I'm starting to become a bit concerned at the rate at which we're applying
semi-protection to our articles. This morning I decided to punch in a whole
bunch of country names into WP to see what would show up. As you can see,
we're starting to see that padlock icon more and more frequently these days.
Australia -- not protected
Brazil -- not protected
Canada -- sprotected
China -- sprotected
- People's Republic of China -- not protected
- Republic of China -- sprotected
France -- sprotected
Germany -- sprotected
Italy -- sprotected
Japan -- sprotected
Korea -- not protected
- North Korea -- sprotected (to be fair, this was unprotected, then
re-protected by me)
- South Korea -- sprotected
Mexico -- sprotected
Russia -- not protected
Spain -- sprotected
United Kingdom -- not protected
United States -- sprotected
Now, this isn't completely unacceptable, but I think we can do a little
better. What are the implications of holding back a bit more on the use of
semi-protection (other than the obvious)? Could we do a bit more
vandal-fighting work to make our encyclopaedia more open?

Hello,
I stumbled into a nice little problem concerning
desambig pages. I am not sure this is the right place
to present it, but I could find no policy on it.
So, when going on en.wiki, at "Jew (disambiguation)",
you will find that it does not only include the
various meanings of the word, but also many unrelated
but homophonous words (i.e., words that are pronounced
more or less the same way).
One editor explained me that this is normal, because,
I cite: "A great many peole can't spell, as a read
though the talk pages of messages shows".
The answer is apriori pertinent, and I think it raises
greater questions: Is phonetic search a goal of
wikipedia? Should we think about possible wrong
ortographs of words and put them on wikipedia?
If the subject has been discussed before, please point
me to it.
Thanks,
:en:User:Dpotop

Yesterday I created a new article in a new language.
I noted that there are 250 languages on the list.
The new language should be number 251.
Name of the new language : Botolan - Hambali.
Where is it spoken :
This languae is spoken by thousands of people in the town of botolan,
in the province of Zambales in the country of the Philippines.
There are many residents of the United States from Botolan, Zambales, Philippines.
Many are professionals. I for one is a licensed practicing physician in California.
Another California licensed physician is in Central California and another one is
a Physician teaching Anesthsiology at New York University.
We also havee a dentist in San Francisco, CA and an Accountant in Pennsylvania.
We have numerous persons who speak Botolan - Hambali is in United States Military
especially the U.S. Navy because there was a U.S. Naval base in Zambales, Philippines
for more than fifty years.
The article was a call for all of us who speak the language to communicate and
exchange ideas and to preserve our heritage. We also have an Orthopedic Surgeon
who resides in Baltimore - Washington, D.C. area and we have several Attorneys.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lino Dial
California - licensed practicing physician.

Hello everybody here an interestin intervieuw with the new Thai ICT
minister part of the "interim" government. He makes a number of strange
statements. Basically he admits he will lie to the foreign press, he
says open source is useless and he favours netcensorship! I will put
the quotes underneath here, for the whole article go to:
http://www.bangkokpost.com/Database/15Nov2006_data001.php
I will keep a copy on my pc in case people can not open it.
The quotes:
/Lying to the foreign press:/
"I see no reason to put CAT or TOT in the stock market, but I'm saying
this to a group of Thai journalists. Tomorrow I will be talking to
foreign journalists and I will tell them that CAT and TOT will be put on
the market at a suitable time, which is not now,"
/Open source is useless:
/"On the subject of open source software, he said the current government
plan was a case of the blind leading the blind, as neither the people
who are in charge nor the people in industry seem to know the dangers of
open source software.
"With open source, there is no intellectual property. Anyone can use it
and all your ideas become public domain. If nobody can make money from
it, there will be no development and open source software quickly
becomes outdated," he said."
<>"As a programmer, if I can write good code, why should I give it away?
Thailand can do good source code without open source, he said."
/Favouring netcensorship:/
<>"The new ICT Minister expressed his belief in censorship and said that
even the most avid freedom of speech advocate would change his mind if
he sees doctored pictures of his daughter's head on a naked body posted
on the Internet.
The ICT Ministry will soon put forward draft Acts to the National
Legislative Assembly on cybercrime and on web sites that are
pornographic or considered lese majeste, allowing officials to arrest,
fine and imprison offenders."
/
/
There are enough people who are willing to work on it. They made their
own MediaWiki (http://wikii.itam.ws/index.php/Glavna_stranica). So,
the main reason for not opening is lack of the people who are willing
to work (besides political reasons which I don't want to comment).
So, what is the procedure? To make all things on
incubator.wikimedia.org? Who should give permissions to those people
there or is it necessary?
Just reading a slashdot article
(http://slashdot.org/articles/06/11/12/1425219.shtml) about an
unbranded test search engine (http://www.searchmash.com/) created by
Google to "test innovative user interfaces in order to continually
improve the overall search experience for our users".
Upon searching it asks the user for feedback:
> Were these results useful to you?
> Web Pages Yes / No
> Images Yes / No
> Wikipedia Yes / No
I suppose Google is trying to see whether users actually like getting
Wikipedia results so much. The outcome of this feedback could have an
impact upon us.

Forwarding this here because I thought this experiment on Yoruba might
be of interest to some of you .. there've been many responses on the
list already so no need to respond directly. However, those interested

Subject: [afrophonewikis] for the attention of the editors of Yoruba Wikipedia
To: afrophonewikis(a)yahoogroups.com
Yoruba scholars in Nigeria are being encouraged to
contribute to Yoruba Wikipedia and they have started
doing this but then, there are some problems (i) They
do not know how to break the articles into pages. One
or two of the articles are more than 32kb and they
need to be broken into pages for easy editing. We
would like the editors to help us break the articles
into pages and advise us how we can do this. (ii) Some
of the aricles are not placed where they should be.
The article under FOLKLORE should be under FOLKTALE.
The one under EDEE YORUBA should be under AWADA
(HUMOUR). The one under ORILE-EDEE YORUBA should be
under YORUBA PLACE NAMES and the one under LITERATURE
should be under ORIKI: YORUBA DESCRIPTIVE POETRY. We
would also like to be advised how titles are created
for new articles.
