The site notice for Virgin United is ready. Thank you Brion.
Please translate accordingly. It is basically the same as our anon donor site notice.
Have fun.

Please note that the link and logo are to be included by agreement with the donor.
This is a one-day thing, so we'll want to take this version live around midnight UTC (London time) and take it back down the next day.

I don't mean to be picky, and the site notice is right, but it is Virgin Unite not United, yeah?

I was wondering how long it was going to take for someone to point that out.

Are we certain that their site can handle being slammbed by all the incomming hits?
Even CafePress went down for a bit last year for a bit after we put their link to our merch shop in the sitenotice.

That is NOP. (Not Our Problem) beside of that; the asked for it.
The current version of the notice; http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_sitenotice_2006_Q4
On EN the background of the notice was changed to transparent instead of white. I agree that it looks better.
Also the 2 graphical elements of the WMF-logo and that Virgin Unite does not look very good where the are placed now.
Would it not look better if the WMF-logo was removed or placed on the left side and the Virgin logo on the right side?

I would instead be as kind and up front as possible to such a large donor; they expect some sort of benefit by having their link on all our pages. That benefit disappears if their website crashes under the load; waking up their website support staff in the middle of the night and causing them a bit of avoidable embarrassment.
That is, unless all Virgin websites are hosted in the same place and share resources OR we were very clear to them beforehand of the possible load considerations.
Saying; 'tough, they asked for it' does not seem like the best path to me. And it does become our problem if we didn't handle this correctly and thus reduce the likihood of them being so generous in the future.

We'll see if it happens first :-)
Is there room in the site notice to note that Virgin Unite is the charitable arm of the Virgin Group, rather than just another Virgin company?
(I suppose that's a complication we can do without thinking about 20 mins before showtime ;-)

Of course it's down already. My understanding is that we were very upfront about the amount of traffic that could be expected.

Besides these valid reasons, let's not forget that Virgin Unite is indeed a charity organization working among other things to send health workers to save lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. I'd say not killing their servers is a worthy cause in its own right besides just the fact that it might piss them off.

The direct link has been replaced with an intermediate page on wikimediafoundation.org. Hopefully their servers will recover. :)
