Hi everyone,
We just wrapped up an amazing GLAMcamp DC. Not only was the weekend productive and inspiring, but we were able to solidify some solid plans for this year's WLM. Here is a brief yet disorganized summary:
* Kaldari gave a brief explanation to the group about how the tech side works. This was to give us a better idea of what it would entail to have the United States participate, and how he can help. (Thanks Kaldari for volunteering!) * Kippelboy gave a great explanation of how WLM worked (Catalonia/Spain?) in his area and it was really really valuable. He also was great at calming us all down - especially me! * On that note, Benoit, myself, and a few other folks decided to be BOLD! First, I'm working on the Commons page for the WLM US page, more to come with that, I've been traveling and really really busy. That will reflect these updates in an organized way. * We have decided once we can gain access to the WLM.us website (Aude purchased) we are going to translate, copy and paste a WLM site that is similar to others. Benoit is helping me with this, as I am not a tech genius but I want to get it done since we are a bit behind schedule. * We are going to translate WLM US into Spanish, hoping to get more Spanish speaking communities involved. (Spanish speaking communities are the fastest growing in the US) * We have decided to focus specifically on ONLY the National Register of Historic Places. Not only is this easier for us to digest the data (since most of the data for state specific content isn't easily organized on Wikipedia at this point), but it's also less overwhelming for first time participants. Next year we can expand. Besides, over 1 million properties are on NHRP - I think we'll be just fine :) * Templates will be modified so that each state can have it's own - it'll just show the flag and name of that state. I'm not sure how all that works, but, Jarek, Kaldari and Benoit are going to be on top of it. * We will of course reach out to NHRP for a partnership opportunity and we need to get a game plan together for other sponsors. Right now we just need to get a web presence. * We haven't quite solidified a judging process for the US winner, however, we did agree that the public will vote on the winner(s). I'm thinking it'll run something like the Commons Picture of the Day contest with some assistance from volunteers to weed out just plain bad images (blurry, rainy, ideally not helpful for WM projects). Not more details on that at this time. * We figure that since the US is so large, Wikimedians can organize their own Wiki takes and road trip events, mixed with encouraging national participation. All 50 states and US territories will be involved in the NHRP data. * Flickr will be used, we might have some special groups organized, contests, we're not sure yet. I'm a big Flickr person, so, I've offered to lend a big hand with this.
Other details are rather unimportant right now, but we've got the ball rolling. Short term goal right now:
* Get a web presence.
I am seeking help, because I am not savvy with graphic design, to modify the WLM logo to feature "United States" someplace in the logo. Please let me know if you can help (or be bold and do it ;-) ).
This week I have other priorities, but I hope when I'm back in DC I can get the website content started. Benoit and I will be speaking with each other. I also know we want to have a meeting at Wikimania about this. Perhaps after we get the web presence part started, a Skype can be arranged or an IRC talk for those interested in volunteering for the US/Canada events. We also are going to have cross-border events too :)
I hope the US people don't mind me being bold about this, I just want to get the ball rolling, and I know that myself, Kaldari, Benoit and Pharos have agreed that "let's do this and get it started now," is the best policy. Time is ticking!

Great news Sarah! Good work with Ryan, Pharos and Benoit! It is also great to see that you will work in Spanish... *si necesitan traducción, pídanmelo y yo los apoyo en lo que pueda* (If you need translation, just ask and I'll help you in everything I can).
Good luck, guys!

Sounds like great progress already Sarah! Considering the size of the US - do you think it would be helpful to set up a mailinglist for WLM-US ? We could add one on the wikimedia netherlands server, but I presume that once you have your account, and since you have so many technically able people, you might easily do it on your side. (mind you: I dont have any problem with these emails, I think they are inspirational - but it is usually easier to trick people who are interested to a mailing list if it is more specific - for now please keep using this one).
This of course also goes for other countries: if you need a mailing list, let us know! We'd be happy to provide you one.
It seems good progress is being made and lots of motivated people are around. So keep up the good work, and I'm sure it'll be thrilling. Lots of local events sounds about just right.
Best, Lodewijk

- We are going to translate WLM US into Spanish, hoping to get more Spanish speaking communities involved. (Spanish speaking communities are the fastest growing in the US)
Would be nice to port the complete NRHP lists (like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_...) to the Spanish Wikipedia (and maybe other languages too). Any Spanish speakers who like this idea? I can do the technical part, but my Spanish sucks so there I could use some help ;-)
- We have decided to focus specifically on ONLY the National Register of Historic Places. Not only is this easier for us to digest the data (since most of the data for state specific content isn't easily organized on Wikipedia at this point), but it's also less overwhelming for first time participants. Next year we can expand. Besides, over 1 million properties are on NHRP - I think we'll be just fine :)
According to my statistics we have 86144 listings in the database. A listing can be multiple buildings (a historic distric). We have 35779 (41%) with a photo so plenty of buildings left to take a photo of. Full statistics at http://toolserver.org/~erfgoed/api/api.php?action=statistics&stcountry=u... . And of course you can use the api to include a map at your website like at http://www.wikilovesmonuments.nl/monumenten/
- Templates will be modified so that each state can have it's own - it'll just show the flag and name of that state. I'm not sure how all that works, but, Jarek, Kaldari and Benoit are going to be on top of it.
That's just a couple of lines at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_country_log... to add countries. Not sure if adding 50 state flags is a good idea. I'd rather have just the USA flag.
- We will of course reach out to NHRP for a partnership opportunity and we need to get a game plan together for other sponsors. Right now we just need to get a web presence.
National Park Service? Do you already have contacts there? Would be nice to get in touch with them. I know the NRHP project at the English Wikipedia has several questions.

Cool. Would love to see a lot of Wiki Takes events taking place! I created https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Local_e... as a placeholder so we can keep track of them later on.
- Flickr will be used, we might have some special groups organized, contests, we're not sure yet. I'm a big Flickr person, so, I've offered to lend a big hand with this.

I think Lori has a blog going up today via WMF. I know she's also posting things on the North American Cultural Partnerships list.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012_in_the_... looks good :-)
A lot of work still needs to be done, but, the logo is there, which makes me happy. Heather from WMF volunteered to do that!

The reason it's "over a million" actually is because many of the listings encompass numerous buildings (i.e. historic districts), as you said. I'm not savvy enough to deal with anything regarding api's etc. I'm more comfortable with Kaldari and others dealing with that. I'm here to mainly crowd source and take photos :)
That's just a couple of lines at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_country_log... to add countries. Not sure if adding 50 state flags is a good idea. I'd rather have just the USA flag.
The consensus from our meeting was that we'd like to have one for every state. As the United States is very very very "state pride" oriented and I think it'll be an important key in luring participants, too, including Wikiprojects. If this has been done someplace outside of that area (since these would be "State logos," than I guess it will have to be done that way!
National Park Service? Do you already have contacts there? Would be nice to get in touch with them. I know the NRHP project at the English Wikipedia has several questions.
NHRP is a service of NPS. I'll probably reach out directly to NHRP instead of going through NPS as a broader sector. I don't know anyone directly at NHRP, but that doesn't mean my list of over 100+ GLAM professionals doesn't ;) I also know that Daniel Case volunteered to serve as the liaison between WLM and NHRP project on ENWP. This allows me and others to focus on our own specific tasks. I am going to speak with Lori Phillips, to see if she'd be comfortable contacting NHRP with me. I think her title will be a nice factor in that.
Do you really want to change the branding this way?
Yup. This is not really a change in branding, actually. The WLM logo is still there, and everything is the same just an addition of "US" at the bottom. We already put the logo up and Canada did the same. Again, the United States is very "pride" oriented, so if we can have a nice nod to the focus towards the United States, that'd be a nice factor. Also, we're already keeping the name "Wiki Loves Monuments," which completely confuses US people because "monuments = public art and statues," so I have enough to deal with there :)
We hang out in #wikilovesmonuments on Freenode
Yup, but many of our US participants /don't/ hang out on IRC (and trust me, many of them don't intend on doing so anytime soon!). So we'll probably have a Google Hangout or Skype conference, combined with some meetings in person.
Exactly! I'm sure they love to see you do all the hard work ;-) I hope you get a lot of people on board.
Yes, but Sarah can only do so much :( (Especially with two jobs totaling over 40 hours and full time last semester of school!) Thanks for the support!!!

and we need to get a game plan together for other sponsors. Right now we just need to get a web presence.
National Park Service? Do you already have contacts there? Would be nice to get in touch with them. I know the NRHP project at the English Wikipedia has several questions.
Yes, we have NRHP contacts and we should talk to them again soon about WLM! :)
Cheers, Katie
- We haven't quite solidified a judging process for the US winner,
however, we did agree that the public will vote on the winner(s). I'm thinking it'll run something like the Commons Picture of the Day contest with some assistance from volunteers to weed out just plain bad images (blurry, rainy, ideally not helpful for WM projects). Not more details on that at this time.
- We figure that since the US is so large, Wikimedians can organize
their own Wiki takes and road trip events, mixed with encouraging national participation. All 50 states and US territories will be involved in the NHRP data.
Cool. Would love to see a lot of Wiki Takes events taking place! I created https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Local_e... a placeholder so we can keep track of them later on.
- Flickr will be used, we might have some special groups organized,
contests, we're not sure yet. I'm a big Flickr person, so, I've offered to lend a big hand with this.
Other details are rather unimportant right now, but we've got the ball rolling. Short term goal right now:
- Get a web presence.
I am seeking help, because I am not savvy with graphic design, to modify the WLM logo to feature "United States" someplace in the logo. Please let me know if you can help (or be bold and do it ;-) ).
Do you really want to change the branding this way?
This week I have other priorities, but I hope when I'm back in DC I can get the website content started. Benoit and I will be speaking with each other. I also know we want to have a meeting at Wikimania about this. Perhaps after we get the web presence part started, a Skype can be arranged or an IRC talk for those interested in volunteering for the US/Canada events. We also are going to have cross-border events too :)
We hang out in #wikilovesmonuments on Freenode
I hope the US people don't mind me being bold about this, I just want to get the ball rolling, and I know that myself, Kaldari, Benoit and Pharos have agreed that "let's do this and get it started now," is the best policy. Time is ticking!
Exactly! I'm sure they love to see you do all the hard work ;-) I hope you get a lot of people on board.
