Subject: [wmau:members] Pitch In! Oral History transcription pilot
To: Wikimedia-au <wikimediaau-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Cc: Pip Kelly <Philippa.Kelly(a)slq.qld.gov.au>
Hi,
The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) Pitch In! project has three more
weeks to go.
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:WikiProject_SLQ
New users and anons are still appearing whenever the SLQ promote the
project on social media. e.g.
https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChangesLinked&day…
SLQ has added an oral history to be transcribed, and after a bit of
fiddling we have the transcription project ready. It is a 1h20m
interview of Ian Charlton, a retired Queensland architect. SLQ has a
large collection of similar interviews of significant architects, and
hope this pilot will clear the way for more similar uploads.
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:Ian_Charlton.ogg
The Proofread Page software doesnt have any special support for ogg
files, however each page has a player preset to the desired starting
point for transcription. The player should jump forward without
needing to download the 80meg audio file. e.g.
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Ian_Charlton.ogg/17
This transcription can then be 'incorporated' into the ogg file using
the new Timed Media Handler. I've done a quick demo here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Ian_Charlton.ogg.en.srt
This is new territory for Wikisource, and the Commons timedtext
feature is also fairly new to most of us. It would be great if a few
members of this list can play around with this ogg project a little
and report problems. Next week newbies will be asked to contribute to
this transcription.
There is a centralised discussion at

Hello community,
this is to inform you that in response to the trademarking of the
Wikimedia community logo[1], created in 2006 by Artur “WarX”
Fijałkowski, which was discussed on this mailing list[2] as well as on
Meta[3] back in March, a small group of community members—Artur, myself,
Federico Leva (Nemo) and John Vandenberg—have initiated a formal process
of opposition against the registration of the trademark by the
Foundation in order to *reclaim the logo* for unrestricted use by the
community.
We appreciate the Foundation’s protection of the other trademarks they
have registered so far, including the logos of Wikipedia, Wikisource and
some other sister projects. In the case of the community logo, however,
it is our belief that the Foundation’s actions are exactly opposite to
what the community logo stands for and contradict the purpose behind its
very existence.
We would like to make it clear that it is not our intention to damage
anyone; our actions are a challenge against what we perceive as
unilateral declaration of ownership of an asset that has always belonged
to the wider community, and not to one or another organisation that is
part of the movement. By formally opposing the registration of the
trademark we hope to ensure the history of this logo is not disregarded,
and we wish to protect the community against unnecessary bureaucracy
and, to use another quote, let “groups who do not purport to represent
the WMF”[4] to continue to be able to freely associate with a logo that
has been part of their identity for so long.
We also want to note that this is in no way a legal action against the
Foundation, but a simple notice of opposition against the registration
of the logo in the European Union. If we assume good faith, we can only
be confident that the WMF, having now a formal occasion, will withdraw
its registration of the logo rather than continue using movement
resources to force the community into lengthy, expensive proceedings.
We invite all community members interested in this issue to express
their opinions at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Community_Logo/Reclaim_the_Logo
If any of you would like to help us in any way (covering the costs of
the opposition, promoting the discussion, etc.), please feel free to
contact us off–list.

[translation in Portuguese below]
Dear friends and colleagues,
tl;dr We are planning on partnering with the non-profit organization Ação
Educativa to carry out Wikimedia program work in Brazil, funded by a
partnership grant from the Wikimedia Foundation. This letter explains the
context for the proposed partnership, and calls for community input on the
plan.
Context: After identifying Brazil as a high-potential development target
for the Wikimedia movement in 2010, and the hiring of a team of consultants
in early 2012 to form the Brazil Catalyst Program,[1], the Wikimedia
Foundation's Board of Trustees determined in 2012 that the Foundation
should "narrow its focus",[2] to concentrate on supporting global Wikimedia
communities through two core competencies -- technology and grantmaking.
In line with that narrowing of focus, the Foundation is looking to partner
with local organizations to execute programmatic activities in partnership
with the local Wikimedia communities, rather than to have consultant teams
in place. The catalyst program in India was transitioned to a grant with
the Centre for Internet and Society[3] in July 2012 [4] as part of its
Access to Knowledge (A2K) focus,[5] and the Brazil team has similarly been
exploring the possibility of a similar partner in Brazil.
On Ação: Ação Educativa [6] (literally: Educational Action) is a not for
profit civil organization that has been working over the past 18 years in
Brazil on rights to education. In order to achieve this, it builds capacity
among social movement groups, schools and communities for the production
and dissemination of knowledge and the mobilization and impact on public
policies. Its mission is to promote the rights for education, culture and
youth, aiming at social justice, participatory democracy and sustainable
development. Ação Educativa has extensive experience in building and
strengthening communities in the education and human rights fields,
including more globally.
On the partnership: The Brazil team of consultants, led by Oona Castro, has
been in conversation with the Brazilian Wikimedia community about a
transition to a partnership grant since October 2012 [7]. For several
months, Oona and her team researched potential partners, exploring over 15
local organisations who had an affinity to the Wikimedia movement in
values, mission and programmatic scope [8]. In February 2013, the team
shortlisted two organisations - Ação Educativa and Coletivo Digital - and
visited them, with community volunteers [9] [10]. I joined them on this
visit. After these meetings, Foundation staff, the Brazil team and
community members discussed the pros and cons of both organisations. While
both are well aligned to the Wikimedia movement’s mission and work,
particularly in Brazil, the team felt that Ação Educativa has the stability
and sustainability to offer the Brazil team - and the Brazilian community -
a strong institutional home and partnership. In addition, Ação Educativa
offers critical value with its considerable experience and expertise in
growing communities and networks in the field of education, at the same
time as it sees value in the Wikimedia movement’s expertise in online
communities and free knowledge. The team continues to feel that it is
likely to partner with Coletivo Digital on specific projects.
Budget: The budget for 2013-14 is 557,863 USD (R$ 1.115.726)
Invitation to review: As I mentioned in my letter to the community a few
weeks ago,[11] we intend to have partnership grants be reviewed by both
local Wikimedia communities as well as the global. We therefore welcome
community review of the proposed project plan and budget. Please read the
materials on Meta,[12] and join the conversation on the talk page. We will
be engaging in this conversation for three weeks from now - till October 10
- after which we hope to proceed with establishing the partnership (based
on changes or comments arising from the community review).
Feel free to respond with questions or clarifications on the talk page.
Thanks,
Anasuya Sengupta

Prezados amigos e colegas,
[1], o conselho diretor (Board of Trustees) da Wikimedia Foundation decidiu
competências essenciais: tecnologia e financiamento a projetos (grantmaking).
social, a democracia participativa e desenvolvimento sustentável. A Ação
comunidade [9] [10]. Eu me juntei a eles nessa visita.
Embora ambas sejam
brasileira - e à comunidade brasileira - forte abrigo e parceria
institucionais.
conhecimento livre.
pelas comunidades local e global.
Obrigada,

Hello,
The Wikimedia Language Engineering team will be hosting an IRC office
hour on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 between 17:00 - 18:00 UTC. (See
below for timezone conversion and other details.) We will be talking
about some of our projects that are in development, a short round up
from Google Summer of Code and then taking questions for the remaining
time.
If there are things that you would like to bring to our attention then
this would be a good time to do so. Questions can also be sent to me
directly before the event. See you there!
Thanks
Runa

Hi,
This event can be installed to any city: given the requirements I can
organize it at any city having a conference centre large enough, from
Sopron, Hungary (
http://www.prokultura.hu/hu/konferenciak/rendezvenytermek.html , 5 section
rooms, 2 large halls, a theatre, etc.) to Mexico City, Mexico (
http://www.centrobanamex.com.mx/en/installations/ this technically a
stadium) and anywhere in between each direction. All of these locations
have staff, therefore it is just a matter of how much WMF is willing to
spend on it.
The thing is that you should start building from the bottom, not from the
top. A venue can be secured as late as 3 months before the event to give
everyone enough time to plan and get cheap tickets (and I mean first
minute, not last minute). Most airline and international train tickets are
the cheapest if you buy them ~3 months in advance. Not much later, nor
earlier, because both are being "penalized" by higher fees. We can find out
where to have the event as late as early January

Hey everyone,
this is just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday, 20 September 2013, is the
last day open to submit session proposals and apply for scholarships to the
Wikimedia Diversity Conference [1], taking place on 9 and 10 November 2013
in Berlin, Germany.
You may still register for participating in the conference until *20
October 2013*, but there will no longer be an option to apply for
scholarships and submit session proposals.
For further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the
organising team [2].
Kind regards,
Cornelia

Hi all,
This summer has been filled with vibrant anticipation for many of you (and
all of us) about the outcomes of the Affiliations Committee's annual
meeting at Wikimania, and more importantly the lodging choice.
Today, as the last days of summer approach, I would like to provide you
with an update: we have published a report of the meeting at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliations_Committee/Resolutions/Budget_re…
As regards the hotel choice: we had no influence on the matter, but despite
original assumptions, we were assigned to a different hotel than the one
most of the WMF staff was in...
Let me know if you have any questions.
Also, if you feel like the topics on AffCom's plate interest you, we are
always looking for new members:

Best regards,
Bence

Hi there,
please find the English translations for Wikimedia Deutschland's monthly
reports of July and August 2013 on Meta. They contain much information on
