Does anybody have a checklist for people to do at the end of the contest (i.e. Sept 30- Oct 1)?
The only things I can think of are 1. Make sure the uploading system (buttons, etc.) no longer work 2. Put a notice on the various webpages 3. Start on the jury/screening process 4. Make sure the banner stops working (Maybe change it to a "Today's the final day for Wiki Loves Monuments" on Sunday? Perhaps even a "Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments" for the day after) - but this is pretty centralized, most of us can't do this.
Anything else we should do?
Just a reminder, I'd like the US submissions to stop at 6:01 a.m. EDT, October 1 (12:01 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time) I think I can remove the buttons from the lists at that time.
Miscellaneous 1. For any exhibitions I'll suggest using QRpedia codes, that link to the relevant article in the preferred language of the smart phone user. For this to be effective, of course, there has to be an article and it should be translated into multiple languages. How many "primary national languages" do we have represented this year? It must be at least 20. Doing this would not only make an exhibition a showcase for WLM, but also for Wikipedia as a whole, especially the smart phone and multiple languages aspects of Wikipedia.
A bit of the work of creating and translating articles can begin - at least unofficially - before the national winners go to the international jury. Just make sure there's an article for every photo you really, really like. After Halloween, I hope there will be an overall list of the national winners somewhere and folks just start creating and translating everything on the list, with a space to note what's already done.
2. From http://toolserver.org/~emijrp/wlm/stats.php I notice that both the US and India have many uploaders, but a lower number of uploads/uploader than most other countries. I'm sure somebody will ask me about this, but I don't have a clue to the answer!

Actually, I think it's better to let the upload working, just making sure that the files are not added to the contest category. I think this has been taken care by Tomasz. This way you won't loose images from people who are a few minutes late (or that want to upload during the year, for that matter).

Most upload campaigns (if not all) use the WLM-is-running template, so they will automatically stop adding {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2012}} at the closing date. Change to the sitenotice and campaign headers (to the thank you message) need manual action. As Strainu points out, we don't want to disable the upload campaigns at all.

It is programmed to stop at 2012-10-01 10:00:59 UTC. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Checklis...

+1 That "you're out of time" signal will boost some late uploaders. We should prepare the phrase and start translating it right now.
The number of uploaders was something that I noticed as well. One of the things I noticed is that the large number of pictures (in for example Poland and Spain) are mainly achieved by a few superactive and enthousiastic users. Thats also in the Netherlands one of the reasons that we don't have the number of pictures of last year and 2010. On the other hand this year we've got the same amount, or even more new uploaders. That is probably also the case in the US and India, there's a high number of new users, and thats what you want to reach, so very positive. I think the most important thing to do or try now is to get (some) of this new users from taking pictures to participating in your heritage project, and then spread out into Wikipedia. Mvg, Bas

My impression, not based on any analysis, is submissions and users increase gradually during September in the first year of participation as people know the contest and its mechanics. For the second year, some users continue taking photos to upload them on next September increasing the number of submission per user.

Hi Peter, thanks for the questions; this is a reply to your original e-mail, so I might have missed some of the things brought up by other people.
1. As far as I see, the "buttons", as you call them -- I guess that you mean those "Upload photo" links visible on the lists on Wikipedia -- are not time-sensitive. To remove them from the lists would require some manual work (e.g. editing the template on every Wikipedia that uses them).
However, I don't think we need to do that at all; we can keep those buttons there, just making sure that pictures will not be uploaded to "our" categories after the end of the competition. Leaving the upload links on the lists could possibly lead people to upload more pictures during the year; I am aware that this might have a negative level on the number of pictures uploaded next year, but this isn't our goal, is it?
2. I am not sure what notice you have in mind; this is probably something that can only be done by the many national teams on their external websites or on the project pages on their respective Wikipedias.
3. I guess people would like to have at least a day or two of rest from Wiki Loves Monuments before starting to work on the results, you know :-))
4. I will be shutting off the campaigns sequentially, country by country, just as I did when enabling them in the first place; the exact schedule is available at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012/Checklist.
There is no need to change the running campaigns that much, as the almost only thing that matters to us is to make sure that the late pictures don't land in our categories, and this is achieved automatically by the {{WLM-is-running}} template.
5. I am afraid that there isn't enough time to translate the phrase into all the languages, especially as there is only two days left. We /might/ create a thank-you banner, but this would also require some manual work from a great number of people, and I am not sure we have enough time.

Hi Tomasz,
just one remark. Keeping the buttons after October 1 in English Wikipedia does not seem to be an option. They are somehow considered as placeholders by many users, and placeholders were outlawed several years ago by an RFC. This time, it was an animated discussion on ANI (or was it AN) in the end of August, and the proposal was to remove the buttons from all the lists. Eventually, it was closed, and the buttons kept for September, but keeping the buttons there permanently is impossible.
Cheers Yaroslav
