Individual Engagement Grant project: Towards a PlanetMath Books Exchange

Please be aware of - and where appropriate, lend your support to - this Individual Engagement Grant proposal: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/PlanetMath_Books_Project -- which I've put together with PlanetMath contributor Raymond Puzio. Inspired by the PlanetMath Exchange project on Wikipedia, our aim with this proposal is to improve the PlanetMath platform and make it easy to produce mathematics textbooks, for export to places like Wikisource. In particular, part of the grant proposal focuses on developing novel approaches to mathematics OCR and proofreading, using a combination of off-the-shelf and new open source systems. Your endorsement of the grant proposal would mean a lot! Please note: although we are targeting English initially in with the proposal (as a demo), this will be relevant to other language communities as well. I've announced the project on the English language Wikisource Scriptorum, but if you can spread the word to other language communities, please do. And please let me know if you have any questions as well!

One global proofreading contest or three independent ones?

So far 3 chapter organizations have expressed interest supporting the 10th aniversary Wikisource proofreading contest (planned from 24 to 30 Nov): - Wikimedia DC - Wikimedia Italy - Amical Wikimedia However, there is a question that needs to be resolved: shall we do a big global contest or three independent contests? With the first option we would put the prices offered by each chapter in a "pool" (1 e-reader from each chapter) and then the rankings will be shared between all partipants in all interested wikisources (we would need at least a coordinator for each wikisource). With the second option each prize would be for the winner at the local wikisource offering the prize. I would prefer a global contest, even if it requires more volunteers and more organizational work, I think it is important to have solidarity between chapters and wikisources. What do you think? New, affordable book scanner

Someone should try this new model from Fujitsu, http://www.documentsnap.com/scansnap-sv600-review/ At US$ 623, it sounds like a bargain. That's the price I currently see at Amazon. But even if it were $ 800 or 1200, it would still make sense. What scanning resolution (dots per inch or megapixels) does it produce? Don't let the name fool you. Previous "ScanSnap" products are sheet-fed scanners that require the book to have the spine cut off. This is an over-head scanner looking down at the open, unhurt book. You should even be able to bring this scanner to the library reading room to capture rare books that they don't allow you to bring home. Google Code-In: Standardisation of templates.

Hello everyone, Google Code-in starts on 18 November. It is aimed at pre-university students aged 13-17. You can find more information here[1]<https://www.google-melange.com/gci/document/show/gci_program/google/gci2013…>. It is a contest and tasks are rated separately. Since, this would be the first time most of the contestants would be coding something in FOSS and would have relatively less expertise, the projects are supposed to small. I would be really glad if one of the contestants from Wikimedia, works on a Wikisource related task. This[2]<https://wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Wikisource_common_template_set> link mentions that there are some templates which are common to a few Wikisources, but have been developed independently. I understand that the reason is dependency on other templates, which follow different development routines. In my opinion, templates that serve the same purpose on various Wikisources can be just one module, instead of several implementations, as is the current situation. Although I am not aware of all the templates that are used on various Wikisources, I would suggest that a common template be used for displaying the author boxes on author pages. The design need not be the same but the backend can be shared. Challenges involved: 1. Deciding an optimal design of the template so that it works properly on all Wikisources/ 2. Making sure the new template does not break any template that was initially dependent on the author template. In my opinion, point 3 would be the most notorious of all the challenges to be handled. It would be great if someone from each Wikisource could tell how other templates are dependent on the "author" template. It might be a bit overwhelming for a newcomer, so I would prefer doing the standardisation of templates for the Wikisources, for which there are least dependencies on the author template I would like feedback from the community on the idea before I propose it on the code-in page[3]. OK, got it. I added myself as an ambassador, and will notify this in Italian Wikisource asap. Me and Micru used also the Global Message Delivery system in the past, but it's not working really well (people don't read "automatic" messages). This is a great opportunity for the brand new Wikisource Community User Group to coordinate :-D We can notify our local sources, but there is something specific that we can say? Do we need to count the namespace used in our Wikisource? Mind that we will have the results of the Wikisource survey ( https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_6taoDVAWcg6vSIZ) in few days, that will help. WIkidata phase 1

Hi everyone! I’m happy to announce that, according to [1], the support of Wikisource site links will be rolled out in Wikidata the January 13th, 2014 if nothing goes wrong. After this date we will be able to add links to Wikisource in Wikidata items and, so, manage interlanguages links between Wikisource directly in Wikidata as it is currently done in Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. The support of access of items content in templates (a.k.a. phase 2) will be rolled out later. Export books which use Proofread extension

Hi, Export function doesn't work for quite long time now for pages that were proofread with the Proofread Page extension. Is there any chance that it will be fixed soon? I think it is a quite major problem for potential Wikisource users. Best regards, Dmytro Dziuma as DixonD
