Dear friends,
Could anyone help us with automatic dealing with tables? We need:
1. To reform some tables such as this onehttp://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%96%D0%BA_%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BC%27%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BA_%D0%BA%D1%83%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%82%D1%83%D1%80%D0%BD%D0%BE%D1%97_%D1%81%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%B4%D1%89%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B8,_%D1%89%D0%BE_%D0%BD%D0%B5_%D0%BF%D1%96%D0%B4%D0%BB%D1%8F%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%8E%D1%82%D1%8C_%D0%BF%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%B7%D0%B0%D1%86%D1%96%D1%97_%28%D0%90%D0%B2%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%A0%D0%B5%D1%81%D0%BF%D1%83%D0%B1%D0%BB%D1%96%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D0%9A%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BC%29into a wiki-readable form such as herehttp://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D1%96%D0%BA%D1%96%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D1%96%D1%8F:%D0%92%D1%96%D0%BA%D1%96_%D0%BB%D1%8E%D0%B1%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%8C_%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BC%27%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BA%D0%B8/%D0%90%D0%B2%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%A0%D0%B5%D1%81%D0%BF%D1%83%D0%B1%D0%BB%D1%96%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D0%9A%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BC .

Sure. It takes more to download the wikitext of each page into files than actually running the conversion.
Are the -"- to be replaced by the value of the previous row?

do you plan to convert these tables into template based tables? This would make it possible to import them into the monuments database and do fancy things (like harvesting the images on Commons, categorizing them and suggesting unused images for your lists). Starting with a csv file, http://area23.brightbyte.de/csv2template.php converts data into any template table structure. (I was quite sceptical about that last year, but it's great for flexibility and maintaining)
I did a (German language, German templates) screencast about the process, maybe it gives you an idea:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Denkmallisten_Calc2Wikipedia.ogv
(there will be other ways to do this, it is just one way I used for very individual lists in Germany last year)

I could as easily convert them to template-based as to wiki-tables.
Андрій, I'd appreciate if you directly sent me (eg. in a zip) the files with the text to be converted.
Best regards
Hi, Platonides
Thank you for your aid. Send you a RAR file with text files for converting.
I prefer wiki-tables. These lists are only drafts for competitions list and will be combined with some others.
As for CSV thanks for idea, but I must take some time to learn how does it work. Is there any Help page in commons about "harvesting the images on Commons, categorizing them and suggesting unused images for your lists"?

There will be soon - we are working on a better documentation and an infographic that explains it in a more illustrated, not too techy way.
For the moment, we have some information on the database here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/Monument...
Please reconsider the templating thing. I remember my sceptical thoughts about that last year, but it's so much easier to edit a block like
{{NRHP row |pos= |refnum= |type= |article= |name= |address= |city= |county= |date= |image= |lat= |lon= |description= }}
than struggling around with the horrible wikitable syntax ;-) I met quite a couple of newbie-photographers/participants in WLM 2011 who started editing these templates by just adding the filename to the image parameter - imagine that with table syntax?
Advantages: * the lists become machine-readable and this allows all the fancy things erfgoedbod and the database does (more to come soon) * the lists can be designed centrally, additional columns or parameters can be added or reformatted easily (change column order, make text smaller or position data from one column to another...)
There's more about that, but I need to work on the infographic ;-)
Regards, Elke

* things like generating links to other heritage databases or Commons categories is much much easier * you can also have fields that don't show up in the actual Wikipedia article but are stored in a neat way and can be imported into the database

I had been wondering about the codification of the files, as they aren't utf-8. They could have been iso-8859-5, but "ЬГёіх №ючђрјѓтрээџ" didn't "look right". Firefox finally detected them as being windows-1251, which produces seemly readable results.
I prefer wiki-tables. These lists are only drafts for competitions list and will be combined with some others.
Ok. Which name should I use for the template, and which names should the parameters have?
Possibly codification is windows-1251. All these texts were simply copied from goverment sites. Please leave all names of files as they were, or simply add to their names "2".

I was waiting for the names of the template arguments, and then completely forgot about it.
I've at least converted them to wikitable form, so you can work with them. Find them in the attachment.
Thank you very much for your help! It's fantastic how did you managed it!

It is a draft list yet, it is not rather pretty and it is not complete, possibly it will be combined with some others from this region.
And this onehttp://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%B0%D0%BC%27%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%85%D1%96%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%82%D1%83%D1%80%D0%B8_%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%86%D1%96%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE_%D0%B7%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D1%8F_%D0%A2%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BF%D1%96%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%BE%D1%97_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D1%96is possibly prettiest monuments list in a whole Ukrainian Wikipedia, though it is not complete too - it contains only architectural monuments and should be supplemented with historical and possibly archaeological.
So the question is next: are those lists readable for your bot or are we expected to do some special preparations with them?

Ok. Which name should I use for the template, and which names should the parameters have?
I was waiting for the names of the template arguments, and then completely forgot about it.
I've at least converted them to wikitable form, so you can work with them. Find them in the attachment.

I think you will be more confident of this: http://goo.gl/H37O0 (it's a list of monuments in Slutsk, Belarus). The list consists of a number of templates with Unique ID, Monument Name, Address, Geolocation, etc.
Thank you, this is easy for understanding except of "катэгорыя", is it a type of monument?
And once more question - is there any possibility of automatic transformation of list from a wiki-list (as this onehttp://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%B0%D0%BC%27%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%85%D1%96%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%82%D1%83%D1%80%D0%B8_%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%86%D1%96%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE_%D0%B7%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D1%8F_%D0%A2%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%BF%D1%96%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BA%D0%BE%D1%97_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D1%96) into a template form? Possibly I will simply translate a Belorussian templatehttp://be-x-old.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A8%D0%B0%D0%B1%D0%BB%D1%91%D0%BD:%D0%92%D1%96%D0%BA%D1%96_%D0%BB%D1%8E%D0%B1%D1%96%D1%86%D1%8C_%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B2%D1%83%D1%82%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%8C%D1%86%D1%96/%D0%AD%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BC%D1%8D%D0%BD%D1%82_%D1%81%D1%8C%D0%BF%D1%96%D1%81%D1%83into uk-wiki, this way looks most easy.

Yes, «катэгорыя» is just a significance mark (region- (3), national- (2), international-wide (1), or UNESCO World Heritage (0)), so it's just a Belarusian feature (look http://goo.gl/xceXh) - we plan to move these lists to the main namespace somewhere after this year's contest.

You should use and keep any of the parameters/columns you need for Ukrainian lists - for example you have those two different numbers (№ and Номер), the bot is able to have different structures per country.
I would recommend to add a parameter "місто" and geolocation (EW and NS) per entry - you don't need to display it at the moment, but maybe you later want to separate the single cities in separate lists (if many images and coordinates are existent), and then it will be helpful to have it.
Best regards, Elke

The bot expects each monument (each row) to be provided by a template instance. That's why I had asked you about a template and parameter names.
Each row might look like: {{Культурна спадщина |Номер=583 | пам'ятки=Будинок Луцької міської ради | Датування=1939 рік | Розташування=м. Луцьк, вул. В. Винниченка, 15}}
OK, now I understand. Than I have such a question - is it possible to convert the simple wiki-format lists (as we use now) into the template-format lists automatically or semiautomatically?

You could always create a Python script, which regexpes the current wiki-format lists and transforms it into a template, and then add the heading/closing templates. If you have kept the same format everywhere, it'll be much easier.
(If you're not into bots: pywikipedia allows to access/edit Wikipedia from Python.)
