Building up a global Monuments Database with datasets of any country available.
Some information like geodata, location, year of construction, picture, official key, source information might be universal and are needed only once for every monument. Other information like the description of the monument should be kept in different languages.
For any Wikipedia language a template with placeholders is created. A script can fill the templates with information from the Monuments Database.
As the number of monuments is not static and we continously find out better information or take new photos, a web interface allows to change the datasets with new information. A bot can update regularly (once a week) the monument lists in all Wikipedias.

The old idea of wikidata. This is not only necessary for monuments but also for municipalities, biographies (personendaten in de:), etc.
I doubt this is going to be done now for Wiki Loves Monuments, but it is a great idea.

The current approach is that we get some data, add it to some Wikipedia and harvest the information to put it in a database. So we already have our global Monuments Database, it's called Wikipedia :-) I'm not sure if I'm totally at ease with automatically adding datasets to Wikipedia.

Well ... we talk about 1.5 million datasets in Europe alone, maybe more. I'm not totally convinced that these information can be maintained on a more or less current level without automatical support.
Could you please send a concept, how your ideas of generating and maintaining the lists in all Wikiepdia are.

Probably, thinking of a large timespan, the option of doing some kind of "monumentdata", like English Wikipedia's PERSONDATA, would be more useful. And lists could be transwikied easily. But it must be taken into account that not all monuments will ever have an article, and therefore wouldn't appear in the list.
The approach taken in the Catalan Wikipedia has been to get all the data from public websites of the government (in some cases by bot), and then add the coordinates in each case. Of course, it is difficult to update, but most public websites aren't updates regularly (some ever!).

I would say one or maybe a couple of datasets per country.

The lists of monuments tend to be quite static. So you have the initial import, every once in a while a couple of monuments are added and maybe sometimes a monument is removed. The Wikipedia communities are probably quite capable of maintaining these lists. For the initial import of the rijksmonumenten we converted the dataset we got into a long wikitext formatted list. The items in this list we're added to Wikipedia. That approach worked.

Well.. not so stable - at least in some countries. For example Polish Heritage Insititute is constantly changing their list. This is just because quite substantial number of new objects are added every year, and also some of them are removed. This is mainly because during communist era many objects were not considered to have a heritage value (old factories, XIX century houses of noblemans etc.) and actually they are, and some objects are allowed to be destroyed (if they have minor importance and are immposible to be moved) or moved to other places due to current construction works (epecially builiding new highways). So, in 2009 Polish list increased from 61000 to 65000... and around 500 objects were allowed to be destroyed or destroyed illegaly.
Well, that would be an specific case. In this case, I think the best option would be to contact the Polish Heritage Institute and update as they update, and it would be great if they could provide the new data in a raw format. In all the other cases it is kept stable, and I think many institutions don't even remeber they have this information. Anyway, how would you do it to keep it constantly updated?
Joan.

In this case, it is important to have the unique identifiers. What you could do, is add an extra field, "destroyed" or "unrecognized" for the date that it stopped being a monument, and a field "last updated" to help you check when you checked last (of course you don't show these fields unless they are relevant).

I don't see the lists of monuments not static at all.
1) The number of monuments is changing continously. Even there is no exact data I would see the number of monuments added or removed in my country alone at around 1.000 per year. For the US National Register of Historic Places we can see the annual changes in weekly reports http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/nrlist.htm
2) The information we fetch about the monuments (new descriptions, new geodata, new images) is changing continously and fast.
3) All information about administrative units the monuments are in, is also changing continously. Municipalities get merged, streets get renamed.
If we talk about an ideal scenario, that all monument lists are available in all Wikipedias on a more or less current level, the communities could get to edge of their capacity. In an ideal synergetic scenario the local Wikipedias take care for the monuments of their country, take pictures, add geodata and the updated information (at least the basic global information) is updated in all other Wikipedias without causing too much work.
