Hi everyone,

Thanks for surfacing this discussion. I want to share some broader context from the WMF side as the person who manages our partnership with Google. Hopefully it will provide clarity on how we do (and do not) work with them.

I've written more info specific to this situation below, but the tl;dr is that our partnership does not aim to make Wikipedia or other Wikimedia content the top search result on Google's products - that decision is wholly made by Google. The aim of our partnership is to work with Google to identify and implement ways they can better support Wikimedia communities, increase content creation, and help connect people with knowledge globally.

As mentioned previously in this thread, this particular situation seemingly needs to be resolved on our platform, not on Google's. That said, we (WMF's Partnerships team) have explained the importance of this issue to Google, and their Indexing team is going to do some analysis to provide us with any insights they are allowed to share about what the specific issues may be. We've surfaced this not just with regards to Wikisource, but with past scenarios where Wikimedians have flagged similar issues with some language Wikipedia projects.

WMF does not decide what Google indexes or where Wikimedia content ranks in Google Search, nor does Google disclose specific details about how the results are chosen beyond what is publicly available. This is to maintain neutrality and not privilege any partners or sites over others.

We will continue working with Google to put together as much information as possible to inform the path forward, while also underscoring the importance of Wikisource and its visibility. We also encourage the Sister Projects Taskforce to continue flagging this and other issues where we can find ways to collaborate in our goal of supporting all of the Wikimedia projects.

Feel free to reach out to me or partnerships@wikimedia.org if you have questions about any of this.

Indeed I believe my last break of an edit streak was when I was on a plane
/ connection without wifi for more than 24h (going from Europe to Japan). I
normally edit every day since I have joined (15-ish years now), but I am
not so much addicted to edit-count so that I would plan my travel taking
this into account or pay for the internet during the flight when I do not
need it otherwise. Still, nice to have these streaks having been
acknowledged sometimes.

I think sometimes we do get too wrapped up in the numbers because we can
count them, and compare them, as a measure this is ever so slightly better
than edit counts. Let's be honest, anyone who can survive multiple weeks on
en.wp probably deserves a medal depending on the topics they haunt.

Looking at my own I see some streaks are interrupted by swapping between
projects and back again. Then as others mentioned before interruptions by
travel a lot of which has been to support, promote, encourage newcomers, or
do affiliate related work that isn't marked in machine readable boxes.  I
would say there are many people who have similar commitments, the fact they
dont edit everyday does devalue their effort either.

Lets enjoy the novelty value, let's value the effort it takes to have a
long streak while remembering it's taken a lot of dedicated people over 20
odd years to get to where we are, and the movement will need many more
dedicated people well into the future.

oh I need an edit button

the fact they dont edit everyday does devalue their effort either.

should say "the fact they dont edit everyday* doesnt *devalue their effort
either."

Hello everyone,

This is Núria Ribas-Valls (Kowalskyn
<https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usu%C3%A0ria:Kowalskyn>), the new Chair
Board at Amical Wikimedia <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Amical_Wikimedia>.
I am writing on behalf of the whole board to greet you. Let me introduce
you to the team: Daniel Gil Solés (Dgilso
<https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Dgilso>) is the secretary, Lluís
Madurell Alemany (Lluis_tgn <https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Lluis_tgn>)
is the treasurer, and finally, the three committee positions will be Núria
Ferran-Ferrer (Nferranf
<https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usu%C3%A0ria:Nferranf>), Yolanda Núñez (Raspilla
Demekin <https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Raspilla_Demekin>) and Àlex
Hinojo (Kippelboy <https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuari:Kippelboy>).

The Assembly appointed us on July 8th; here
<https://wikimedia.cat/2023/07/11/la-nova-junta-damical-wikimedia-aposta-per-reforcar-lactivisme-pel-catala/>,
you can read the news in Catalan.  In brief, our work axes will be six:
community, Catalan language, open knowledge, projects, diversity, and
international. We are also committed to adapting the Anti-harassment
Protocol to Wikimedia's Universal Code of Conduct. Regarding the
international level, we will try to learn from other Wikimedia communities
worldwide: your initiatives, projects, and so on. We are interested in
terms of content but also in community management, health care, and
attention to diversity. With all that in mind, you will hear from us soon
enough.

We are delighted to be part of the community!

Greetings,

Daniel, Lluís, Núria, Yolanda, Àlex and Núria.

Has anyone tried telling the Google Search Console to index all the
Wikisource language domains? Presumably a Foundation sysadmin would
need to add the ownership verification tokens to do so:

This has already been done for a while.

Once done, the sitemap has to be updated regularly in order to include the

I did look into this, but it seems like we do not generate sitemaps for any
sites right now ? The closest I got was
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T198965 which mentions that we did
generate them around 2018 and hosted them on sitemaps.wikimedia.org,
however they were recently (in Jun 2023) deleted due to the sitemaps being
out of date and not helping our SEO rankings for Wikipedia.

Also while digging this up right now, I came across
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T332101#8898869 which assumes that Google
uses a RCFeed/EventStreams API provided by the Wikimedia Foundation to
index pages. Is this true in the case of Wikisource, could it be possible
that they (Google) might not be using this for Wikisource and/or Wikisource
pages are getting filtered out (on Wikimedia Foundation's end) due to some
configuration error ?

Regards,
Sohom Datta
