Greetings WLM Members,
Version 1.2.3 of the WLM Android App is on Google Playhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wikipedia.wlmand here http://dumps.wikimedia.org/android/WLM-v1.2.3.apk. We have made some improvements and in particular, there is an important enhancement related to camera photos.
Yes, camera photos. Please let me explain.
The app is a great way to find monuments, but many participants in WLM use cameras to take the photos they will submit to the contest.
It is great to submit mobile photos to the contest as well, but cameras generally offer better quality and control. So why not upload mobile photos as placeholders, to make camera submissions easier?
The following blog post, which will be published tomorrow, explains how this works.
Using the Wiki Loves Monuments App as a travel loghttp://blog.wikimedia.org/?p=17406 Posted by Philip Chang http://blog.wikimedia.org/author/pchang/ on September 10th, 2012
The Wiki Loves Monuments Android Apphttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wikipedia.wlm is a great way to take photos and upload them to Wikimedia Commons during the world’s largest photo contesthttp://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/08/29/kicking-off-wiki-loves-monuments-2012/ throughout September. But what if you are shooting with a camera and don’t see yourself taking too many photos with your mobile phone? You can now use the app as a convenient travel log and make it much easier to organize your photos when processing and uploading them at home.
Here’s how you use the app as a travel log. As you walk around finding monuments nearby to shoot with your camera, use the app on your phone to find the monuments and take a picture of them to upload, either on the road or when you get home. Back on your computer, your uploaded mobile photos will be a convenient record of all the monuments you visited, sitting on Commons under “My uploads.”
As an added bonus, every mobile upload you add to Commons will include a link to the Special Upload Wizard that automatically allows you to upload and categorize more photos of that monument based on its campaign and reference number. This is similar to clicking the “upload photo” button on the monument lists in Wikipedia, but it is right there in your travel log. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Upload_more_photos.png
A screenshot of the new travel log feature associated with WLM app photos uploaded to Commons.
To see your travel log and use this feature, you must login at commons.wikimedia.org http://blog.wikimedia.org/commons.wikimedia.org and click on “My uploads” at the top. Click on the name of any uploaded photo and the file page of that photo will open. Scroll down and below the description you will see the link, “Upload more photos of this monument.”
The travel log can help you in two ways:
1. you will see a sequential list of the monuments you visited, which helps in identifying the monuments taken on your camera 2. you can submit the photos from your camera for each monument directly from the travel log
The latest app, version 1.2.3, has been published in the Google Playhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wikipedia.wlm store and that version has this new feature. Please update the app if you downloaded it before and do not have auto-updates turned on. If you have good ideas about photo uploads in general, or improvements next year, feel free to post feedbackhttp://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_mobile_application/Feedback or send email mobile-feedback-l@lists.wikimedia.org.
You may also download the app herehttp://dumps.wikimedia.org/android/WLM-v1.2.3.apk, or on the F-Droid markethttp://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=wiki%20loves%20monuments&fdid=org.wikipedia.wlm&fdpage=1 .

One request : could the text « upload more photos of this monument » be internationalised ?
I quickly drafted < https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Upload-more-photos-of-this-monum... to that end, if you want.

I added it to wikimedia-messages extension, so it will be possible to update it at translatewiki https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/23599/
I'll update the template when it gets live on Commons. The current version will use the template, but the change to message may happen in next week release.

Just a note that we noticed the translations on Translatewiki, in terms of the upload more string in the app, were taking a while. In fact, only Dutch was done today when we switched to the template.
Since it may be easier for the WLM community to update the template, and the Translatewiki folks are dealing with a lot, perhaps we should see if the template gets enough translations by next week before switching to the Mediawiki message?

There was only one new translation added after Jean Fréreric message. Anyway, Imvoed the four translations (plus a bonus one) to the message when creating it (unmerged so far).
I think TWN is better in the long term, but it could be faster with the template if people is active here. We could manually move some messages from one system to the other before doing a final switch.
It's a pity we can't do {{#ifexist: MediaWiki:msg/xy}}, that would give us the best of both worlds.
Ok, thanks. Let's see what happens.
I believe most of the data issues in various countries have been fixed, so the app should be fairly universal at this point.

Phil, I tested the app update today and the new link for desktop use works great! I was somewhat disappointed it just gives me the WLM identifier, without prefilling the field for description, but when I am behind my computer it is much easier to use copy&paste than with the mobile phone. Shouldn't this feature be included for the regular WLM uploader? If someone has already uploaded through the WLM uploader, then it is much easier to upload from their picture than to scan the wikipedia lists (on some language Wikipedia that is not Commons) for the identifier, no?
Also, as far as the update goes, my earlier issues seem to be fixed. I am now able to choose the "nearby" option and then take a photo and upload that directly. Previous to this update I needed to first take a foto and then I could only use the app to upload from my gallery. I still notice some problems with local positioning with the GPS (the GPS is at times off, both for my position and for the monument positions), but this may just be the way GPS works with my phone. Jane

Hi Jane,
Thanks for this great feedback.
Yes, you are absolutely right, the Upload Wizard on Commons should use the same feature, though it is not quite as applicable. I suppose it depends on whether people upload all photos of a monument at the same time, or not.
As for the description field, that is currently not an available parameter in pre-filling the Upload Wizard. I think the idea is that the description is better for the user to fill out, and users should be encouraged to add a description (granted, the Upload Wizard makes it mandatory). However, in the mobile app we just fill it in and don't expose it to the user to streamline the experience.
Please let us know what kind of phone and which version of Android you are using, as that may give us some insight into the nature of the problem you were having.
Thanks.

Ok, thanks. Let's see what happens.
I believe most of the data issues in various countries have been fixed, so the app should be fairly universal at this point.

Hi Phil, Thanks for the compliment - writing feedback for developers is one result that comes from years of testing new ICT products. I added my initial feedback to the mobile app here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_mobile_application/Feedba...
It may be appropriate to initiate a feedback page on Commons for this, since I don't think many people have userids on MediaWiki, whereas all succesfull uploaders for WLM will definitely have a Commons userid. To answer your question, my telephone is a HTC Desire C.
As far as the description field goes: I noticed the "upload button" in the NRHP lists on the English Wikipedia seems to send a proper description field. I see this as a definite improvement because it reduces one step of the Commons upload process. The fields are still editable, so the user can add to the default description. A case in point is a church in Asheville, NC - here is the link with description field, object id, and coordinates filled, that the NRHP wikipedia page produces: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UploadWizard&camp...
Basically it stuffs the object name into an inline redirect for an English Wikipedia article name and uses that for the description. More info is in the logic of the object row template here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:NRHP_row
The result of using this upload button can be seen here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Basilica_of_St._Lawrence,_Asheville_0... Jane

They will have SUL accounts, but they may not know their Commons login works, it's a "foreign site", etc. so doing it at commons seems appropiate to me.
