Hi all,
I'm writing this email in my capacity as a WLM-IR organizer.
In Iran's organizing team, bunch of us would like to upload monuments photos as part of WLM and during the competition, but we don't want the photos to be included in the competition (they should not go through the jury process as they're not eligible for being in the top 10 and/or winning awards).
My question is: If you've had experience with this situation in the past, how have you handled it from the technical point of view and during the jury process? Have you used a specific category and then excluded the photos in that category from the jury process, for example? Any hint is appreciated. :)
Thanks, Leila, on behalf of WLM-IR organizing team
Hello,
We exclude such pictures (made by jury members, orgs and their relatives (if disclosed)) and they do not even get to the jury to evaluate.
Usually we just give the usernames we want to exclude to Ilya, who removes the images smaller than 2Mpx and this kind of images at the preliminary stage.
Best regards, antanana Wiki Loves Monuments Ukraine

In France, we extensively use categories like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Out_of_competition_images_from_W... (for jury membres, chapter staffs, relatives, etc.) or https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Obviously_ineligible_submissions... (no problem with the uploader but the photo represent an unidentified monument or an identified but not protected monument).
Cdlt, ~nicolas
Aye, we also use category like that: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Obviously_ineligible_submissions... The pictures there are also not included in the portion that goes to the jury.

Would it be helpful to create one category on an international level with excluded images (because of copyvio, or because the uploader is out-of-competition) so that the jury tools can directly draw upon that? You could put national out-of-competition categories immediately into that.

Lodewijk, from a local organizer's perspective, this can make it easier for Iran, since we don't have to invent things on our own. This can also make communications with other local organizers in the following years easier. The international team can encourage the use of one global category for these purposes. I'm curious what other's think.
I'm adding the Montage and WLX folks for their feedback. From the jury tool's perspective, I see at least two options: * The tools be able to exclude photos by category, the same way they can include photos by category. * Hardcoding one global category that the tools will use by default to exclude photos submitted as part of the contest.

Yeah, a good definition is important here :) We could also make both categories: "Disqualified images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016" and "Not considered images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016" (or if someone knows a better category name, just suggest it). The first should include images that were removed on formal grounds, the second images that were removed from consideration for other reasons.
For the record: both would not be considered as 'part of the competition' for Guinness World Record purposes, if that were to become relevant again. For that, they actually need to compete for the prizes somehow.

In Austria last year we had a https://commons.wikimedia.org/ wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015_in_ Austria_not_for_prejury The photographers themselves decided to put pictures there to relieve the prjury. Of course these photos did not reach the jury too. But that did not mean, that they would not be part of WLM 2015. The category should not be mixed up with disqualified images. I think that is what Lodewijk meant. Best Beppo

Hi Leila,
it probably depends on what you call "excluded from the competition". In my experience, in most cases juries in the first step handle all the submitted pictures and filter out pictures which have zero chance of winning. This also includes pictures which are not eligible. Whether one should then remove the WLM template from the pistures, I think, it is up to the country organizers (and if you decide that the templates should be removed, a dedicated category is the best choice).
Cheers Yaroslav
