Hi,
Welcome!
Ive been running the wikipedia code on my personal machine for more than a week now and have spent a lot of time rebranding the code (in language.php) to ensure that people using this wiki dont think they are editing the wikipedia.
If you haven't already, you might want to join the developers' list: http://www.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikitech-l
We're planning to change most of those "Wikipedia" references to a generic variable which can be set (or group of variables for languages which require different grammatical forms).
Rebranding is, for the most part, not a problem but there are some points (such as when the code generates a the wikipedia software doesnt understand .. page) where people may get confused. I changed the error message to read the Phase III Wikipedia code doesnt understand . but this doesnt seem to be much of an improvement.
I think it's getting time to phase in the official unofficial name "PediaWiki". :)
However a fair number of these messages in the code can just be changed to "the wiki".
Also pages such as the Wikipedia:Feature_Requests page (Cunnan:Feature_Requests on the wiki Im setting up) are needless duplications of wikipedia pages but I worry that adding a redirect to the wikipedia page will lead to users editing the wikipedia page without noticing that they are on a different site.
We should probably set up a skeleton database that includes a link to the bug tracker on the sourceforge project page and explanation of how to use it and what it means...
Also does the development of the wikipedia code consider features that non-wikipedia sites may require? Im thinking along the lines of such things as only allowing registered users to perform edits (not that I want to do such a thing).
We at least try to keep things in mind... A number of things (like TeX math support) are switchable on a per-installation basis. More could be added, certainly.
Are there even other sites out there that run the wikipedia code?
A few, yes. See: http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia%3AProjects_using_Wikipedia_software
