Hi All,
The contest if off to a good start but traction for the mobile app is lagging. So far we have 300+ uploads and about 1500 installs of the app.
In some countries, the app will broaden participation, so it is a good idea to let your communities know the app is available. We have created a sample banner here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_mobile_application/Marke...
Which you can modify as desired. The text is editable so it is easy to translate, or feel free to change the text.
The download link is in the banner text and graphics and QR code, so don't worry about that.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We can help with re-formatting.
In addition, we are seeing some mobile/tech press attention in the US, so the app could help your overall PR efforts. For example:
* http://allthingsd.com/20120904/wikipedia-mounts-massive-monthlong-photo-comp... *
Thank you.
Phil
Adding to Phil's note, I think only the International, Israeli and the U.S. sites are currently using a prominent button to encourage downloads of the Android app. If other countries want to do the same, I think it would be excellent. If you don't like the image used on the app with the lightning (I know someone found it too dark), we could do other images or no image at all. For the U.S. site, we substituted an image of the Golden Gate Bridge. http://wikilovesmonuments.us/
Anyway, please discuss any concerns with the design or anything else here and let us know if we can help facilitate more promotion of the app through the national sites.
Couple of other stories in the past few days that mention the app: http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/4/3291159/wiki-loves-monuments-wikipedia-phot... http://venturebeat.com/2012/08/29/wikipedia-launches-worlds-largest-photo-co...

Hi Philip/Mathew,
In case of India, until monuments list as separated as statewise; it will not be useful. User will be unable to browse 4000+ monuments from single list.
Thanks, naveenpf

Hi Naveen This should be solved in the next application update (hopefully later today)
I disagree with your statement that the app will not be useful - it has a 'find nearby monuments;' feature which should help India Wiki Loves Monumenteers to find monuments on their doorstep so there is no need for them to even use the list!

Hi Naveen I notice lots of monuments do not have geo coordinates so I guess this is what you mean - users should still be able to search though if they know what they are looking for! :)
I wonder if there is a way the app could add coordinates to these monuments where they are missing... would be a great way to crowd source some geo data.... Jon

Hi,
Can you add the Philippines to the list of countries in the mobile app? We were able to download it but the Philippines is not included in the list and it would be useless to promote it here if the participants can't use it.

I disagree with your statement that the app will not be useful - it has a 'find nearby monuments;' feature which should help India Wiki Loves Monumenteers to find monuments on their doorstep so there is no need for them to even use the list!

Hi,
'IN-UT' is the ISO 3166-2:IN code for the state. It should indeed be possible to automatically convert those.
The circles are probably more tricky. Before I revamped the tables into the current shape, we needed that to create the unique identifier. Probably it is best to just ignore the circles for the sake of this app - because it will only lead to confusion since some states have them, and some don't. And one of the circles is even names after a city in a different state... Mentioning the district is probably more helpful.

Hi Naveen,
all state protected monuments in India are already on the wiki, it is a matter of running the updates on the toolserver etc before they come in the database. However, none of those have any geo-coordinates. I have added however (manually) a lot of geo coordinates for the delhi monuments, which I found on the local delhi ASI website. So you should be able to use the tool soon in Delhi.

We have a problem with the names displaied in the Italian monument list on the app, so we would prefer to fix that before advertising the app.
Cristian
Cristian what specific problems are you having with Italian monuments? The monuments displayed are just as they are in the database so it should be a case of working out what is wrong with that data and simply fixing that data. Looking it now I can see that the monument regions do not appear to be translating :-( I'd hate for us to miss out on Italian mobile uploads.... can anyone explain what's happening here and get this fixed asap?

Yep, the Italian list was changed yesterday. That bug should be fixed. We inserted the ISO code for the regions and province and the name for each city. We hope that the data now are correct.
Just one question, Maarten, here:

Municipalities are wikilinks.. I hope those are not displayed as wikilinks in the mobile app.

Just one question, Maarten, here:
http://wlm.wikimedia.org/api/api.php?action=adminlevels&format=json&...
Municipalities are wikilinks.. I hope those are not displayed as wikilinks in the mobile app.
I can answer my own question, I have just installed the last update of the app and everything is working perfectly. Shiny!
Just a couple of questions for two minor bugs: * while browsing monuments list in italian it always says "Scegli la regione" instead of "Scegli la regione" then "Scegli la provincia" and finally "Scegli il comune" in other word it always using "regione" as the administrative division name. Is this a translation bug or another type of bug? * The other thing is provinces are indicated with the name of chef-lieu (e.g. "Milano", "Bergamo", "Firenze") and that's perfect but provinces with composite names (e.g. "Provincia di Monza e della Brianza" or "Pronvicia di Forlì-Cesena") are displayed with the full name (i.e. with "provincia di ..." at the beginning). This is fine, but it ruins the alphabetical order, how can I fix that?.
Thanks again,
Cristian

The easiest way would probably be to make the app list them dropping the "Provincia di", ie. "Monza e Brianza", and "Forlì-Cesena"-

Yay! :D
While I encourage everyone to update the WLM app (consider enabling automatic updates), you should see the updated Italian region names without an update (as those are provided to the app via API requests).

This is a by-product of how we're generating translated region names, which I recently described in a previous thread on this list ( http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikilovesmonuments/2012-September/00440...). Because of our approach, translated region names are far from perfect, but as I mentioned in the previous email, we can override the names that we display to the users. Feel free to either fork the code in github and submit some changes, or file a bug and include a mapping of ISO-3166-2 region codes to the translated names, and we can add it.

Thanks Jon. It is working :-)
- I see a state called "IN-UT"
It turns out that the datadump we're using to map ISO-3166-2 codes to region names is missing IN-UT, which is why IN-UT is being displayed instead of a readable name. Yuvi Panda mentioned to me that IN-UT is a relatively new state, which is likely why it is missing from the datadump. I think we should be able to override the missing data in the scripts we're using to provide mappings for ISO codes to names. I'm looking into this now.
Done for the Philippines.

In some countries, the app will broaden participation, so it is a good idea to let your communities know the app is available. We have created a sample banner here:

Which you can modify as desired. The text is editable so it is easy to translate, or feel free to change the text.
The download link is in the banner text and graphics and QR code, so don't worry about that.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We can help with re-formatting.
In addition, we are seeing some mobile/tech press attention in the US, so the app could help your overall PR efforts. For example:

Maarten, thanks for reminding us of the documentation.
There has been a change of direction due to the slow uptake of the app. We are now working on a universal banner for the Wikipedia mobile site, which could be closed by the user. This is experimental and may have to be limited in duration or modified.
It would be helpful to put a download link in the campaign headers. For example:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Upload_campaign_hea...
This is another request, in addition to the banner in the wikilovesmonuments sites.
Please let us know soon.
Thanks.
