If you're interested in establishing a more regular North American or Europe-wide conference the for years when we don't have Wikimania in the area, then great! We can certainly use more local organization of this sort in the US, and at the Europe-wide level in addition to the numerous country-wide groups there.

Well that would be nice but would WMF pay for all these conferences? Who would organize them other than one person? This isn't a task for one or two people much less someone with no experience in doing so.
Last I heard the "Conference of The America's" is not happening. Why? Not too sure why but if I cannot afford a trip to Buenos Aires or Egypt I certainly cannot afford to make my own conference.

Hoi, There have been conferences in the Netherlands several times. The Wikimedia Foundation did not pay for the conferences.
If you want a conference, get your arse into gear and organise one.
Thanks, GerardM

I have no problem with the decision of the jury to award Wikimania to Buenos Ares. I just hope that people don't make the ridiculous assumption that South America is close to Australia and NZ, when in fact they are pretty much on opposite sides of the globe.
One question that I haven't seen answered relating to the jury process (and I might have missed it) is why was there such a long delay between the scheduled time for announcement of the winner, and the actual announcement?

Coming as we do from a culture based on discussion leading to consensus, it's a bit of a challenge to wrench the process to a conclusion ahead of the time that would be required if the discussion was left to run its course. Despite efforts to accelerate things to meet deadlines, it felt a bit like pulling teeth. Personally I offer my apologies to all of the bid teams on this point.

Ah, that's such a common situation on Wikimedia projects that I'm sure we all sympathise :)

Australia was much closer to Taipei than to any other Wikimania location yet, but at least the Aussies will not be disadvantaged against those from other continents when traveling to Argentina!
For the record, here are some approximate distances to Buenos Aires from various cities:
New York 8,500 km
San Francisco 10,400 km Frankfurt 11,450 km Alexandria 11,750 km Sydney 11,800 km
Taipei 18,950 km
The distance from Australia's relatively populous east cost is about the same as the distance from Europe or the US west coast. The US east coast is a bit closer, and east Asia is quite a bit further.
By comparison, Sydney is the closest of any of those cities to Taipei:
Sydney 6,750 km Alexandria 8,800 km
Frankfurt 9,450 km San Francisco 10,400 km New York 12,550 km
Buenos Aires 18,950 km
while Frankfurt was close for some but just as inconvenient for plenty:
Alexandria 2,750 km New York 6,200 km
San Francisco 9,200 km Taipei 9,450 km Buenos Aires 11,450 km
Sydney 16,500 km
