[[User:Mauro742]] has produced some statistics: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usage_of_edit_summary_on_Wikipedia There are great differences among Wikipedias. Apparently, sk.wiki and pl.wiki are the only Wikipedias where standard edit summaries buttons are used, and where edit summary usage is about 90%. Wha to do you think? Are those buttons useful, or maybe they make edit summaries more similar and pointless? Do they increase usability? Should we introduce them elsewhere?

Huh. Try edit any article in pl wiki as IP without edit summary ;) This question (ask for summaries) is introduced to pl wiki from cs wiki. Script (red border) has written by Nux (probably).

Thank you. When was this feature introduced? Ortega's statistics http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Felipe_Ortega,_Flagged_revision... show that the mandatory edit summary on de.wiki (which is a different feature) reduced anonymous contributions a lot.

Probably in 2007

One year before flagged rev in pl wiki, maybe even in 2006.
Nux said April and October 2006 (http://pl.wikipedia.org/?oldid=22477021 ). If that's correct, the updated statistics http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usage_of_edit_summary_on_Wikipedia show that the buttons on pl.wiki had no additional effect after the red rectangle, and something else on March-April 2007 made the edit summary usage to increase by 9 percentage points globally and almost 30 points for anonymous edits. Does someone have a clue?
About he.wiki, statistics show an increase by about 9-10 points thanks to buttons, as in other wikis.

I may have missed something, but standard edit summary buttons are also used in Russian and Hebrew Wikipedias. I am curious to know the statistics about these two.
They are often beneficial, but sometimes they cause lazy or malicious people to write "copyediting" in the summary after they actually changes significant content.

ru.wiki is included: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usage_of_edit_summary_on_Wikipedia (74.8 %) When were those buttons introduced on ru.wiki and he.wiki?

I guess that they were introduced when these pages were created:

A correction about he.wp: automatic summaries were introduced earlier here: * http://he.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Summary&diff=1293245...
