It seems likely that in the UK we will need to do pre-filtering of the entries as the competition goes on. Is there any way to get the upload wizard to add each image to a custom daily category on Commons, such as [[Category:WLM-UK 2013 09-01]], and so on, throughout the contest?
If not, what would be the quickest way to populate such a daily category manually?
Michael
Run a bot (this is not manually though). I can provide such bot.

Thanks Ilya, I would be interested to get hold of that.

Run a bot that modifies the appropriate Campaign: page every day?
Actually, that is not necessary. Since there are going to be templates added to each upload, a little bit of lua/template magic should be able to add the categories automatically.
Sounds good. Could you or someone provide some help with doing that? It’s beyond my capabilities.

Is this to identify images that need further categorisation, or to identify images that need assessment as part of the competition?

It’s to identify images that have not yet been screened. We are expecting (or at least hoping) to get too many images to give directly to the jury, and will be doing some pre-filtering as the competition goes on, on a daily basis.
If we have a working jury tool, these maintenance categories can be used to upload batches of images for pre-screening. If not, we will have to work directly in Commons.

If you're confident we'll have the volunteer labour to do sorting, then a hidden category along the lines of [[Category:2013 Wiki Loves Monuments articles not yet categorised]] would be useful - remove when categorised, or indeed remove automatically when using catalot. It's what I've done for past bulk uploads.

Yes, we'll be doing that anyway. The request for daily categories is not for sorting but for judging.

A bot will go over the categories in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Monuments_database/Categorization... every night sorting out the images. Just make sure the lists on Wikiedia have Commons category links to Commons so the bot knows where to put the images.

If needed it is possible to subst a template so that a specific time period can have influence on the templates/etc what is put on the file page. Very easy to add.
Contact me directly to get this done.

Hello Michael,
The easiest way is to create a template that is substed on the file page that automatically inserts the category you want.

If I understand correctly, the main objective is to cut it into digestible pieces. Wouldn't this be much easier if you just change the form by hand every time the category hits 2500 (or something)? Then sometimes you might have 2000, sometimes 3500, but it would be the same order of magnitude. I can already predict that the days in the beginning will be much slower than at the end :)

Yes, I understand that but I would much prefer automated breakdowns rather than manual intervention.
