Hi all,
Related to the other thread about the checklist, I wanted to ask about the following situation:
We have a rather large amount of photos participating in the contest that are in Flickr and I was wondering when is it good to import them into Commons. I was thinking maybe Oct 1st, and filtering by upload time, so to avoid leaving photos behind. How does that affect the overall count etc? How are other organizers dealing with the Flickr import?
Thanks in advance.

We (Romania) are importing the pictures as we speak, since we went for a semi-manual approach that means cleaning up the description and categories. This takes a lot of time (I'm doing at the very most 50 images in 2.5-3h every night) and we wouldn't be able to handle the deadlines any other way.
On the other hand, if you have people with lots of spare time that can do the import after Oct 1st, it is perhaps a better solution.

Us at the Catalan Countries use a Python script I created which basically does everything automatically (JoRobot). We run it, like, one time a day so nothing accumulates at the end of the month (like last year; it was a mess).
It fetches a list of photographs @ the flickr group, filters those already uploaded (this year or last year), checks license & other stuff, checks for a tag named ID= which contains the monument ID and with that it queries the monuments DB.
The file is uploaded with the data fetched via pywikipedia.
I think it's better to upload periodically instead of leaving it for the end of the month. It ends up being a mess. On the other hand, I would also recommend using the approach above; maybe it's too late for this time, but it makes the job easier and more efficient.

Where is this script and how does it differ from the standard flickrripper.py in PWB suite?
I think they're all available at https://fisheye.toolserver.org/browse/erfgoed/erfgoedbot
Mine simply uses the {{ro}} template and searches for the Romanian regexp for code in the tags.

I am already doing uploads. The problem is that it needs human overview. Bad filenames that you need to complete, too tiny descriptions (eg. empty or just the identifier) or too long (such as including long texts copied from other websites).
Another benefit of uploading now is that all tools will take them into account, where as files uploaded in August may (should) need overrides to note that those are bots allowed to upload late images.
