Hi,
After reading an interesting related discussion on GenderGap, I have
queried the top 10 users of the thanks feature last month, on both the
English Wikipedia and Commons. Snapshot image attached and report link
below.
Perhaps someone might think of a suitable barnstar and award these
folks for "being nice"? :-)

P.S. This is a long query to run, taking 20 to 30 minutes due to the
nature of the logging tables. However if someone wanted to make a
monthly summary on-wiki somewhere, part of an active "be nice"
campaign, I would be happy to set up an automated monthly report (if
someone discovers this is already reported somewhere, that's cool we
can use that).

Hello,
this is my first post to this list. I think Wikipedia is a great project
and am impressed by how well it works. It seems the (lack of) funding of
the project is one of the more severe threats to its continued success.
Since (I assume) the biggest cost is the maintenance of servers, I wonder
if there are there any plans of making Wikipedia decentralised.
Let me elaborate. I'm thinking of a system where many users each would
store a small part of the encyclopedia. A user wanting to look up or edit
an article connects to another user who has a copy of that article. When an
article is updated the update is sent to all other users (that are online)
responsible for storing that article.
Are there any efforts to accomplish this? Would it be feasible?
Best,
Erik
Hello everyone,
As you may have heard, I joined the Wikimedia Foundation last Monday as the
VP of Human Resources. I am so excited to be here and help to the best of
my abilities.
One of the projects that I am currently focusing on is adding two members
to our board of trustees. I wanted to reach out to you and ask you to
nominate candidates that you think should be considered.
I am attaching a role description that will provide more insight into what
the ideal candidates for these two board slots would be. If someone you
know comes to mind, please send the name of the candidate including some
information regarding why you think they would be great. Also let me know
if you know that person is interested in the position and can afford the
time commitment the role will require or if it’s someone you think may be
great but are unsure if they are interested or would have time to commit.
Please email nominations to board-nominations(a)lists.wikimedia.org by next
Wednesday, Sept 30th. I understand that this is a short notice and not much
time to nominate, but we need to find someone that can start in Nov and we
need to contact, screen, interview, etc before then.
Thank you in advance for your nominations and have a wonderful weekend!
Warmest regards,
Boryana
Dear all,
It is an honor to announce that the Affiliations Committee has resolved
[1] recognizing the Wikimedia User Group China as a Wikimedia User
Group; their main focus areas are getting more chinese people know and
use Wikipedia, encouraging people to become contributors to the
different Wikimedia projects, and maintain the community healthy and
growing. Let's welcome the newest member of the family of affiliates
-and the fourth from the Sinosphere!
Regards,
Carlos

Hi all,
This is a personal note to clarify a some questions that recently came up,
specifically in the context of my role as the incoming ED.
My partner Wil and I are partners in our private lives. We have always both
been extremely independent, and we respect that in each other. That said we
have different roles: I am the Executive Director with responsibilities
towards the Foundation and the movement, and he is an independent community
member with his own voice.
I make my decisions using my own professional judgement in conjunction with
input from the community and staff. I don’t consult Wil on these matters,
ask him to do anything on my behalf or monitor his engagements with the
community. When I speak here, it is in my capacity as an ED.
Wil, on the other hand, has a very strong personal interest in the
community and agreat deal of curiosity about how the Wikimedia
projectswork. It is very important to him that he remains an
independent individual
able to speak with his own voice and ask his own questions. He does not
take direction from me. He will not work for the WMF or engage with the WMF
employees.
I hope this addresses some of the questions and draws distinction between
my role as ED and Wil’s participation as an independent member. If you have
any questions for Wil you can reach him directly. If you have any questions
for me or the WMF, you can get a hold of me by email or on my talk page.
Thanks,
Lila
Hi,
I notice that the table on Meta of specially granted project rights
for WMF employees has not been updated since June 2015.[1] Last year
it was being amended at least a couple of times a month.
Is this down to a technical problem or was there no need to change any
employee rights on Wikimedia projects over the last the last twelve
weeks?

Hey Wikidata friends,
Wikidata is turning 3 years old on October 29th. This is a reason to
celebrate for all of us. We'll be having a big party in Berlin and we
would love to see as many of you there as possible.
The Wikidata team also has a few more things planned where they'd love
to have videos, images and other input from you.
Find all information including a draft schedule for the event with
exhibition, editathon, award ceremony, party and more on:

Hello everyone,
I noticed on [1] that we're a bit behind schedule when it comes to
Wikimania 2017.
The Wikimania 2017 jury call for volunteers should have gone in August,
but I don't think one was sent (or at least I missed it). September 2015
is the time when jury selection should be announced (which can hardly be
done if there was no public call for jury members), and also the bidding
is supposed to open. I see two unofficial bids so far: Bali and Perth.
The former is filled with "Lorem ipsum" text and the latter is just
plain empty.
Did we forget about Wikimania 2017? Do we still want it? Who is in
charge of this process? Is this timeline accurate (since the only edit
on that page was done by a non-WMF person; however, the process
corresponds to the one from 2014 in terms of the timeline)? Is there an
underlying problem that is causing bidding fatigue (since there are no
valid bids so far)? Is it too early to go into this process altogether
(and am I just being too dramatic)?

It had started with Wikimedia Commons and then upload.wikimedia.org (so no
images) and now Persian Wikinews and I just realized except a few number of
ISPs all WM websites are blocked everywhere. Obviously analytics can give
more details.
I talked with legal team in Wikimania and asked them for a direct talk or
any kind of negotiation with Iranian government to make things easier but
It's going worse. they lifted block on CNN once Rouhani had interview with
them two years ago.
Any ideas?
Best
