Actually, I have used IRC, many years ago (ANd come to think of it, we did some sort of IRC chat on Nupedia recently, too.) I generally share your opinion of it, but it can sometimes be kind of fun. I just thought it would be a great thing, if we *are* going to have a Wikipedia channel, to have pointers to instructions on how to get to it.

If you've never used IRC and don't know how, count yourself lucky. Nothing positive has ever come from realtime chat. Wikipedia is already a little to close to "realtime" for me; I like to have a bit of time to think about what I'm going to say before I start typing. 0
