Of course, by this rationale, Wikimedia Commons itself is an unnecessary fork, since all the images in the Commons could be put into Wikipedia itself.
additionally to stan's statement, Commons will also allow to upload more images than actually need in the articles, thus we can build up a nice images ressource.
