This month it is the 4th year that volunteers from Wikipedia and Wikimedia organize Wiki Loves Monuments, an international photo contest focused on monuments, the cultural heritage the world has. In 2010 it was organized for the first time in the Netherlands only. That was big success and was in 2011 expanded to 18 countries in Europe. In 2012 it went worldwide with 35 countries around the globe. In 2012 the Guinness World Records recognized the 2011 as the "Largest photography competition" in the world. Last week we received the message that they recognize the 2012 as the largest now, but has to be updated on their website, see: http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records-6000/largest-photography-compet…
The day before yesterday on 1 September the 2013 edition started with more than 50 countries. On the first day already more than 14.000 new images of monuments have been uploaded. All these images will enrich the lists of monuments on Wikipedias and the articles about specific monuments, so that our cultural heritage becomes visible to the public.
To inform visitors of Wikipedia and Commons that Wiki Loves Monuments is going on and everyone can participate, we have set up a notice on top of every Wikipedia or Commons page if the visitor lives in a country where the photo contest is organized. If the Wikivoyage community wishes, it is also possible that this notice is shown above Wikivoyage pages to inform visitors and users of Wikivoyage that they can participate.
Each participating country has a national team that organizes the competition, with a jury, prizes, lists of monuments, website or landing page. The winners of each country (the ten best pictures) will also participate in the international contest and can there win prizes as well.

Something to be proud of, that we all together are working on making the cultural heritage of the world visible and that so many people participate with so many pictures.

Monetize it?
I am in no way going to defend my government on most of this given that I
think they are doing much of it unconstitutionally and much of the rest
immorally (though I will say that we would/do fight our ass off against
inappropriate demands and that the demands that would be placed on us in
Europe are actually worse so I really wouldn't agree with this supposition
that the US is significantly worse then the rest of the world... though I'd
agree that we're less 'better' then we like to claim) but how do you think
they will *monetize* it?
We at WikiProject Medicine are working on a collaborative effort with
Translators Without Borders (TWB), a group which includes 2,000 or so
volunteer translators. We are working to translate key medical articles
into as many other languages as possible. Currently we have translated
content into 50 or so languages amounting to 2.3 million words of text.
The process involves first bringing articles to either GA or FA status in
English. They are then delivered, with MediaWiki markup in place, to the
TWB website where the text is sent out to the translators. Once translated
we at Wikipedia are notified via orange links on this page here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:MED/Progress
This issue currently is that we are missing Wikipedians in some languages
to add / combine the translated content into the respective Wikipedia. Some
of the article created through this process have reached feature article
status including translations into Hungarian of anaphylaxis and
hypertension. We currently have translated content in the following
languages waiting to be integrated:
Hindi
Chinese
Persian
Tagalog
Indonesian
Macedonian
Greek
Bulgarian
Danish
Polish
Swedish
Arabic
Ukrainian
Dutch
Czech
Serbian
Slovenian
Spanish
Telugu
Tamil
Punjabi
Turkish
Kurdish
Thai
Swahili
Yoruba
Kinyarwanda
An overview of the efforts can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:TTF
If you are interested in getting involved in adding translated articles
instructions are here:

If you have further question or comments I would welcome the feedback.

A few months ago, I wrote that I plan to retire from all my Wikimedia
positions after Wikimania. Now Wikimania is almost a month ago and I've
moved on to a new job IRL, I think it's time for me to unsubscribe from
most of the mailing lists. Thanks for the love over the last 3 years.
I'll stay subscribed to the low-volume wikimediauk-l,
wikimedia-asia-chapters and wikimania-l so I might still pop up in certain
topical discussions :)

LsjBot has now finished generating articles of all animals and insects.
it become close to 1 M. The articles are fine [1] and represent
increased knowledge, but have problably only have had a limited effect
on access to and edits on sv:wp. Sverker will after a pause continue
with all plants (a few 100 thousands) and then plan to put all data in
Wikidata
NaskoBot is now 95% ready generating articles on all Swedish lakes,
50.000 (whereof a third not even having a name..) [2]. These articles
are seen as very sound and really better then the ones manually created.
Here we see these have generated an increased participation and edits as
people now can get a proper links to all lakes in other geographic
articles, and it is easy to complement the generated lake articles with
local info and photos. We know these article generate "new" accesses,
but it is still too early to know how many and how it will effect
earlier webbsites with some of this info
Our next initiative we are working with is to get all data of Swedish
communes, cities and towns 100 % correct in Wikidata (and also a
semiautomatic update link to Wikidata from the Swedish statistical
authorities databases). We thought our articles on these subjects were
fine, but find we need to put in 6-9 month time to get the data from
fine to 100% correct, and all the relevant data elements in place in
Wikidata even if it only a few thousand articles . When we are ready we
will have all the base data for these entities taken from Wikidata (not
giving much improvement) but more important we will be able to provide
100% quality data for other language versions to semiautomatic get data
(or generate articles) of these subjects, where we feel a special
responsibility to secure global quality for.
We are familiar with the impressive work Cheersbot has done on vi:wp (a
few hundred thousand article generated, on plants, geographical
entities) and of course some knowledge of the work on nl:wp (several
hundred thousands of articles generated), they were the one who inspired
us. But we are missing insight from initiatives on other language versions.
Are there other experiences that can be shared or is there a metapage or
does it exist a maillist more dedicated to discuss these issues? (it is
close to wikidata issues but it is not about the technicaliites of
Wikidata hut more about how to implement use of basic data that involves
special challenges outside of the wikidata technique)

Hello! I think many of you will be interested in reviving this
proposal. I believe there is still a great desire (and need) for a
more organized system of dealing with new sister project proposals and
proposals for closing sister projects. Please also consider continuing
the discussion on Meta.

Help us decide which policy issues are important to Wikimedia by filling
out a questionnaire [1]
Hello everybody,
Wikimania and most people's summer holidays are over, in Brussels
bureaucrats are slowly retunring to work and it is time for us to step up
our activity. This being said, there is not monitoring report of August,
instead, please help us get as many Wikimedians as possible to fill out our
survey!
We as a community are an active and prominent part of "the internet".
Still, we can't deal with each and every issue it comes across.
We are trying to build up a structure [2] that lets us monitor policy
procedures with future impact on our work and are hoping to articulate our
needs and wishes. It is therefore crucial to us to know what as many people
people within our movmement think and which topics they deem important. In
short:
Which policy issues should be on our priority list?
The survey [1] takes less than 10 minutes (I personally nailed a 6:34) and
will help us immensely with our strategy planning. It is intended to also
define the questions in a survey we are planning to send out to political
parties ahead of the European Parliament elections 2014.
Thanks for the help and have a great autumn!

The OSM equivalent of Wikimania, State of the Map
<http://2013.stateofthemap.org>, is in Birmingham, England (my home
town), from 6-8 September, just under two weeks away (places are still
available!). I will be there. Are any of you coming? Should we have
Wikipedia meetup?

Hi all,
I just wanted to announce that there is right now a brand new wikimedia
mailing list dedicated to Open Access.
You can subscribe here:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/openaccess
As there are quite a few projects running between the Open Access world and
Wikimedia,
we felt it was a good idea to have a specific spot for our discussions and
work.
We'd be happy to welcome librarians, wikipedians, wikisourcians,
researchers and OA advocates interested in doing concrete stuff to
integrate more the OA and the Wikimedia movement.
You are welcome to join us.
Aubrey

COMMUNITY: supporting and mobilising volunteers and editors
Wikipedia Café.
WMNL revived an old tradition: the Wikipedia Café, an informal pub meeting
of Wikipedians living in a specific area. On July 2 a Wikipedia Café was
held in The Hague, with eleven wikipedians attending. The next one is
scheduled in Amsterdam
WORK: content, collaboration and activity development
Editathon classics
As part of a Summerschool organised by the departments of classical studies
of the Amsterdam Universities, WMNL organised an editathon focussing on
translation of Latin inscriptions of monumental graves. Seven participants
produced Wikipedia articles and added information to Wikisource.
Wikipedians in Residence
The Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB, national library of the Netherlands) and
the Nationaal Archief (NA, national archives of the Netherlands) are aiming
to put the largest and most diverse collection of textual heritage in the
Netherlands at the service of Wikipedia and related Wiki-projects. To
support this ambition, both institutions have attracted the experienced
Wikipedian Hay Kranen as their Wikipedian in Residence. He will act as the
linking pin between the rich (paper and digital) collections of the KB and
NA and the reuse of this content on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and
Wikisource.
12 Dutch scientific libraries have joined forces to hire 2 Wikipedians in
Residence that will support them for a year, starting in October 2013.
A fourth position for a Dutch Wikipedian in Residence is in preparation,
more information about this position will surface soon.
Wiki loves libraries
Preparations have been made to revitalise the project Wiki Loves Libraries.
A first brainstorm with BiSC, the service bureau for libraries in the
province of Utrecht, will take place in September.
Wiki Loves Monuments
Work kicked off in earnest in preparation for Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.
This year, there will be a special focus on the city The Hague, where we
will organise a photography workshop and an editathon. The team is
supported by Kathinka, an intern at the WMNL office.
