Hello,
We at Wikimedia France had some discussions about what we want to ask potential (commercial) sponsors to fund, and what conditions we can accept from them.
I know some discussion about this occured during the last Chapters Meeting in Berlin, but I don't know what was concluded.
As we have to decide soon to have time to send requests to potential sponsors, we would like to have some more advice... What do you think about commercial sponsorship ?
Best regards, Sylvain.
Hi Sylvain,
this is indeed something that is being discussed at various places. The short answer is that it is primarily a local matter. Kul is looking into the opportunities for worldwide local sponsorships, but he indicated there is little chance this is going to be possible.
So yeah, definitely try to find local sponsors. Probably we should set up a place where we can share experiences (good sponsor kits, talking points) and discuss strategies. Lets at least agree not to worry too much about having the same brands in sponsorships - and that whatever we do - no sponsors mentioned on the Wikimedia projects themselves (stating the obvious). As a contest we already have enough momentum to be interesting - last September our contest websites combined received about 7 million hits if I recall correctly (to be confirmed).
Sylvain, if you have any proposal to share, or material (also if it is in French) please do!
Lodewijk

In NL the commercial sponsors we mainly had where sponsoring prices. What we offered them was a logo placed on the website, and the name mentioned on the price page, and for the big prices, to be mentioned in the press releases and if wanted to hand out the price themself on the reward ceremony. That is about how far we went.
But I think it is honest to give sponsors some of the opportunity for publicity via the communication about the event.

Andre
Hi,
In WLM Portugal we had sponsors for prizes, and we had the sonspors logos on all our communication (website, poster, facebook). They were also mentioned in the press-release. But, of course, no Wikipedia articles about them :)

In WLM Panama we are offering the sponsors almost the same as Portugal: their logo on the local website, on the official poster, on facebook and mentions on twitter. In addition, we are planning two events (press conference and award ceremony) and we are offering the sponsors to have their banners on these events and some might have a booth to exhibit their products.
We prepared a sponsor kit (in spanish) that we could share if a page is set up as Lodewijk suggested.

Monica

Hi Sylvain,
I would focus on getting sponsors for prizes. Including them on your website etcetera is common, including them in Wikipedia is something you don't want to do. Asking sponsors for something you can give away usually works better than asking them for money. Having a lot of small sponsors will enable you to have a lot of small prizes. Another way of getting sponsorships is having an organization provide a location (for free) to do the award ceremony.

Hello all!
Probably this was discussed somewhere else, but I cant find where! I’m starting to reach potential sponsors for the canadian event, and I was wondering what is going to happen to the wikilovesmonuments.org? Currently, the URL is redirected to wikilovesmonuments.eu and the top banner says “The Wikipédia photo contest around European monuments”. Is there any plans to use .org worldwide?
Thanks a lot to brief me about this.

Hi Benoit,
the domains should be switched, and the .eu should become a redirect to the .org (and probably some things need changing on the website too, suggestions welcomed). Apologies for the inconvenience, I assume it is simply an unintended delay - and that it will be fixed one of the coming days.
Best, Lodewijk

Experiences at wmch showed that commercial sponsorship are such a low percentage that it is questionable to put any effort at all into it. Our unique selling point in the yearly fundraiser always was that we fully depend on small donating and with it guarantee full independence in mindset and content creation.
If commercial sponsorship is perceived to touch this independence it is toxic and lowers fundraising income much more than the amount received from commerce. But we accepted commercial sponsorship in rare cases, where we were 100% sure that no such effect would happen. As far as I know we do not have any official standpoint to this topic, so its my personal opinion. At the end of the day its decided on a case by case basis.
