna in 2015. Maybe, five years later, it is good time to organize the next event?
The only way for this to happen is to receive a grant from WMF. Recently, I have got a confirmation from my chapter that Wikimedia Polska is willing to help us to apply for the grant and to organize Wikimedia Conference in Warsaw as a fiscal sponsor https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Fiscal_sponsorships. (AFAIK this is the same procedure that was applied to the conference in Vienna).
What they need from us? We need:
* to organize various commitees (Organizing Commitee, Program Commitee, Grant Comission, etc); the discussion on Saturday showed that there are people among us who want help in theese. Of course the more people, the better * to decide *when we want the Conference*. There are two possible dates: Autumn 2020 (likely September) and Spring 2021 (likely May); we need to decide which one is preferred and the decision is a bit urgent as for the near term the deadline for grant application is 10 February (however it is a realistic plan). At the moment this question is crucial * to estimate how many people wish to participate in the Conference
The person supporting us from WMPL is Natalia.
We have prepared a short survey that should help us to find response to the above questions. The survey is here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe-0WGvjrt1UcHhAl-CMtNps85m28R22a6C...
Please, fill it if you are interested in participating the Conference.
Best, Ankry
Hi Ankry,
Thanks for taking up the initiative to organise the much needed conference. Wikisource is now a much more visible project in India compared to 2015, when we participated in the last conference. It's gaining importance within the Indian academic and librarian circles. We already have some partnerships in different parts of India and hopefully there will be a major partnership news coming soon regarding Wikisource .
Anyway, in this regard, I personally feel 2021 is bit far away. If this is not much a problem for WMPL or the user group, we can go for Autumn 2020 as it would be great for Indian communities to interact with the larger community and gain more knowledge at this vital time of growth. Please be assured, that any help needed from our side as Indian Wikisource communities and affiliates supporting Wikisource projects will be provided whenever needed.
Regards, Bodhisattwa

Hello Ankry,
Thanks for initiating this. With many issues around wikisource and much chance of learning from each other community it is right time we have a separate conference dedicated for wikisource.
Please count me in for any help regarding organising the conference.

Hi Ankry,
Thanks for taking up the initiative to organise the much needed conference.

We need:
- to organize various commitees (Organizing Commitee, Program
Commitee, Grant Comission, etc); the discussion on Saturday showed that there are people among us who want help in theese. Of course the more people, the better
- to decide *when we want the Conference*. There are two possible
dates: Autumn 2020 (likely September) and Spring 2021 (likely May); we need to decide which one is preferred and the decision is a bit urgent as for the near term the deadline for grant application is 10 February (however it is a realistic plan). At the moment this question is crucial
- to estimate how many people wish to participate in the Conference

Hi all I confirm that as Wikimedia Poland we are very happy to help you with the conference and even more happy to see your wonderful community in Warsaw! As Claudia mentioned we already had a great conversation with WMAT to get to know a bit more about their experience and to learn how to bring the best from Vienna to Warsaw. I'm happy that so many of you want to engage in the process and I already have a lot of good feelings about this event. The most important thing for now is to decide on the date which would work best for you. As Ankry mentioned - in order to have it in Autumn 2020 we need to fill the grant application till February 10th (which is perfectly doable). Having it later - in Spring 2021 gives us more preparation time but there is a risk of losing some energy overtime. But it is up to your community to decide - WMPL is more than happy to be the fiscal sponsor in both cases :)

Whilst 2020 has benefits, they are not benefits that would enable me to attend, Cannot get away to 2021. :-( It effectively becomes two weeks away for me when you take into account travel time, the days held, and recovery time, and I cannot manage that in 2020 at that time. (and yes I know that it isn't about me)
Happy to contribute.

Dear Wikisource Community,
Meeting the Wikisource community expectations, we are working with Wikimedia Polska and Wikimedia Foundation on organiziing the 2nd Wikisource Conference in Warsaw. We already had a survey that showed high interest in the Conference within the community. We also had recently a meeting on the conference organization process and its requirements. However, we are still at a very early stage of the Conference organization process. But we are hoping this event will happen in September this year.
In order to apply for Wikimedia Foundation support, we need some input from the community about the Conference goals and the community expectations. If you are a wikisourcian, you wish to participate the conference or you wish to help the Wikisource community that the conference take place, please fill the short survey linked below before January 29 (due to short deadline for grant applications). Please, also share this request among Your communities. Here is the link to the survey
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf7FnFgMLPHeyWtBqjgXwLDYvh5vxeTnsZ0...
Feel free to contact us, if you have any questions, suggestions, proposals, or if you wish to help us in any other way.
On behalf of the Organizing Commitee, Nicolas Vigneron Satdeep Gill Ankry
Dear Wikisource Community,
we are in the final stage of preparing the conference grant application:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference/WCUG_Wikisource/Wikisource...
At the moment, we are defining the conference goals. Would you like to add something here? Do you think about other important points that we should focus on? Maybe, the 2015 Wikisource Mission Statement:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikisource_Community_User_Group/Wikisource_M...
needs to be revised? Any comments are appreciated.
If you have any comments or questions, feel free to contact any member of the Organizing Committee (contact info on the application page).
We believe that all Wikisource Communities, the large ones as well as the small ones will benefit from the Conference.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee,
Ankry
Well, I forgot to mention: the deadline for this grant application is on Sunday, so if you wish to add something, please do this before this date.
Ankry
