Hi everyone,
Thanks for surfacing this discussion. I want to share some broader context
from the WMF side as the person who manages our partnership with Google
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Overview_of_Wikimedia_Foundation_and_Google_Partnership>.
Hopefully it will provide clarity on how we do (and do not) work with them.
I've written more info specific to this situation below, but the tl;dr is
that our partnership does not aim to make Wikipedia or other Wikimedia
content the top search result on Google's products - that decision is
wholly made by Google. The aim of our partnership is to work with Google to
identify and implement ways they can better support Wikimedia communities,
increase content creation, and help connect people with knowledge globally.
As mentioned previously in this thread
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T325607>, this particular situation
seemingly needs to be resolved on our platform, not on Google's. That said,
we (WMF's Partnerships team) have explained the importance of this issue to
Google, and their Indexing team is going to do some analysis to provide us
with any insights they are allowed to share about what the specific issues
may be. We've surfaced this not just with regards to Wikisource, but with
past scenarios where Wikimedians have flagged similar issues with some
language Wikipedia projects.
WMF does not decide what Google indexes or where Wikimedia content ranks in
Google Search, nor does Google disclose specific details about how the
results are chosen beyond what is publicly available
<https://developers.google.com/search?card=developer>. This is to maintain
neutrality and not privilege any partners or sites over others.
We will continue working with Google to put together as much information as
possible to inform the path forward, while also underscoring the importance
of Wikisource and its visibility. We also encourage the Sister Projects
Taskforce
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_Community_Affairs_Committee/Sister_Projects_Task_Force>
to continue flagging this and other issues where we can find ways to
collaborate in our goal of supporting all of the Wikimedia projects.
Feel free to reach out to me or partnerships(a)wikimedia.org if you have
questions about any of this.

Indeed I believe my last break of an edit streak was when I was on a plane
/ connection without wifi for more than 24h (going from Europe to Japan). I
normally edit every day since I have joined (15-ish years now), but I am
not so much addicted to edit-count so that I would plan my travel taking
this into account or pay for the internet during the flight when I do not
need it otherwise. Still, nice to have these streaks having been
acknowledged sometimes.

This is a bit like edit counts, in that it
indicates nothing about the
value of the edits. In a way it is impressive that someone is so
dedicated,
but all the guy at the top of the list needs to
do to crash and burn is a
couple of days of inability to edit for reasons out of their control, so
some luck is involved.
Cheers,

Thanks, interesting, I am apparently a human #19 in the list.

Bon dia / Hi,
Is there any available tool to precisely count how many days in a row a
Wikimedian from a specifif project has been editing? The source that is
linked in the Diffs page (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_reports/Longest_active_use…
only within the English Wikipedia…
Has anyone checked that there is no other user in the rest of the
other projects (hundreds of them) with a similar or better streak, so
that
the sentence “the Wikimedian with the longest
editing streak” is fully
accurate regarding both language and Wikimedia project?
Gràcies! / Thank you!

Johnny Au <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Johnny_Au>has been editing
every single day since November 11, 2007, which makes him the Wikimedian
with the longest editing streak. That's more than 15 years or - more
precisely - 5733 days of continuous editing!
Each day Johnny checks his extensive watchlist, which includes articles
related to his beloved hometown Toronto. From local sports teams and art
galleries, to Toronto transit system – Johnny is passionate about all
things Toronto-related, and carefully watches over Wikipedia articles
about
it. He specializes in minor, maintenance edits:
correcting spelling and
language, reverting vandalisms, adding images and correcting mistakes.
The daily habit of editing and the pure love for Wikipedia, and passion
for free knowledge, is what keeps him going. When asked about advice to
share with other editors, he says: *Never give up. Fight the good fight.
We must fight against misinformation and disinformation.*
