Hi André,
I'm sending to the list, as it might be of interest for somebody else.
The definition of a new user was based on the user_registration field from the user table, that is to say, a user is a new user if user.user_registration >= 20110831230000).
Best,
Hmm, so if someone never went to commons (but has been very active on one wiki and has SUL), and has an account automatically created there, will that be a new user or an old user? Unsure what user_registration date is given then :)
Best, Lodewijk

I'm preparing a blog entry for Swedish Wikimedia on some of the statistics for the Swedish contributions.
Anyway, I came across your statistics <

and just wondered which definition you went with in the end for "new
user".
Many thanks, André / Lokal_Profil

Thanks Nuno, that's what I guessed the definition was but I wasn't sure.
Is it possible to find a "first upload" date (ideally on either commons or any other wikimedia wiki)?

Andre, that was my second try, actually (the first one was at rankings.php which wasn't aware of other stuff).
However, going through the "first upload date" would turn things very very much heavy (I'm talking about 500% or more time while hogging the CPUs) and to solve that, very very much complex. I think I did followed that approach initially, it's somewhere in the code, but found that user_registration would do well. I can share the code with you if you have a toolserver account - I don't have time to review it before commiting to p_erfgoed.
Lodewijk, in the scenario you describe, my understanding about user_registration would be incorrect. I'm not sure when user_registration gets filled, but I don't believe it's propagated on SUL user registration, but instead it's probably automatically set on first login (authenticated through SUL). I think Beria shows us that I'm right, though.

New user.
Look at your own SUL (with Lodewijk account http://toolserver.org/~quentinv57/sulinfo/Lodewijk - since the Effeietsanders is too old ;) ) you created the page in meta in 2 February 2009, and in commons one week later ;)
If you want to have fun with registration dates, see my SULhttp://toolserver.org/%7Equentinv57/sulinfo/Beria;) _____ *Béria Lima* Wikimedia Portugal http://wikimedia.pt (351) 963 953 042

New user.
On the other hand, if someone have never been to Commons before WLM, he/she probably qualifies as a new user (barring creating new accounts for just this purpose).
I am more worried about how flickr uploads are counted towards new users.
Cheers Yaroslav
Yaroslav, Flickr uploads are robot-driven, so they didn't turn to be actual Commons users and, as such, they are not counted.
Pardon me, when I say «they are not counted.» I refer to the users, not the Flickr uploads.

Right, this is what I thought. But it would be good anyhow to know how many people participated via flickr because (i) they are still WLM participants (ii) they apparently found even the simplified Uploads Wizard too complicated. Though I understand that it might be difficult to collect these statistics.
Cheers Yaroslav
Well what I noticed was that some of the users that uploaded on flickr last year, this year uploaded throught commons. The users on flickr mainly upload there because their pictures are allready on flickr.Another special thing is that last year 2500 pictures where uploaded with flickr this year only 250 (in the netherlands both). So a dramatic drop. Mvg, Bas

Right. I also noticed most of Flickr uploads were old photos already available on Flickr. Some Flickr users just changed the license to enter the contest and uploaded new photos at Commons.

It should be simple by extracting either from the robot logs or through the robot' Commons' contributions (parsing by Flickr user)...
