What I think is unfortunate is that if that had only affected anonymous users, it may well have gone on forever.

Not really. The rationale is that it clogs the block log and adds unnecessary confusion.
It was also problematic when the IP autoblocker hit other users besides the self-blocking admin. Since the situation doesn't come up frequently, people often weren't aware of the implications, though perhaps it's better understood now after the "Every time we block Michael, we block Danny too" fiasco. The underlying issue is a matter of courtesy, especially toward non-admins.
