It looks pretty clear to me: those people feel crowdsourcing and CCBYSA are a threat to them, without really understanding the implications and limitations of the license.
For those not speaking French, the relevant part says something like:
"Presented as a philanthropic operation, this initiative looks more like a commercial action. Indeed, the participation is conditioned by the acceptance of a CC license allowing the commercial reuse of the pictures.
Private or public entities can therefore use this pictures legally as postcards, posters, books or as illustrations in the press.
The professional photographers living from the copyrights are worried by this initiative [...]"

My personal opinion is that the real meaning is: "some of our members didn't bother to read the rules of the contest and discovered too late that people could reuse their work" or "There are some really good photographers out there who share their work for free so how on earth are we going to charge a lot of money for a bunch of good photos?"

And my personal opinion is that FUD (see [[FUD]]) is still a marketing technique :-)
You could always inform them that they are free to print the WLM photographs as postcards and sell them themselves =)
Jokes aside this will always be the case when business interests clash. I'd also assume Encyclopedia Britannica tells it's professional editors not to improve articles on Wikipedia since it competes with their product.
The only thing I took offence to was that the wording (at least to my now somewhat neglected French) was that the competition only pretended to be philanthropic whilst having crass commercialism as it's true goal. This is something I feel is misrepresented. Would be interesting to hear if they also view Wikipedia as a similar commercial product or if they are just unaware that CC-NC is (almost) never allowed within the wikisphere.

Britannica actually uses my picture obviously taken from Commons
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/435388/Oum-er-Rbia-River
with a proper credit, but they never informed me (not that they should). I believe at the time I uploaded it this was the only free picture of the river. Now I have a nice addition to my publication list.

They strongly oppose WLM since WLM submission is associated with signing the free license, and they believe free licenses violate the rights of the photographer. The actual reason is most probably the fear of competition (in my opinion, completely unjustified).
Cheers Yaroslav
Professional photographers worried about a contest where the main number of contestants are amateur.
Interesting :-)
Good job guys, this is a sign that we are doing well :P

Not with regard to free licenses promotion/discussion, though. Even the italian SIAE (the most hated entity in Italy, probably) has somehow accepted/recognized the CC licenses in their schemes. Looks like a good opportunity for a public debate!

Hello,
Photographers (at last in France, I don't know if it is the same in other countries) are facing a serious profesionnal crisis due to several factors, one of them being the massive usage by the media of "Royalty Free" photographs. As several companies built their royalty free photographs databases through photo contests, the "Union des Photographes Professionnels" (an association of pro photographers) has established a blacklist of photo contests where participants abandon their copyright & royalties to the organizers of the contest.
So, as the CC-By-SA used on Commons allows commercial usage, they referenced WLM in this blacklist.
However, this had very little impact : no mentions in the press, very few on Twitter or other social networks. We prepared an answer for them but it is currently awaiting final rereading before sending.
Sylvain.

Hello,
few precision about UPP :
they first published the letter on their website and sent us the letter (paper) after.
We want to answer that: - Re-explain what is the WLM contest - We will not change the conditions of Commons, the license of WLM is no exception - Re-explain what is the CC-BY-SA - remember that we are very committed to respect the authors photos - Propose to discuss it with them.
But we do not have many illusions about their speech, they obviously do not want to make the effort to accept the way we do.
