Well, when I want to create an article, I just go to the article URL (nowadays I even type the name into the box in the Wikipedia FF toolbar) and start typing in content; I'm sure many other experienced users do the same. However, I'm sure its helpful for newbies who can't go around linking to their article all the time.

To create a new article in the standard installation I have to create a link first. Then click on the link to write the article. I search for a module that enable unexperienced users to create an article with one click (maybe in the menu)
See the front page of a Wikinews edition, e.g. http://en.wikinews.org/
- you'll see a box which anyone can type a title into and press a
button to create the article. This uses the <inputbox> extension - not sure if this is part of the standard MediaWiki distribution.
I've for a long time considered the need to create a link as a feature. It prevents having orphan articles.
