I agree -- that's why I asked the question.
However, I don't think we should just give up on the use of the colon
character as Magnus suggested. I see the use of the colon as one of the nicer
new features of the new wikiware version. But there is the stats issue.....
Would it be just as easy to run the stats based on grouping page names that
contain certain text strings? For example, search for every page name that
has the strings "user", "talk", "wikipedia", "image", "/" and maybe "list" in
them, then group each of these, count the number in each category, remove
pages that are double counted then present several 'total number of articles'
stats on the stats page.
If this proposal would be more of a CPU resource issue than grouping by
namespace, then we could simply have these stats updated once a day based on
a snapshot of the page title database (this can be processed off-server or by
the server itself in bits and pieces whenever a few CPU cycles can be
spared).
This might be a good idea anyway, since I don't see the need to having a
stats page that recalculates the number of articles for each and every
request (esp. since the main reason for reworking the php wikiware was to
maximize efficiency).

um, now I'm thoroughly confused. The first link looked like a legitimate french wiki, but searches didn't work. The second link you sent (below) looks like the English wikipedia with a few random words in French. Here's a sample of what it shows:
"We started in January 2001 and already have abrégement 30,000 artisanats. We want to make over 100,000, so let's get to work--with few exclamations, anyone can edit any artimon--copyedit, expand an artimon, write a little, write a lot. See the Wikipedia FAQ for infrutescence on how to edit paillassonnages and other queues-de-cochon."
What am I supposed to be seeing?
Thanks,
kq

Only the specifically recognized namespace prefixes are treated
as namespaces; anything else is just a regular article with a
colon in the title. 0
well, I figured that part out, but it does it rather poorly IMO--about one word out of a dozen. Unless that's meant to be the point--that when working in a foreign language there is often something crucial that's incomprehensible.

Hello Dear Wikipedians!
German wiki-activist HelmutLeitner has started to create some BusTours
between all the different wikis. The idea reminds me of webrings, but
there are differnences. The tours shall intensify the cooperation and
community feeling between the different projects.
Helmut asked me to invite the international Wikipedia, so maybe someone
could take a look at
http://www.usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl?BusManagement
Everything is described there.
Is it something the international Wikipedia want's to be a part of?
I liked the idea enough to create a German Wikipedia BusStop.
Kurt
P.S.: Do we have a InterWikiLinking feature in the new software? If not,
maybe we should?

Hum did you click on the link for the en.wiki
(Wikipedia) that is located on the second line ???
OK; let me provide a second link then
http://www.locus-solus.org/machine/getURL.asp?page=http://www.wikipedia.com
and please somebody explain that to me...

Oh my God, that site doesn't have a working search engine. (!) how do you do it? Have you had a working search engine before? The growth on that site is absolutely astounding if you haven't--though it's still quite impressive, even if you have.

You know it's going to be hard to find any decent information on a
subject when the primary link shown by Google is the Wikipedia stub that
you're trying to work on! Has anybody ever heard of a silversmith named
Porter Blanchard? Apparantly he was famous enough that there's an
archive of his personal letters, but not for any meaningful internet
pages to have been written about him!

excellent! glad to hear it. Well, first you go to "upload files" on the right side of the screen (that part's easy enough), browse for the file & don't forget to check that the box isn't violating copyright. After you upload the file, go to the article you want to link to it from and add http://www.wikipedia.com/upload/"filename" to the article (replacing "filename" with the obvious choice.) :-)
cheers,

I've got some fairly good photos of Australian native plants etc that I
want to add to the appropriate entries, but I don't have a clue how to
do it.
