Notafish (Delphine) has told me on my talk page that the 3D masthead I
made for my redesign of the www.wikimedia.org portal (which
incorporates the Wikimedia Foundation logo) violates a
newly-publicised Wikimedia Foundation policy about the use of the
Wikimedia logo.
Delphine also tells me that the file should also be deleted from the
Commons as well. Apparently the policy this image violates is that no
derivative of the logo may be used without the prior approval of the
Foundation.
Is there any chance the Board would approve my derivative of the logo?

and the logo policy that was made public after my logo had been on the
portal for several days is:

Forgive me for being a cynic, but was that policy made public solely
as a result of my logo derivative, in order to have it removed from
the portal? Apparently that policy had been on some "Internal Wiki"
for quite some time beforehand. If someone didn't like the logo
derivative I made then they could have just told me.

Good to see Wikimedia going for a visual identity guide.
Could I suggest the official Pantone colours for the logo, even though we
likely never intend to do Pantone printing? It would be handy to have, as
most corporate identity packages specify them.
The "coated" colours would be:
Red: PANTONE 215
Green: PANTONE 347
Blue: PANTONE 660
Grey: PANTONE Cool Gray 11
I can also figure out the uncoated paper colours, if wanted.
May I suggest also creating styleguides for the other logos, also available
strictly on the Foundation website? Finally, this page is a good collection
of other brand guidelines (http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/guidelines/).

the results of an accuracy comparison between WP and EB. While the
Wikipedia articles often contained more inaccuracies than Britannica's,
they don't look at the article sizes in each case. With Maveric149's
help, I did:

Result: Average article size for Wikipedia: 6.80 KB; Britannica: 2.60
KB. Number of errors per 2KB for Wikipedia: 1; Britannica: 6.
Put another way: Wikipedia has 4 errors to their 3; our articles were
also 2 1/2 times longer on average.
Can someone please check my math, I did this pretty fast, and was half
asleep :) It's not 100% accurate, but I was only going for a ballpark
estimate. Note: we copied the displayed WP text, not the edit box text,
and removed the TOC, See also, references, external links, and any other
big tables or lists. The WP text came from just before the Nature
article was published.
Raul654 and I separately submitted stories to Slashdot, and I would
suggest anyone willing do something similar. The more requests they have
for this, the more likely they are to accept it.
