Hi everyone,
The next strategic planning office hours are:
Wednesday, 04:00-05:00 UTC, which is: -Tuesday (8-9pm PST) -Tuesday (11pm-12am EST)
There has been a lot of tremendous work on the strategy wiki the past few months, and Task Forces are finishing up their work. Office hours will be a great opportunity to discuss the work that's happened as well as the work to come.
As always, you can access the chat by going to https://webchat.freenode.net and filling in a username and the channel name (#wikimedia-strategy). You may be prompted to click through a security warning. It's fine. More details at:

As many of you know, we have had one vacant seat left on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees for the board to appoint. We have now filled that seat by appointing Bishakha Datta, a journalist, filmmaker, and nonprofit leader from India. In the course of finding Bishakha, we met with a number of great people and had a lot of support going through the process, and I want to thank everyone who participated.
I hope everyone will warmly welcome Bishakha as part of our community. By way of background, Bishakha runs a nonprofit based in Mumbai that focuses on conveying women's perspectives in culture and the media. She also has been involved in other international nonprofit work, and her knowledge of India should be a great help to us as we move forward with the strategic plan. In general, her experience will be a wonderful asset and I think she is an ideal fit for the remaining board seat.
In a bit of an ironic twist, Bishakha's organization is called Point of View, but rest assured that she understands and endorses the neutral point of view approach for Wikimedia projects. Her journalistic background means she appreciates the value of an objective presentation, and throughout our conversations with her it was clear that she supports our mission and values.
We will have an official press release in the next day or so with some more information. I'm excited to be able to work with Bishakha, and I know that she is looking forward to being involved as well.

Thanks, all. Thought I would just introduce myself a bit more.
Building on Michael (Snow's) email, for the last 12 years I have run Point of View (www.pointofview,org), a Mumbai-based non-profit that puts the voices and points of view of women in the public domain through media, art and culture. We work on issues ranging from domestic violence, sex workers' rights, gender and HIV - to enabling women in low-income communities to access and use digital technologies (video, photo, net) to tell their own stories and talk about their own realities.
Info-activism, specially via online platforms, is one of the issues that we started working on a couple of years back. Our first foray into info-activism was as one of the seeders of the Public Access Digital Media Archive (http://pad.ma), which is built on open source software and principles.
Apart from managing POV, I also make documentary videos on issues of gender and sexuality, and am currently writing a non-fiction book on the lives of sex workers in India. I also serve on the boards of many other non-profits that work in the Global South, including CREA (www.creaworld.org) and Breakthrough (www.breakthrough.tv) - and consult for foundations and non-profits in India, the US, and parts of Africa.
Coming to Michael (Peel's) question about my prior involvement with Wikipedia, I'm one of its millions of daily readers/users around the world. I have yet to contribute enough by way of edits to call myself an editor.
Cheers - and really do look forward to contributing in more ways than one, Bishakha

From my perspective having more focus on women's related topics and
issues in the WMF projects would be a good thing! So I welcome your involvement; including your perspective as someone who has encouraged and empowered women to contribute in the public domain on women's issues.

I'm with Sydney :) Welcome Bishakha to our crazy projects and community. Wiki(mp)edia is diverse, huge, decentralized, a little overwhelming and full of some of the geekiest, most awesome people I know -- I hope you can make it to Wikimania to meet some of them!
And as with all new board members, staff & others taking up a role in the Foundation: if you have questions (whether about how to edit, or the history of a project, or how something works, or anything at all) don't hesitate to ask (via mail, irc, wiki talk page, etc). The community may be argumentative & noisy but we try to be helpful too :)

Following up on Bishakha's appointment, this means we now have the full complement of members on the Board of Trustees. With that taken care of, for now we have decided to dissolve the nominating committee which participated in the process. Again, I want to thank the volunteers on the committee for their service and their help in seeking out and screening candidates.
Part of the reason for this is that the board generally agreed that the committees need further reorganization, and this will likely start with the creation of a Governance Committee. For the vast majority of nonprofit boards, this committee (which may go by different names) is a basic organizational standard, designing the operational structure of the board and overseeing its effectiveness. In our ad hoc organization, we haven't gotten around to this properly, and I think the board's work would benefit significantly. One of the first things a Governance Committee would do is review which committees are needed, whether we have them or not, what their responsibilities should be, composition and so forth. More will be forthcoming as those recommendations are developed.

Our next strategic planning office hours will be: 04:00-05:00 UTC, Wednesday, 12 May. Local timezones can be checked at http://timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?year=2010&month=5&d...
As always, you can access the chat by going to https://webchat.freenode.net and filling in a username and the channel name (#wikimedia-strategy). You may be prompted to click through a security warning. It's fine. More details at:
http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours
There has been tremendous discussion around movement goals/priorities over the last week or so, and this should be a great experience to talk about them in more detail, as well as discuss next steps.
Thanks! Hope to see many of you there.

Hi Philippe,
thanks again for the heads up. We have now seen many reminders, always helpful - although every time I'm not able to make it for different reasons. But could you perhaps give a little heads up on what kind of topics are being discussed nowadays and tease us a bit to actually show up? :)
Best,
Lodewijk

Or not.
Okey so it happened that the thing was taking place at a time reasonable for my timezone. So I check http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Task_force/Living_People/IRC_Agendas
So there hasn't been an agenda in months. Fair enough agendas can be a pain. Hey how hard can it be to wing it?
So I pop in. Discussion is about Reflect . You can read about it here:
http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/travis/reflect/
Personally I think it's a bad idea to sacrifice screen real estate on order to solve the odd TR:DR problem. So I make this clear. I'm told that this is related to having a deadline. I start to make the case that perhaps things are getting a little too meta. I also make the case that a tool that is based around removing context and nuance form posts is a bad idea. I start to make the case that if there is a deadline to meet it is better to work out how to do it using technology we already know well (remember no one was considering adding reflect to say en.pedia) rather than trying to introduce new technology and hope it will allow us to do things faster to the extent it makes up for the time lost deploying it and learning how to use it. But at that point I was kinda banned.
So peeps. Go along hang out. But be careful with discussion or dissent. They may not work out too well.

You're confusing the agendas of a Task Force to the office hours of the strategy process as a whole. As stated at:
http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_Office_Hours
the goals of these office hours are to answer questions and engage in discussion. These are not formal meetings, but a designated period where Philippe and I make ourselves available to interact with people in real-time. We keep the agenda open, but at the same time, we also do our best to keep the discussion relevant. And, as with the strategy process as a whole, we've worked hard to maintain an environment of constructive, positive discourse.

The decision to kick geniice off the channel was mine. You can read the log to see how the discussion evolved and my explanation for why I made this decision:
http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours/2010-06-01
I don't think foundation-l is the appropriate place to discuss these specific grievances, and I'm happy to continue this discussion on strategy wiki's Village Pump. That said, I think we have a strong record for openness and tolerance of all views, as long as the discussion has remained polite and constructive, and I'm happy to address any general questions about this here.

Removing the ability to raise problems with a suggestion is a great way to render discourse pointless. It in effect makes a virtue of [[en:not even wrong]].

You have demonstrated a preparedness to shut down lines of debate you don't like. This being the case there is no rational reason why I would chose to raise issues with your actions in places where you were able to continue to take such actions.
Hi Eugene,
thanks for the explanation, I think the whole banning was quite justified. But besides that, as I also asked in an earlier email, I can understand geniice's feeling that it is unclear what the topics are (which can be solved by an agenda as he suggests or a description of what tend to be the topics nowadays as I asked). Could you perhaps make it more insightful?
Thanks,
Lodewijk

Realized I never responded to this; sorry about the late response.
As I said before, office hours are meant to be open-ended gatherings, explicit time where people should feel comfortable asking questions and meeting people in a more informal setting. I usually have a few things in mind that I bring up during office hours, but I don't impose those topics. I've often been surprised at the direction of the conversations, and I've almost always walked away feeling better informed. Moreover, I've found it a great way to bolster relationships, and I've noticed a lot of constructive activity happens on strategy wiki after these office hours.
Sometimes, IRC meetings are called with more explicit intentions; in those cases, agendas are usually posted beforehand.
