Per http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Licensing_policy
Wikipedias wanting to use non free content need to have an Exemption
Doctrine Policy in place by March 23. This being the case does anyone
have a list of Wikipedias and other projects with an Exemption
Doctrine Policy? In addition does anyone have any idea how we are
planning to enforce this on projects without an Exemption Doctrine
Policy?

The United States Holocoaust Memorial Museum has a symbiotic relationship
with Wikipedia also, but in a way that raises no objections. The image
below is featured in different versions (restored and unrestored) on both
Commons and en:Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Stroop_Report_-_Warsaw_Ghetto_Uprising_0…
Originally en:Wikipedia had featured a smaller version of that image and in
January 2008 its featured status was under review due to size issues. I
contacted the museum and they uploaded a higher resolution version. This
was a generous act on their part because the Museum relies on the sale of
high resolution images for part of its operating funds. In return they're
credited as the source with an outgoing link to their website, and at some
point the image will spend a day on the main page.
Most well-established nonprofit organizations have a standard means of
giving a tasteful thank-you to donors. As anyone who's watched U.S. public
television knows, that's not the same as advertising. Has anyone at
Wikipedia done a survey of how successful nonprofit websites resolve this?
I checked out the PBS and USHMM websites and looked at a few of their
solutions.

I am thinking of having the link to poll included in one of those announcements you see on En.wp, as well as the Village pump, AN, and the community portal.

Who do you propose that we poll? I have suggested that we poll the visitors
to Special:Search, as they are the folks who will actually be looking at the
advertisements. That poll has definitely not occured. I think it's clear
what will happen if you seek out active contributors to Wikipedia. Those
with the loudest voices will drown out those who were unaware of the "poll,"
as demonstrated here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Polls#Numbers_of_users_for_and_against_ads_o…

Looking for last minute shopping deals?
Find them fast with Yahoo! Search. http://tools.search.yahoo.com/newsearch/category.php?category=shopping
Let me rephrase my suggestion of a bounty board. What users would do is offer to donate a certain sum to the WMF if a certain feature is done. Users would be able to up the pool for a certain item. Everyone is a winner.

Hi!

Well, foundation doesn't really _own_ mediawiki, nor its development
- it is GPL project, and no external contributors have their rights
assigned. It has few major committers who do great work on mediawiki
to support the live sites.
Who would operate that pool? Would that pool be used to pay for WMF
developers, or for 3rd party contributors only? Should WMF sponsor MW
development in any way, if there is separate dev pool, etc :)
And of course, we can put "support mediawiki development by donating
to wikimedia foundation" links everywhere. actually, every time
someone wants to donate for mediawiki help/development/.. we already
did redirect to foundation.
Sometimes people go with "But I want to thank you directly guys", and
get the answer "So donate to WMF" :)
Volunteer developers do it because it provides value to WMF anyway.
It is WMF role to decide if it wants to pay back in any way.

I agree. Pop up ads would be better than inline ads.

You kinda got me concerned when you said "pops up" but then I read the rest
of the sentence. It also got me thinking.
Pop-up ads would be better than in-line adds. Granted more annoying but
would be less of a compromise from NPOV. Basicaly we would cover the screen
with the ford logo rather than put the ford logo in the middle of the page.

Dear all,
Wikimedia CH had its General Assembly last saturday and the relevant
documents have now been uploaded to our website:
http://www.wikimedia.ch/General_Assembly_2008/Documents
The Annual Report and the Minutes of the Assembly are available in
English, the other documents (Financial Report, Audit Report, Budget)
are at the moment only accessible in German, though the budget and
financial report might even be comprehensible for non-German-readers.
Yours,
Michael
Well then you can adjust it. This is just meant to be a start

1st thoughts: Why? What purpose is this resolution meant to serve? Is that
purpose best served by this resolution or are there other, more suitable
approaches? What are the likely side effects and unintended consequences?
2nd thoughts: From a technical perspective, all board members are appointed.
The elections are (albeit very strong) recommendations on who should be on
the board. How does the resolution fit into this framework?
3rd thoughts: When drafting resolutions, one generally uses "should" to
express something that "would be nice to have" and "shall" to express what
is to and will be done. Therefore, in the first resolved clause, it should
say "shall be amended".
4th thoughts: Another technical question remains open with what is to happen
between the irregular vacancy of an elected member's seat and a
corresponding interim appointment when during that period the portion of
appointed members might exceed 1/3.

Please translate this announcement into other languages and forward it
to other mailing lists and village pumps. (The translators list has
already been notified and will help with this process.)
The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Germany have collaborated, with
financial support from Wikimedia France, to support development of a
new extension to our software
which makes it possible to flag versions of wiki articles as having
reached a certain quality. This new toolset could mark the beginning
of a new era for Wikipedia and its sister projects, giving readers
more transparency than ever about the quality of a given article. A
special note of thanks to Aaron Schulz, who has developed much of the
functionality as a volunteer -- we would not be where we are today
without him. The ongoing support and patience of Philipp Birken from
the German chapter was also critical.
Before this functionality will be enabled on any Wikimedia project, it
needs to be tested thoroughly for usability, bugs, security and
performance. Test wikis have been set up in English and German
(because the German Wikimedia community has been driving the
development of this functionality from the beginning).
http://en.labs.wikimedia.org/http://de.labs.wikimedia.org/
These wikis contain a copy of the Wikibooks database. This copy is
completely separate from the "real" Wikibooks, so do not worry about
destroying anything of value. Please follow the instructions on the
Main Pages to participate. If you do not speak English or German, we
encourage you right now to
- set up test wikis independently using the open source extension
available from http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:FlaggedRevs ,
or
- change the user interface preference, and create pages in the
English test wiki in your language.
This is due to our limited capacity to set up additional wikis. If you
feel you really, absolutely, strongly need a test wiki in your
language, please file a request through:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/
Wikimedia communities will also have to decide what kind of
configuration to use for their project. Key questions to answer
include:
- What quality attributes should there be?
- Who should be permitted to flag changes as having been reviewed for
vandalism, or for other quality attributes?
- Should the default view for unregistered users change to the "stable
version" on all pages, some pages, or no pages?
The German Wikimedia community has implemented a particular
long-standing community proposal and will probably go live the soonest
with this configuration; other communities will still have to develop
consensus.
== What's next? ==
The test will run at least until April 10, 2008 before the extension
is implemented live on any wiki. This is to allow any serious problems
to be surfaced by the community. If there are no critical open issues
as of April 10, any language/project community will be permitted to
file a request through https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ to activate the
extension. This request will have to point to pages in the project
indicating a consensus to move forward. Detailed instructions to do so
will be posted on the test wikis.
