Relying on a third-party proprietary service which may shut off access at any time is not the best idea. This is why we've tossed around the idea of running our own map server. Wouldn't really save space ;) but would save time -- no need to generate, save, and upload thousands of individual maps except where they really need additional editing work.
Long-term, yes. But for now, we can change the service if the one we're using shuts down. We could also generate a list of map services for these coordinates, like the ISBN links.
