I was describing to someone how Wikipedia works:
"anyone can edit" etc.
He answered with this argument:
"Wikipedia is the triumph of the average person!
of the man in the street!)"
(average meaning: not good, not bad, just OK)
I asked "why?"
His explanation:
"Great brilliant works are built by individuals.
Groups of people can only create average works.
If someone writes something good in the wiki,
other average persons will intervene with his/her
work and turn it into an average work. If someone
writes something bad in the wiki, the others will
again turn it into something of average value.
with your system (meaning: Wikipedia's system)
you can be sure that you will never create
something too bad but also never something too
good. You can create only average articles."
The idea behind his argument was that Wikipedia
will be a good resource as long as it attracts
good cotnributors. but it will soon become an
average site/encyclopaedia because it allows
anyone to join the project and edit, and most
people are just average persons and not brilliant
writers.
Do you think it's true? and how can we answer
this argument?

Hoi,
There are people who are of the opinion that we can have too many
categories. As a consequence regularly categories are deleted.
This one size fits all approach is only necessary when there is no data
that defines what categories are about. Thanks to Wikidata we know for an
increasing number of categories what they are about and consequently we
*can* make them part of what our readers may opt in or out of.
My suggestion is that we keep all categories and allow through
categorisation either by using Wikidata or categories themselves to make
them user selectable.
Thanks,
GerardM

Hoi,
I blogged about problems with NPOV. Even the people who are with ISIS or al
Nusra deserve well written articles with sources. Claims made in categories
that they are criminals or have committed war crimes need to be supported
at least in text. imho.
Thanks,
GerardM

Hello,
Please join us on the next Wikimedia bug day:
**2014-10-08, 14:00–22:00 UTC** [1] in #wikimedia-tech on Freenode IRC.[2]
We will be triaging bug reports for the Collection extension (Book tool)
in general and PDF export in particular, which were just switched to a
new backend (OCG).[3] We have two immediate goals:
1) recover 100 % of the relevant reports from the defunct PediaPress
tracker;[4]
2) get a clean list of known PDF issues that the new backend didn't fix.
Everyone is welcome to join any time these weeks, and no technical
knowledge is needed! It's an easy way to get involved or to give
something back.
We encourage you to record your activity on the etherpad [4].
This information and more can be found here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Triage/201410
For more information on triaging in general, check out
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Triage
I look forward to seeing you there. Please distribute further by email,
talk pages etc. (Collection is used on almost 2 thousands wikis!)
Sorry for the crossposting,
Nemo
